Just read that Bruce Light passed away yesterday aged 68. Terrible news for someone so young.
A name spoken about in revered terms in my family and a player a bit before his time in the way he played.
216 games and four state games highlight I assume that brilliant win in the ‘77 GF. Legend of the Port Adelaide family. Condolences to his friends and family.

Wow that's a bit of a shock.

Just before Christmas when Dave Boyd passed away I was talking about how many of that 1950's/60's golden generation has passed away this decade. Now the blokes from the 1970's and i watched are getting to that stage.

Vale Bruce.

Really sad news. The General was one of my favourite players in the 1970s. Electrifying pace, terrific skills and a ferocious competitor. Rumour had it he once sorted out Phil Carman in the car park after a match.

There were often stories about Bruce not being well after he finished his football career. Passing away at such a young age appears to confirm the talk.

Bruce Light was an explosive wingman for Port Adelaide between 1967 and 1978, during which time he played a total of 215 senior club games, plus four for the state. He was one of the best players afield in the 1977 Grand Final which saw the Magpies down Glenelg by eight points, 17.11 (113) to 16.9 (105), thereby bringing to an end a premiership drought stretching back to 1965.

Just as well for the Fabulous one.

In my gentleman jack book I have a newspaper clipping from The News and bomber Clifford put together his scariest ever team. When talking about Carman he points out that Phil didn't turn up to a golden gloves showdown in the car park at Norwood oval.

Bruce could go a bit as in he could box not throw haymakers and elbows like Carman.

Vale Bruce Light . He was everything that we loved about Port wrapped up in one player. Set the tone in the 1977 GF from the first bounce. Tough , fast , two sided player who would have made any Port side in any era . The original mad dog , we all loved The Colonel. RIP

Very sad news indeed.

A fast, courageous player that was truly admired by all Port supporters.

I remember (I hope correctly) when I came to Aust in ‘68 Port had Bruce Nyland and Bruce Light on the wings.

So glad he played in the ‘77 win after a few disappointments.

RIP Bruce.

Brucie Light was never your typical wingman. Lightning fast and skillful yes, but this combined with wiry grit and a hard as nails attack on the ball and the man made him unique. Bruce would have been a football success at the highest level in any era.
A Port Adelaide premiership hero.
RIP

Very Sad news this - I loved watching him play, quick as a lighting bolt - he was very much the epitome of a skillful tough Port Adelaide player. Yes, he would have been a star player in any era. I was very glad to be there to see him play in the 77 flag. Condolences to his family and friends, RIP in Bruce Light - Port Adelaide Legend.

Condolences to the family. Like other posters, I’ve only heard of the stories from my old man (whom was a Norwood supporter) whom said he was a star.

Just to add similar to others Colonel Light was definitely a charismatic player . Longish blonde hair but not like a surfeit or anything , his own style . . Pace to burn and a nice little piece of aggro . .
Took him a while to establish himself in the side but once he did he was outstanding with his pace and rugged style and he had a cult following with the faithful , a bit like the way we loved Byron Pickett .
Condolences to his family and thanks for the fantastic entertainment and passion for the club.
No. 26 Brucey Light

What a site to see, was this man screaming down the wing and putting his body on the line for the team!

Another legend departs...R.I.P Bruce Light

Shocked, I am 52 now but Bruce Light as a 10 year old this guy was someone you dreamed about playing like, pace to burn and put the fear of god in to opposition players.
Standing on the outer in the 1970's we were privileged to watch that centreline week after week. Light Ebert Kinnear. Absolute legends.
RIP Bruce Light Port Adelaide GREAT.
