VFL Rd 13 - Casey vs Frankston (ABC TV)

A lovely snapped goal from Watts, showed great composure to dance around his opponent prior to kicking the goal as well.

Apparently he's grown 3 cm's since his arrival at the club as well, according to Chris Connolly.

I have now officially seen the worst kick ever performed by anyone who has participated in football :D

In any case, I think Melbourne should be very happy with the fixture, as most of our players have performed very well.

Valenti was injured in the third though, and hasn't come back on, however it didn't look to be overly serious.

Goal to Miller and he's got 4, set up by Newton that time.

Casey 17.23.123
Frankston 3.7.25

98 points after Frankston scored a behind.

Full time.

Clint Bartram BOG.

Newton again pushes a claim for selection.

Miller solid but could have had 7 if he could kick.

Watts very good despite a couple of turnovers.

PJ didn't really notice him except for his terrible attempt at a torp.

PJ dominated ruck 40 something hitouts for game, in saying that frankston are crap.

Bartram excellent today,

Miller did very good team things, shepharding and that tap to Watts was good.

I like Bail but he turns the ball over.

Newton did ok, kicked crap as usual but did good things.
Valenti a workhorse as usual.

Whelan was good in last quater, his class shows in a game like today.

Mckenzie didn't do much but has played well in the previous weeks.

In all a easy win, 8-12-60 to 1 behind in last quater:eek:

Oh and typical Frankston, they are thugs (Newton btw is been given diving lessons by Robbo:D)

You highlight how Newton kicked "crap" yet kicked 4.1 and make no mention of Millers kicking being disgraceful with 4.3.

Newton missed one from 40 out in 1st quater way out on the full, but still the breeze, he had that one lovely kick when they were talking to Bails, then just kicked a goal from 25 straight in front, then two from in the square, one nearly missed!

Miller however kicked well for goal he had 4 set shots and kicked three. lovely goal on the run from 55. He missed two tough snaps.

OK maybe i was wrong with the word "crap" we'll just say par:)

Thought Watts showed goods signs but don't play him in a drubbing next week save him till we play freo, richmond and roos. Bail was also very gd

Kinda felt sorry for Frankston. With no AFL alignment and cash to splash around to get good VFL players, they really looked like a bunch of kids.

Watch out for the kid Mckenzie. Excellent hands in the packs. If he can craft his kick a bit more, he's going to be a beauty.

Watts was solid. Showed everyone his strengths. Clean hands, Pace, skills, decision making, positioning.

Needs a bigger tank and bigger body to truly influence games.

Those two got me most excited.

And another thing...

I am absolutely convinced that we are grooming Watts for an 'outside midfielder' role from what i've seen so far.

I cant remember any instances of him being played as a lead up forward. He's either behind the play across HB or looking for a kick somewhere along a flank. He's shown an ability to get 20+touches at VFL level which is fairly impressive for an 18 year old (especially at his size..). He knows how to find it...

Kids, we have got a 198.5cm midfielder on our hands :D. Yes, he's apparently grown 3 cm's since being drafted. Sorry to those who thought Watts would be the new Riewoldt or Jonathon Brown...

It makes sense though. Speed & agility are the two most important physical requirements for an outside midfielder and Watts has got both in spades. He would test better than the majority of midfield prospects in any draft, so why can't he be a midfielder?? He's got the composure and skill by hand & foot..

Lets face it, he's more use to us in the thick of the action than simply in one third of the ground...

Jack Watts is a midfielder. There ya go...:D

even though newton got 4.1 on the scoreboard he got at least 1 out on the full and totally missed players and goals by falling short or going way over the heads. whelan in the fwd line could be a good idea if he was to come back into the melbourne side, put petterd down back for a few games and see what he does down there and have whelan in the same type of role as petterd by applying pressure, creating turnovers and getting goals. he looked quite comfortable doing that today.
I think Bartram, Whelan, Miller are pushing for selection after todays effort. Newtons goals were easy cheap goals in the last quater so they don't really count and his disposal was terrible. Miller really tried his best and got 3.3? but created some things and did some things up the ground.

Just because he's playing as an outside midfielder at the moment, doesn't mean he can't turn into a key forward. The coaches are just being smart about where he can be most effective at the moment. Anyway, he plays largely as a key forward in his Melbourne games.

I'm seeing a Pavlich clone perhaps - there is really no point IMO to play him in a forward pocket until he gets beefed up.

Reiwoldt started out on the back flank when i watched his early games for St Kilda.

Some of you asked for a report on Lewis Jetta....well he had a decent game with about 15-18 disposals. He didnt kick a goal which i think is a first for this season although he had some fantastic runs through the middle of the ground. There is NO WAY he will still be available in the PSD

In other news Shane Woewodin is a bloody good coach. His team isnt the greatest but his coaching kept them infront for 3 quarters but then injuries and just crap kicking cost him although i reckon he'll be a AFL coach someday.....
