Who is currently a better defender and who will be better by the end of 2009?

Whilst Waite turns 26 next year I would still expect some improvement as it will only be his second year as a full time defender.

If only neutral supporters voted/commented that would be mad.

I think Ryder's capabilities as a lockdown defender often get overlooked because he gets more goals kicked on him through lack of defensive help. Not many key defenders these days are required to play one out with the best opposition key forward, and Ryder has to do that most weeks. I know for me there have been several examples of games where i come out of it thinking "gee ryder looked good tonight, yet he got 5 kicked on him, how does that work?" Mainly because, he looked good because he beat his man in a one on one contest @ least half the time, however when teams have a gun key forward, and realise for the first time in weeks that he is being left one out, they will kick it to him every time. And i don't believe that is a fault of Ryder's, i simply think that is a fault of our game plan, hopefully that will change in the coming years. The best example i remember of this was Jonathan Brown this year. Ryder beat him hands down on several occassions yet Brown could nearly have been the match winner for Brisbane, kicking 5 goals. In the future, i'd like to see Hurley taking the likes of Brown, with Ryder coming back to help out and then using his flare to create rebounds off half back.

Anyway, regarding this poll, i chose about even pretty much for the reasons i've stated above. I think Waite has less goals kicked on him, but more help. So in my opinion, about even, but very happy with Paddy, as i'm sure Carlton are very happy with Waite.

I think Ryder has more potential and has done some really neat things in defense. I chose him because from what I've seen he is very disciplined in defense.

ryder is only young and has more potential than waite plus he can kick and is good in the air

Waite currently better. Ryder will be better by the end of his career. May even be better by the end of nexty year. Waite's job is more of a loose man in defence type however. He only really plays on the athletic Riewoldt, Richardson types and if there isn't really a suitable match up he zones off and cuts of leads etc. Waite's kicking has improved significantly this season.

I'd prefer Waite. Don't rate Ryder as most do; I think he was a wasted pick.
But he could and most would say he will, prove me wrong.

Waite currently, most people forget he played in the hall of fame game but by the end of next year probably neck and neck may be fighting for AA chb with Bock?

Waite's problem is that for his age, he is still plying his craft in the backline. As mentioned above he is terrific at playing a loose man or even when his opponent plays further up the ground like Richo and Riewoldt.

However, left one on one at CHB he can be susceptible to be outmuscled, JB and Riewoldt (2nd game) both destroyed Waite this year. Will be very interesting to see how both Waite and Ryder develop in the next year

Ignoring the poll results, Waite had a far superior year this year.

Ryder had a fairly poor start to the year. Played one excellent game on Mooney early on, and finished the year off in reasonable form, but had a stretch of ordinary games in between.

Waite was beaten by Brown and Riewoldt which is no great blight on his name, and outside of that his form was very good. He runs hard, is creative with the ball, and the odd shank aside his ball use is generally pretty good. Also the versatility to swing forward.

At this stage Waite by a fair margin, and Ryder will need to continue to develop for another couple of years to surpass him.

Got your wires crossed there, Ryder had a brilliant start to '08, his first 6-7 games were fantastic

Did you actually watch any Essendon games other than Us v you and when we got smashed by Geelong? Ryder's first 7-8 games were awesome

Waite is infinitely better at the moment, he was my second preference for AA behind Bock this season. Ryder is nowhere near his standard.

Umm...yes, hence my comment. Might have different interpretations of 'awesome'.

Either way the general consensus seems to be that Ryder did not develop as expected in 08 from 07. IIRC he finished the year off reasonably well, so you might say he improved a little.

I still think he will need two solid years of improvement to reach Waite's level as a footballer. Fortunately he has that time on his side.

BigFooty needs an option that stops supporters from the players teams voting, I mean i voted waite and I could mount an argument for why he is better but I am blinded by my love for the navey blue! Independant supporters opnions are better.

Very true. Waite is an all round player capable of playing anywhere with match turning skills. Ryder is good but not as good Waite yet.
