After watching Saturday nights game, I'm not sure if Varcoe will be able to keep his spot once Wojo and Yabblet are fit and the finals start. He plays well and his forward pressure is great (pity there's no stats on that) but does he get enough of the ball ?? does he do enough to secure his spot ??

I hope he does. Much better option than Prissa imho.

Exceptionally important part of our forward line. Provides immense forward pressure. There is now even perceived pressure felt by opposition backmen now that often results in errant kicks or poor decisions being made.

Will stay in the team.

Obvious change is Ablett for Prismall.

Unfortunately I think Gamble will have to make way for Chapman, but is a great backup if required.

Wojcinski will be the tough one. Provides great run and breaks the lines out of defense. Will depend on whom we play. Against the hawks we will play an extra tall with Franklin and Roughead to contain, however against the bulldogs he will probably come in for Taylor. A horses for courses arrangement.

No

Youve got Ablett and Wojo to come in, Pris and Varcoe make way.

I'd prefer Gamble over Longergan - because of his ariel/marking ability, and he seems quite accurate in front - with good vision too. He's also a little harder at the ball, imo.

I'm pretty sure we'll see Lonners picked for the finals, though...

I thought he was very quiet on Saturday and think he needs to be freed up a little to see if it gives him some confidence at AFL level to start getting the 15-25 possessions a game. By freed up I think the emphasis is on his forward pressure from the coaches and since we have melbourne this week I would like to see him put on the wing and told to find some space and create some run with the ball, get it as often as you can and link wiith run.

This would mean prismall out for ablett and wojo maybe gets a run in the 2's as varcoe would be attempting to do what wojo does for the side this week.

He still needs to get more of the ball. Six disposals & some forwardline pressure still doesn't cut it. With me, anyway.

Completely agree. The guy is also there to kick goals. He won't be doing that if he gets less than 10 possessions a game. He hasn't kicked a goal in 3 matches now. Hasn't bothered the scorers in the last 2. If he doesn't get dropped this week, he's got one more match to do something in my opinion.

Gamble is more important then Varcoe, at this moment anyway. Gamble isn't exactly a sucker when it comes to defensive pressure, and his hardness at the ball is something we tend to miss when Chapman and Stokes are being rotated throuygh the midfield (which happens alot nowdays.) I really can't see Varcoe keeping his spot when we have a full team to pick from.

This whole defensive aspect of Varcoes game is nice but he also needs to have a more direct influence on the game. He needs to kick goals, need to gain more possessions, needs to use his speed more. At the moment he just isnt doing that. In a year or two he will be a good player at the moment just seems to be struggling.

i can not believe the diatribe

he will not be in the ones to prove that he can play when he is not doing enough

he will be back in the two's when we have a full team, and will need to force his way in

west does not play in the seniors just to show he can play, he needs to play better than blake, and force his way in

varcoe will be out, and Woj is a great deal a better player

In the last 3 games Gamble has kicked more goals than Varcoe has had total kicks. Choose between the two of them I'm taking Gamble in my side.

wojak will come straight back into the ones when he is fit, the talk of him playing two's is ridiculous.

varcoe has to lift majorly in the next fortnight if he is going to keep his spot...love his defensive pressure, but on current form thats all he has to offer.

with three important players to come back, the unlucky ones will be varcoe, priss and either lonners/vegas or taylor (based on structure)

but if you want defensive pressure up forward just play hunt or dj there

guy needs to use his skill set, and at the moment varcoe is not impossing himself on the game

thompson should give prissa more of a go than varcoe, as prissa is a better player

also feel that blake should get a rest, given the early workload he covered, ie against melbourne, so he can rechrage for the finals

gamble's forward line pressure > varcoe's

It's so true, Varcoe is a bit of a joke compared to the rest of the team which is harsh but true, he has to learn to play within his limits.
For example not trying to blast off at fullpace as soon as he gets the ball only to lose it two seconds later!

I think that Prismall has to be the first to go, but Varcoe is the second in my opinion. Gamble has done a lot to show he is capable of being a force come finals time, but Travis, as dangerous as he looks at times, he isn't consistent enough, often makes mistakes and never puts in a good 4 quarter effort. I like him for the future, but for now he's not in our best 22.

is it just me, or is varcoe paid to run around in aimless circles inside the 50?

cause that appers to be all he does... just watch him, it's quite funny...

TV's influence on the game is immense! When cats game is flowing, one very important part is the ability to score quickly at key periods of the game. Time after time it comes through the turn-over that is the result of pressure building building building. When that's been happening, its often as not TV was the fuse.
Its not just his tackles, its the desperate fling at the defender in the act of disposing of it, that gives TV's teammate that chance of making it a contest up the ground, rather than an uncontested possession because no-one could be bothered. The contest leadss to pressure around the ball; always with the cats having more options - turnover - counter attack -goal!
Don't underestimate TV's importance to the above process. No-one else gives Geelong that!
Stokes was in his early career, but has developed in other areas now, incl on-ball.
