Sad news- a real gentleman and a terrific umpire. His following the superstitions of Nelson will remain vivd in the memory.

RIP, Shep

David Shepherd was one of those umpires who wasn't afraid to take matters into his own hands, like in the 2003 ICC World Cup in South Africa between Australia and Pakistan when Pakistan's Waqar Younis bowled a bean ball direct at the head of Australia's Andrew Symonds who was on strike at the time. Umpire Shepherd stepped in and ruled Younis out of the attack. It was a controversial decision by David Shepherd.

Wasn't controversial at all. If you're gonna dish out two beamers in a row within the space of two overs or so, then you deserve to be taken out

RIP Shep :( Was a fantastic character and always enjoyed having him umpiring games, instead of some of the gnomes nowadays

Handled the situation perfectly in my opinion. He saw that Roy was about to throttle Younis and told him to get back in his crease and he would deal with it and then promptly threw him out of the attack.

Symonds knew that Shep would take care of it properly and retreated back to his crease and was satisfied with the result. Shepherd had a great rapport with the players but knew when to take control firmly of any situation. Hardly ever made a mistake and when he did it was always a touch and go call and you could understand why he made the error.

I think every player that played under him enjoyed the experience and us as fans had one of the best umpires ever in control.

He will be sadly missed by all cricket lovers.

R.I.P. Shep. Legend.

Think he was asked once what was the 111 thing was all about " Lord Nelson", then 222 "Double Nelson" and then 333 "When you play for Gloucstershire its a bloody good score!!"

Laws of the game say if you bowl two waist high full tosses in the same innings (regardless of whether they are deliberate or not) you are thrown out of the attack once the ball becomes dead.

First time will be called and signalled no-ball and the umpire will give the bowler a first and final warning.

Second time he will be removed from the attack.

Exactly what Waqar did that day.

Brilliant Umpire, very good cricketer and great to the game.

Farewell Shep.
