So,what did he think would be the outcome,of hitting someone in the face with force?

He chose to hit the player in the head, well off the field of play.not a ball in sight, not in the field of play.....

The outcome is now obvious, but at the moment Gaff threw the punch, I’m not sure he intended to break Brayshaw’s jaw and I’m not sure you could say he intended to either.

I’ve watched him play for many years and this is completely out of character, he’s usually very controlled and even when under heat himself is a ball player.

However, the seriousness of the outcome will mean he’s dealt with harshly and rightfully so.

I don't really see any notable ducking or slipping. Brayshaw's head is at about the same height for the entire wind-up and swing. Doesn't lower at the last second. Gaff looking right at him.

I know the umpire isn't looking that way and didn't see it, but I love the play on call going on there. Surely there is a way to trim that down whenever west coast get an umpire ride at home.

On the incident, 6-8 at a guess. will go straight to tribunal obviously.

You can see at the point of impact Brayshaw throws his head backwards. If he stayed still punch would have hit the chest. Could get intent changed based on that

that my friend is absolute rubbish.

When someone throws a punch they rarely have any other intent than to hit the other person. How can they know whether they will break a jaw, concuss the person or cause any other injury? The fact that he broke the guys jaw and loosened several teeth should mean he gets 7-8 weeks minimum.

He did mean to hit him. It’s not like he accidentally threw a punch.

All you’re saying is he didn’t mean to hurt him that bad. He took a swing at a bloke, he clearly meant to hit him somewhere.

So again, you’re saying gaff belted one of his mates?

Belt is not the word I would use but he did mean to strike him in the chest upper body to put them off balance then run off to the contest just like most other players from all clubs do,but his execution was way off.

Did he, in the literal sense, intend to break his jaw? No, because someone with a case of red mist like that won't be thinking of consequences. But he did deliberately smash him, in the face, as hard as he could. http://www.afl.com.au/news/2018-08-05/watch-brownlow-contender-gaff-strikes-docker

Man AFL house will eat him alive after this, they hate any sort of hits off the ball
He should be grateful it only will get that....

Do that in a suburban match he could be up for worse.

Yeh the response from West Coast in general has been pathetic. The amount of supporters in this thread trying to defend or downplay the incident is embarrassing.
Only from a couple on this board.

If you check the Gaff thread on the WC you will see that 99% of us expect he will get 5-7 weeks and are in no way defending his actions today.

no doubt a great player but his act today was that of a dog

breaking a kids jaw is totally unacceptable and a real test for the AFL. Imagine if you did that at work to your customer, a work mate or other.

Some will say the AFL is a "different" place of work, but we must remember his act was an act of his own folly.............it was not part of the game.

6 weeks is the minimum.

This and for the reasons as stated. A real dog act I agree.

Hall got 7 weeks for the knockout punch on Brent Staker, and so Gaff should get no less, remorseful or not.

The replay that shows Gaff with his arm below his waist, swinging it around, Brayshaw changing direction and lowering his body to do so?

It was a stupid decision with piss poor execution but he didn't try to knock him out, he wasn't going for his head.

He'll miss 4-6 weeks accordingly, but don't try pretend he's a "dog" and a "coward" .... it's laughably inaccurate.
It is entirely accurate. Gaff places one hand on Brayshaw's shoulder, at this point he knows exactly what he's aiming at. He then winds back further than you would for a standard jumper punch or tummy tap, and whacks him in the jaw. There is no assessment of this where it's not a complete dog act.

Did the article contain the full transcript of the presser? Cos I only saw one quote.
What is the matter with you? You ask what was wrong with the article. I explained it to you. And now you are questioning the article???

Go ahead and show us anywhere where the coach condemns violence on the football field. Unless he does that he just looks like a coach who wants to minimize the lengthy suspension a star player is about to cop and thereby jeapordie their season.
