Michael Christian to cite Vlastuin for staging? (that's a comment on Christian being a fool and not Richmond being cheated).

Seriously though, this is beyond careless conduct, but maybe not quite deliberate conduct. The tribunal needs that middle ground that used to be considered 'reckless' IIRC.

As things stand there is a possibility that this only costs Voss a week - careless conduct, medium impact and high contact, which just doesn't seem to fit.

This was the act of an overexuberant but clumsy puppy imho, I get it though if Tigers fans see it differently.

For penalties, the AFL cares about the outcome more than the intent and the broken nose aint a good outcome. Well, when it suits the AFL it matters...

It will probably (and should) be 2 weeks. The players have a duty of care to the opponents, it's not an MMA fight. If you attempt to impose yourself physically, there is an onus to do it cleanly, within the rules or there are repurcussions.

This is a good one for where some level of the outcome should come into play, if Vlaustin has a broken nose and misses weeks, the ~1-2 weeks Voss will probably get wont be enough.

I think the bit at the end where Vlastuin is walking off and shows the trainer what happened pretty much covers it.

Swinging fist to the head...made even worse because of the momentum of the target.

The potential for damage was major, and Voss was lucky to 'only' break his nose.

Under the AFL's methodology, this wont be considered to be very serious, but really, it should get one of the heaviest penalties around.

Will get 1-2 weeks.
Should go to the tribunal and get at least 4.

Has to be at least two weeks, maybe more. You break someone's nose with a swinging hand/fist and there's no defence. Even if it goes to the tribunal (because of the grading), then just plead guilty and accept whatever's coming. Dumb act with a few minutes to go and 8-9 goals up.

Pretty disappointed with 3 weeks. If you've watched Freo games or know what Vossy is like there's 0 intention there to cause harm he's just looking to make a strong tackle. Voss doesn't have much going on upstairs. Thoughts with Vlaustin on the broken nose, poor bugger

I would've thought 2 down to 1 was more appropriate

2 down to 1 for breaking a man's nose?
crazy talk.
3 weeks is well deserved

Completely accidental though. Lobb got off for punching a man's face in a marking contest.

Maybe not 2 down to 1 but definitely in that vicinity. I thought the severe grading was only for concussions and 'hard to break' bones like a jaw. Nose's pop out pretty damn easily (in my own experience - 3 broken noses in footy). Not taking away from the injury, it was unfortunate like I said before, but in all likelihood Vlaustin plays this week

As i said in the OP I thought it was hardly careless. He was definitely swinging the arm and swinging it at head height. Where did he think he was going to connect. Three sounds about right for me.

Hate to disagree with a fellow Docker, but I don't agree it was accidental. His fist was clenched, and he swung his arm towards the guy's face. I don't think there was malice and that's backed up by the fact that none of the Tigers remonstrated with him. It's actually the epitome of 'careless' and unlike the Lobb/Cox incident there's no argument that it was a footy act.

When you swing a fist at a guy, it's not 'completely accidental', but I will grant that he probably didn't intend this result (probably intended to hit the chest?), but for the AFL, that doesn't matter. The result was foreseeable, and therefore, he's gone.

Mansell got 3 for pushing a guy out of a wrestling match into the path of a charging KP forward & defender.

Rightly or wrongly, "duty of care" and "foreseeable harm" are the watchwords of the AFL tribunal these days, and I'd say this incident is far worse on both counts than the Mansell incident (final result is debatable...broken nose v concussion...We'll see if Vlastuin fronts up next week).

As I mentioned earlier, 3 is both more than I expected, and less than I think this deserved.

it was pretty obvious Lobb went for the spoil, Vlastuin had the ball already and Voss came in with swinging arm not saying it was on purpose but that was reckless 3 weeks is fair it's not even a debate, I am surprised Vlastuin isn't concussed given that he has been KO'ed for a similar incident.

It was either intentional or the guy is clumsy to the point where he should actually think about giving the game away.

3 weeks was the absolute minimum here.

To me this penalty seems roughly correct. The way it was arrived at is a bit silly though. It is a high impact rather than severe impact incident. Concussion would make it severe.

When I first watched footy in the 70’s you got 4 weeks for this. They didn’t really consider the outcome. For mine this action is so bad it should have been sent to the Tribunal without grading and let them deal with it without having to follow a matrix to grade it. It should be 3 or 4 weeks, but if concussed more like 6-8.

Hopefully Voss learns from this and it is the last we see of anything like this from him.
