VFL flags don't count.

Clearly you're missing the point.

In 100 years time the comp will continue to be the AFL, a fully professional league, not an amateur suburban comp, so the flags will have the same value.

It's not complicated.

Good work Nostradamus.

Better hope it doesn't become the IFL in 2090.

Then you'll look like a dumb corpse.

So many sensitive Sallys from the East scared that the semi-precious bit of rag they collected from a suburban coconut shy might be considered less than desirable in today's market.

One AFL flag will bring Fremantle on equal footing with many, and ahead of some, AFL teams. :thumbsu:

i'll wager on one would have envisioned an AFL 100 years ago... who knows what the AFL will be in 100 years... your posts are full of fail.

The difference is about quality, in the VFL some of the best players played, in the AFL they all do.

Now argue all you like about the VFL being better than the SANFL or WA, or Tas, but todays comp is ALL the best
whereas
the VFL had some of the best.

Take the bloke immortalised outside the Lexus Centre, Bobby Rose, he left the VFL at 27 to coach in the bush (Wang)
OR
Lions (Fitzroy) legend Kevin Murray who left the VFL & coached East Perth for two(2) years then came back & won a Brownlow
OR
NSW boy Haydn Bunton Senior who won 3 Brownlows then went to Subi where he won 3 x Sandovers
OR
Polly Farmer who played 400+ senior games, only 100 in the VFL.

Then there is the failure of the VFL to attract aboriginal players, but that is a sad reflection in itself.

Yep, Blues & Pies fans NEED to count VFL flags because they are non events in the AFL.

Doesn't take a Nostradamus type to predict that it's unlikely the AFL will feature clubs outside Australia in 100 years time. Therefore the difference between the value of a premiership between now and then will be more comparable to premierships won in the years the comp has been known as the AFL to the time period when Einstein was publishing the Theory of Relativity.

You can save this post so your great grand children can laugh at it if I'm proven incorrect.:thumbsu:

I don't particularly mind the Victorians claiming their VFL flags, after all they did expand the VFL to incorporate teams from other states. This was the biggest problem in not establishing a truly national league with petitions from the states for inclusion into the newly formed league.

For mine, most people realize and respect that the right to claim flags really matters to people with little success today. You fall back on yesteryears achievements in whatever league that was to make you feel better about today.

That's true. The Bulldogs didn't win their first flag for 29 years, The Hawks for 36 years (but you'd have to follow up your first with another 9 in pretty quick time to match Hawthorn...), and the Saints for 59 years, so I guess that means you guys are still right in the hunt for "not the shittest" honours...

A valid and well thought out argument chardonnay. :thumbsu:

Add to that list Stephen Michael, possibly better than all those listed, who chose not to play in the VFL.

1986- No salary cap
1987- Salary Cap

1986- Not a national comp
1987- National comp

1986- No draft before the season
1987- Draft before the season

Equalisation policies plus the expansion into a true national competition. VFL suburban flags are nice to look at, but compared to AFL flags they are worth very, very little.

The sooner clubs stop bragging about flags won when the game was an amatuer, all Melbourne league, and even trying to compare them to the multi-billion dollar professional, equalised, national competition that we have now, the better.

Quit living in the past. What your club has achieved post 1987 is all that really matters.

You mean the same equalised competition that gave the Lions 3 flags in a row when they recieved an extra million dollars in the salary cap? Some equalised competition that is.......

More changes to the league in the past 30 years than in the previous 84. Hawthorn is already looking at NZ and Essendon has previously invested time and money in South Africa. We already have an AFL International Cup. Are you really that sure of yourself Flogstradamus?

Kiwis couldn't give two shits about the AFL, they will always prefer bum sniffing and the Neanderthal Rapists League (NRL).

South Africa has promise, but it will take many decades until anything significant comes to fruition there.

Time will tell.

You proved one thing. You are unique.

Just like everybody else.

Add to the list Barrie Robran (only legend not to play VFL/AFL)
offered a shit load of money by Carlton to join them (with inflation taken into account he would be earning more than 100% of the current AFL players) and he turned it down

What a interstate flogfest this thread is. VFL was the superior league back before the AFL formed. If you dont like how it is, and how it will stay forever....then GTFO.

its like saying the Liverpool have never won an English premier league because the name of the league was changed but clearly Liverpool have 18 titles pointless thread from people suffering small club syndrome

Vfl flags should and do count, but for me personally I couldn't give two shits who won the flag in 1900, i say let the vics have there 16 flags blah blah blah. They have to have some defensive argument for havin their ass handed to them since the interstate teams entered the comp.

It's absolutely nothing like that, because

1.) There were no interstate rivals to the football league
2.) England is a much smaller country than Australia
3.) There was no equivalent of the 'bush leagues'

Oh, and this is an AFL board

Good point.

Flags per years played is now a much more relevant statistic than overall flag counts.

Anyone want to try and make a list?

Brisbane Lions would be well and truly on top, I think.

VFL absorbed other teams and thus changed it's NAME to AFL. It's roots are still in the VFL. Deal with it.
