Reading this just makes me not be able to wait to see the Varcoe jets on tonight!:thumbsu:

the kid is a star. I said those words in February and got told to settle down by more than one poster in here.

Well they wont say "settle down" now....class oozes from this kid, and given more time in the middle, he will become elite. His effective disposal rate is sensational...great pace, devastating tackler and silky skills hand and foot. And he has a good pair of hands which will show more regularly in the next 12 months.

Watch for him in the midfield much more next year. He has the world at his feet.

I think he may even grow out of the shadow of his only possible knock, that he's "not hard at it"
He will never be an in and under like Selwood. And why would you want him there? We want him as the class that puts the ball inside 50.
But there is no way he avoids contact. The body looks so much stronger this year and he has no issue with smashing into a bigger body.

In fact when he bounds to his feet he has a look of someone who enjoyed it.

My wife picked him as her favourite player back in 2007 :thumbsu: We're both really enjoying his form at the moment. Even back then when he wasn't getting much of the ball I loved his pressure in the forward 50. I knew they gave him number 5 for a reason! Can't wait to see him get more experience in the midfield. Also looking forward to seeing how Adam turns out.

He is one of the main reasons i go to the games now. So exciting to watch!
That pickup and goal in the sydney game a fortnight ago is an example of how exciting he can be.

i think most of us are at the stage where we think he is in our best players in a game getting about 15 - 20 possessions
Imagine if he gets to a stage where he averages 30 touches a game with his disposal efficiency. WOW!!
He will be our best player in a few years if he continues going the way he is.

I noticed watching the replay of the Collingwood game that Varcoe had a hand in five of our first six goals that night, and he had a hand in another half a dozen against the Doggies.

I don't care what anyone else says, Varcoe is at least the equivalent of Cyril, but without the fanfare. Interestingly, TV currently leads the league in goal assists per game. Cyril is down in 73rd place, averaging one less goal assist a game.

Varcoe is twice the player Cyril is for one simple reason. He can kick the footy.
To paraphrase Paul Keating: "Cyril Rioli is all tip and no iceberg".

Spot on there witsend. That pass to Stokes in the 3rd quarter of the Collingwood game was awesome, where he kicked it about 55m over the heads of Stokes and his opponent, allowing Stokes to run onto it and mark without breaking stride. Can't say I've seen Cyril do that.

In regards to Rioli, I prefer to say he's all sizzle and no steak. :D

Just noticed too that Varcoe is currently equal 2nd in goal assists, with Eddie Betts. However, Betts has played 5 more games. :thumbsu:

I'll admit it, I was a hater, but since his work in the final v the Doggies a few years ago he has been absolutely sensational. The pickup off his toes and goal against Sydney a few weeks ago was brilliant, but as a few people have said, unlike Cyril he's more than just a highlights reel.

In his early days his offensive pressure was brilliant but he didn't really have much else, but now he's just about the total package.

Rioli's intuitition is usually correct, however his execution lacks merit. If you were eating a nice meal at a restaurant, Rioli is the peas on your plate whereas Varcoe is the steak.

My two favourite players are having great years - Varcoe and J Hunt.

A great article.

I can just see it - in 2 or 3 years Varcoe's name will be alongside Selwood as Geelong's Nos. 1 & 2 midfielders. If Gazza stays, our midfield will be awesome.

Didn't like the comments Bomber said about how he didn't show anything and that he trained better than he played.

I'm excited for some Varcoe action tonight!

I remember how enthusiastic Wells was to pick up Trav with pick 15 after he was rated a top 5 pick during the season.

I remember his first AFL goal in his first game v Carlton (round 2, 2007) - an intercept, baulk and goal.

He is an absolute gun and I always had faith he'd end up this good... I think he's only going to improve. Geniunely believe he'll be a multiple All Australian and in the best 10 players in the league in 3 years time.

I remember reading the comments at the time.
It was more that he had full confidence at training and he was doing things on the track that showed them how good he 'could' be. But didn't yet have the belief to do it in games.

We are starting to see it. He still gives the ball off sometimes when he should just whack on the afterburners and rip the game apart.

A big September and he will be a star. No need for the Rioli knocks, he is a fabulous player as well. Enjoy them both together, please.

good call re. rioli, he looks to me to be a selfish player, and that effort a few weeks ago showed that hes not great when the going gets a bit tough.
But this threads about Trav, I used to see him in the VFL (with more bandages on him than a mummy) when he was younger and think "this guy could be a champ - or a complete dud" I'm glad he chose the champ option!

Rioli is a very good player and was a gun from his first game where as Varcoe has only really come on this season. I think Aaron Davey is a better comparison anyway.

Didn't have a great game tonight, did a couple of good things though. But it continues to baffle me how a man who is so tenacious can get so little of the ball. I need to see him live to see what effort he puts in off-camera.

- Kicked his goal
- setup a couple
- did his coast to coast run
- 7 tackles

I thought he was very good, not in the bests but certainly played his part.
