US will net World Cup

International sport is the only bastion of sport where you play for the love of your country, not the $$$$$.

that's startlingly Naive.

the endorsements for being Captain of England are significant for example.

the international arena is one area where you build the social iconography needed for big endorsements and sponsorships.

FIFA would also be trying to avoid sponsor conflicts. Imagine the fracas if a number of nations sponsored by Pepsi say on the front of their shirts turned up to the Coca-Cola World Cup. Coke would not be happy.

There are official sponsors for the 2010 World Cup btw

http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/organisation/partners/index.html

and how much do you think Coca-Cola would pay to have their logo plastered all over every team's jersey at SA 2010 & painted on the pitch of every venue?

Each nation would have its own separate sponsorship deal as that would generate more $$$ for them. Pepsi would make sure they pay say a Brazil or Italy more $$$ who they know will push deep into the last few games and who attract larger tv audiences so Coke didn't have exclusivity.

This isn't news, they were never in the hunt.

The most interesting aspect is that they missed the deadline for the government guarantees, but I thought that deadline was last year??
