Still coming to terms with this. Just devastated. RIP buddy.

Thought I'd record and post this further collection of tributes shown on 360 laSt night...

this might seem selfish or inconsequential to some but that entire clip there wasn't a single snippet kt, and very little reference to port Adelaide in the slightest. Just disappointing really.

Edit: sorry mods can my post be moved to the media thread

To John McCarthy's family, friends and to the Port Adelaide Football club I pass on my sincere sympathies at this time. This is a terrible tradjedy and a very sad time for all connected to this young man, taken way too soon.

UPDATE: CCTV vision indicates that Port Adelaide player John McCarthy may have fallen after "jumping at a palm tree", according to Eddie McGuire.

Port Adelaide players arrived home today after the tragic death of McCarthy during their end-of-season trip in Las Vegas.

"The indications are that he may have jumped at a palm tree and that he's either missed or grabbed the branch and missed it or has pulled through and landed that way," McGuire said on his Triple M breakfast show this morning.

I haven't been able to bring myself to watch the 360 tribute after hearing about it, but will watch it tonight.

It still feels so surreal.

Well thats pretty bad if true.

The thing that gets me is if he has supposedly jumped off minutes after entering the building, then its taken an hour for someone to notice him on the ground.

All the reports keep saying that there were witnesses so I find it hard to think there was an hour gap. Something seems funny about the time-frames.

I doubt that Eddie has seen the CCTV footage. It's more likely that he is passing on second- or third-hand hearsay. As I said above, it's not helpful.

Edit: It seems that I'm wrong about Eddie speculating. @danielsutton10 (10's US reporter) is reporting the same thing on Twitter. It's still not clear from whom the reports are coming.

Looks like it has legs:

UPDATE: AFL FOOTBALLER John McCarthy jumped off a roof to a palm tree to get down from the three-storey drop in an accidental death in Las Vegas.

Stuart Bailey, a Victoria police officer, confirmed the details this morning.
Mr Bailey spoke to the Clark County coroner's office today who confirmed the details of McCarthy's death, declaring it an accident.
McCarthy had left the Wynn casino about 4.30am Sunday and walked to the Flamingo Hotel and Casino.

He took a lift to the fourth floor and walked through an open exit door where he went on to the roof.

"It seems to be at this point in time the evidence suggests he's jumped off the wall ( on the roof) to a palm tree," he said.

"He may have been disorientated at how far the fall was, he's slipped and he's fallen to the ground."

It's sad that sometimes we appreciate people more after they are gone.

I've only known you for a short time, but your passing has affected me greatly and i'll never forget you mate.

John, i just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for personally signing my photo of you.

You'll now stand proudly on our wall in our home always.

Goodbye and my you rest in peace!

Got around to making this today.

Good work mate, makes a good avatar.

If he did fall of a palm tree after jumping on in it whilst drunk then that is what I was thinking was probably what happened and it's the theory the police over there have come up with. Just thinking about when I've been in the same situation alone and hammered you do stupid things that at the time seem normal, so say you can't find your friends, oh there's a palm tree, never climbed one of them before, I'll do that then go looking.

This report has made the most sense since yesterday morning when the LV police made a statement. Goes into a strange place, climbs a few stairs, makes a wrong turn, ends up on the roof the door slams behind him, probably can't open it, is drunk/and or disoriented, doesn't think straight, doesn't know how to get out of there, sees its a 30 foot jump, sees the palm tree and reckons if he can jump onto that, but doesn't get his leap right and ends up his head and or back first not feet first onto concrete.

A 30 foot jump if he landed on his feet would have probably resulted in 2 broken legs. That's why I don't buy what some idiot on the main board said that it was suicide before we had a slinging match and our posts were removed.

Just read this on the Crows board posted by member A few good men:

I just heard an interview with Peter Rohde on SEN. It will be comforting for John's family and friends that they have effectively ruled out suicide. The CCTV cameras indicate that he was wandering around the Flamingo Hotel and went through an open door that lead to the roof. It sounds like the door locked behind him and he attempted to get off the roof by jumping to a nearby palm tree, slipped and fell to the concrete.

I wouldn't assume that he was over intoxicated or suffering from chemical influences. I have done stupid stuff like this in the past but have escaped without major consequences.

That Wilson article is probably the best article shes ever written.

At least there is closure now about what occured.

Allright I'm gonna sound like a prick here, but firstly what is with this side by side shit and secondly, why did the Bulldogs players cut off their holiday and return home?

The Side by Side stuff is just annoying but on the second point about the Bulldogs, I am truley perplexed. I'm sure hardly any of their players actually knew McCarthy personally so was this done under some misguided sense of doing the right thing or showing Respect? People die every day, life does go on, do people have to put their lives on hold for someone they barely know??

Now before anyone has a go at me, I have been in the situation the Port players are in in now. It is nearly 15 years to the day that my best mate was killed by a hit run driver in London, on his 24th birthday. I was the one who got a knock on the door from the Police to inform me what had happened, I was the one who had to identify the body, I was the one who had to ring his parents half a world away and tell them what had happened. It was a tough time and I was close to it, but I guess my point is that life does go on. The easiest thing for me to do was pack up and come home. I didn't.

The out pouring of grief is generally heart felt and well meaning but I really feel some of it is misplaced.

Yep. I don't even think being drunk (assuming he was) it would have seemed that hard a thing to do. How many times have you done something whilst drunk and the next day or later on you realise that was higher or more dangerous than you thought? I'd probably be the same, Ok I'll just jump onto the palm tree and even if I slip down it, it's not really that high anyway only a couple of stories and off I go, probably 99% of the time he'd make the tree, probably fall out of the tree but be OK with maybe a broken arm or a leg just seems everything went wrong :(

Is there a problem with showing support for his former club where he has alot of great friends?

Its not like its a permanent fixture to our signatures. For what its worth there is Collingwood fans with We are Port Adelaide in their signatures aswell. I Dont see the big deal.
