It could've been a stray elbow in a tangle, who knows. The point is that no one at the time really knew what happened apart from those two - it was off the ball and even those fans at the game who said they had the best angle of the clash on the opposite wing admitted to not seeing anything - why would you? The play was far away from there at the time.

I like to think that although there are a few dickheads who cheer a player getting clobbered, the vast majority would've been genuinely concerned once they found out what really happened.

This same situation is true for us little people in the real world.

Common assault: hitting someone with superficial injuries.

Aggravated assault: kick or use a weapon (like knuckle dusters).

Causing injury intentionally: kind of obvious. Breaking kneecaps for the vig, etc.

Causing injury recklessly: leaving your car in drive and it rolls back smashing some guy or other negligent act.

Grievous bodily harm: Intentionally causing injury with something more than a single hit. Like setting a trap.


Take this off the football field and it seems likely that Gaff would be looking at aggravated assault (up to 1 year in prison) or maybe causing injury recklessly (up to 15 years), but that second seems extreme for a single punch.

So the most relevant question seems to be is an assault taking place on a sporting field not an assault?

I agree that at the Perth Stadium, the screen only shows split seconds of goals kicked. The footage of Gaffs brain fade would not have been immediately known to most punters.

But, a lot of punters listen to radios, they would have known very quickly. A lot of punters live on their phones, even during the game, they would have known very quickly. Do the radio listeners and phonoholics not talk to the punters next to them ?. It should have spread very quickly.

Me thinks some Eagles fan’s did know, but lacked sportsmanship skills.

Also for those going on about the crowd, they even showed video interviewing dockers fans after the game outside the stadium who hadn't seen the Brayshaw hit and just the Gaff/Johnson one. The stadium said they received footage of a replay too late to show at the game, I think a lot of the stadium weren't aware.

12 weeks no less for Gaff, no one forces you to throw a forceful punch at someones head. Its your own action , suffer your own consequences. Whether you break someones jaw or concuss them. Theres no need for it in the game. Coward punches ruin lives , Gaff is lucky the broken jaw and displaced teeth is the biggest injury Brayshaw copped.

Gaff clearly would get a long suspension but everyone with a functioning brain knows he didn't aim for the head and it was not an intentional blow to the head.

It was an accident which he is accountable for because he chose to throw a punch. An action done almost routinely to get space lots of times in every game.

Calling it a coward punch suggests an intention to punch a defenseless unexpected person in the head.

A simple review of the video shows it wasn't that. Watch how far down Brayshaws head slips in the last few moments.

Again, he's responsible because he went to punch and caused serious injury. But there are some serious numpties on here

I mentioned this in the Eagles forum ... after all the "Gaff is the last person I would expect to do that", I got to wondering who is the first person I would expect to do it. It's a pretty short list. Maybe Shuey? That's about all I can come up with, because our mental strength and discipline has been excellent this year, and is a big reason for the free kick differential being in our favour. We just don't tend to do stupid things.

While I'm posting:
* I didn't see the incident at the ground, and it was pretty much right in front of me. It was a bit away from the play so it's not where most people's eyes were focussed. Nor was it the "talk of the area" afterwards in the area I was sitting. (rfctiger74 is of course welcome to inform me that I am lying about this)

* I could really do without the idiotic characterisations of "all Eagles fans are ..." as a result of yesterday, but that's par for the course I guess for keyboard warriors

* Similarly I could do without people - mostly Eagles fans of course - being dismissive of the seriousness & severity of what Gaff did and/or the resulting damage. I can barely even fathom how one-eyed and clueless you'd have to be to think it achieves anything. But hey, you want everyone to lose any respect they had for your opinion, carry on ...
