His old man has already forgiven gaffy.... Which means more than the opinion of bigfooty peeps who are still baying for blood. So many knotted knickers in here.

From the sounds of it, they are two families who are well entrenched in the AFL community. A couple of ex AFL footballers saying they have known Gaff from a young age. I wonder if they would be so willing to forgive if the player was from outside that circle? Food for thought.

If any good is to come out of this, it will be a red card system that will genuinely reduce the events of these types of disgraces.
Only until a star player gets sent off for something borderline after an opponent stayed down like they were knocked out to sucker the umpire into it, card comes out, player is straight up and bravely plays out the game with zero ill effects, doesn't miss next week either and nobody is suspended.

.. Then the AFL will remove it again.

Has to be actioned by a video reviewer but having seen the score review system afl will stuff that up too

Remember Des Headland? So yeah AFL says you can hit someone based on what they say

When you start thinking along these lines, ask yourself what could have been said that would justify that reaction and result.

Try not to jump too many mental hurdles to attribute the language you choose to Brayshaw so Gaff doesn't look so bad.

Look yourself in the mirror and ask what is really going on.

What Gaff does doesn't reflect on you.

Move on.

The points are valid. If Brayshaw said something about Gaffs family member Gaff is allowed to punch him based on precedent
I would like to think there was no malice (even for a split second) and it was just Gaff trying to get around an opponent he had rapport with, and his forceful contact was misjudged and became a horribly reckless head high hit that caused serious damage, and effectively brought the game into disrepute. That's would I would like to think was running through his mind, although running away from a friend you felled is deeply flawed, the sort of thing to haunt him for many years I would think. I also assume Brayshaw was innocent of any niggle or sledge inviting retribution, more of an unlucky victim.

As a tribunal you have to come down objectively on what the action effectively was and what it did, and as a player you have to hold yourself accountable for what you did. In general society I don't think they would have been in a situation comparable to that of a coward punch, but the player's reckless, clumsy endangerment within the push n shove environment of the game creates the possibility of this eventuating, a big wake-up call for players and their actions. I think that is where the separation of criminal and AFL codes comes into play.

Was never playing both sides. I just don't think players press assault charges because it can get real messy. Did mills press charges against Bugg? What about Cripps on Lewis?
You just said they should be allowed but keep saying they shouldn’t because it’s too messy. That’s both sides

No they didn’t. But they were perfectly entitled to and all players should understand that. A football field should not protect someone from the law in regards to punching people.

Who gives a **** if it gets messy? I’d say requiring surgery and not being able to eat solids is messy enough to warrant a messy response (I’m not even sure what that means. It just seems like you don’t understand that common law isn’t black and white and can account for differences in situation)

So now that your tactic of bringing up melbourne players doing it didn’t work, what’s next?

Were you upset when ali Fahour had police involved? You’ve still yet to explain why top level should be exempt from police involvement?

Wait and see what comes out at tribunal

If you’re hoping for that, you’ll get a bit of a shock. Plus Gaff has already said he doesn’t know why he did it.

Stupid to even suggest. Victim blaming again by the eagles. Some of you have really shown your colours to the footballing world

Criminalising events on the sporting field is a difficult thing because there are so many grey areas. But that does not excuse inaction in clear cut matters like this one. Massively injurious king hits off the ball should not be left to the tribunals of sporting bodies to deal with.

The problem is that moving forward on this would require the victim to make a formal complaint and cooperate with a prosecution.

If the player were to initiate that then I think the football world would descend upon him with an enormous amount of pressure to relent. I don't think any first year player is in a position to withstand that pressure.

There should be but almost certainly won't be a police charge laid.
I agree with this. It’s a shitty cultural situation where assault is okay on field, happens at local level too.

Players would be shamed if they took further action, which is pathetic.

Please have a look at the board rules before you are insulting others if you think you are a superior human

Never said nor thought I was better than anyone.

What Gaff did has nothing to do with ANY of your four points, in fact some of them (such as what Lyon did or did not do outside of a football match) is downright ridiculous.

Moving on.

Have very little time for the ‘he didn’t mean to get him in the head’ line. When you swing that hard at someone a broken jaw and loose teeth is an entirely foreseeable outcome.

I shouldn’t be surprised to see a grub like Carey try to dismiss it as an accident on Talking Footy. Certainly not surprised to see it from some of the usual suspects here. But it’s still disappointing.
Exactly. I just don’t get the people trying that line of argument.

You see plenty of jumper punches and gut punches in the game. They typically have a bit of force behind them but nothing like this. I don’t think I’ve seen a wind up and strike as vicious as that since Hall’s. He threw a punch that was always going to do some damage. He chose to do it, he’ll live with the consequences.

What is your word "fool" for?
This is exactly the problem of this real world.
Insulting others and think it is ok!!

The real question here is: how offended are you?

I have no idea what the hell Gaff was doing/trying to do the young Brayshaw considering they're friends the whole thing makes very little sense

Calls to mind for me a few stories I've heard over the years where brothers have had an incident that went way above and beyond what you'd expect from their relationships. Sometimes we do the dumbest stuff to those whom we're closer.
