With different trades going on, it got me to thinking how some clubs can afford players that will demand a reasonably high salary.

It appears with the new veterans rule that clubs are able to pay a fixed amount per veteran – $118,380 in 2014 (presume it is more for 2016?) outside the salary cap.

This certainly favours clubs like Freo, Hawthorn, North and Geelong.
We only have Cloke and Swan on our Veterans list.

This article is old, does anyone have an update?

Pendlebury should be eligible from next year too. If you add the savings thats almost a year of Scharenbergs contract

I'm reasonably sure that Pendles joins them in 2016 and Reid, Brown, Caff and Goldsack the following year. We're getting there.

if the league has a veterans list, North Melbourne has a pensioners list given the age of its list :D

The current CBA (2012-2016) should cover this. I've posted a link to it a few times here somewhere. It's handy to have this on hand so you can (hopefully) find the answers to such queries:-

Edit: That may not have been exactly what you were looking for (I only just looked at the article you provided the link to) but it's still handy to have the rules for such things spelled out pretty clearly.

Three of those Fremantle players are now delisted/retired, they may have a few more to take their place soon enough.

From the AFL Record Season Guide 2015:- Veterans' Allowance

The previous Veterans' List Allowance has been replaced with clubs now granted a salary cap allowance for players with 10 completed years or more with the club. There is no longer an age requirement of 30 years.

The amount of the allowance has been calculated as a fixed percentage of Total Player Payments (TPP) per player based on the average amount of football payments excluded from the TPP for players on the Veterans List for seasons 2007-09, divided by the average number of players with 10 or more years' service at one club during that period.

The fixed percentage has been set at 1.229 per cent and the allowance per player in 2015 is $123,777.

The veterans allowance will cease at the end of the 2016 season.

Article was a bit misleading as the more you have it then goes to a % of total Payer payments.

Isn't that because that is when the current agreement ceases and they start new negotiations?

I've simply copied that straight from the League's "bible", they obviously will be negotiating another agreement, but it does still look rather definite to me.

VETERANS LIST

Was: Clubs were granted a salary cap allowance for players with 10 completed years or more with the club (no longer an age requirement of 30 years) to keep veterans. The amount of the allowance has been calculated as a fixed percentage of TPP per player based on the average amount of football payments excluded from the TPP for players on the veterans list for seasons 2007-09, divided by the average number of players with 10 or more years' service at one club during that period. The fixed percentage has been set at 1.229 per cent and the allowance per player in 2014 is $118,380.

Will be: Current veterans allowance to be retained at $118k per eligible player in 2015 and 2016, with the AFLPA agreeing to abolish it from season 2017.

When: To be introduced in 2017

Why it was changed?
One of the principles agreed to in March was that clubs aspired to move towards a pure draft and salary cap. It was felt that clubs such as Geelong and the Sydney Swans had a significant advantage with more than five veterans on their lists and therefore an extra $500,000 in their salary cap. Several clubs have been unable or unwilling to pay eligible veterans outside the salary cap, accentuating the advantage to clubs with several veterans.

What will it mean?
Opponents have been concerned about the potential negative effect on culture if older players leave the game quickly and there is also an argument that clubs deserve a reward for creating an environment that retains players for 10 years. Other clubs saw the veterans' allowance as one defence against free agency.
However it will reduce inequities between lists. Whether what is lost is worth what is gained remains to be seen.

I think it's important that a veterans allowance is retained although I'd align the years of service with that of free agency, so 8 years. This would allow the veterans allowance to act as a discount/reward for staying loyal to their existing club.
