If we are serious about a shot at a flag in 2017-2019 before Jacobs, Betts, Tex and Sloane are past their best then we need experienced players in this age bracket. It's proven that premiership teams have a large number of players in this age bracket ( and older) and we have a gap with plenty of guys still under 26 by the time this Walshy described ' window' opens

So who do we target and how ?

I actually disagree with your premise. Look at the "best teams" people are listing for 2017/18/19. Work out the average age of these. Pretty spot on really. Sloane 26-28, talia 25-27, lynch 27-29, brown 24-26, Jacobs 28-30, Henderson 28-30, Hampton 23-25, Hartigan 25-27, Douglas 29-31, Walker 26-28, Jaensch 27-29, Ellis-Yolmen 23-25, B Crouch 23-25, Smith 25-27, Seed 25-27, Otten 27-29, Lever 20-22, Shaw 25-27, Laird 23-25, Jenkins 28-30, Grigg 24-26, M Crouch 22-24, Knight 22-24, Kelly 22-24, Wigg 20-22, Milera 19-21, Cameron 23-25, Beech 26-28.

I think our age profile doesn't really have big gaps.

Will Schofield. Lachie Neale. Lachie Whitfield. Michael Hibberd. Cale Hooker. Marley Williams. Kamdyn Macintosh. They're the only ones I can see leaving their current club.
Btw not all of these guys are OOC. Williams and Macintosh I can see leaving down the track.

Tom Mitchell has to be a consideration and realistically with Sydney's ridiculous depth of quality mids might just be attainable..

Still feel we really need a quality KPD personally but...
I reckon Lever develops into this if he bulks up. We need a Schofield-type if Lever takes the 2nd KPD spot though.

We need 2-3 more , not many ... But enough to top up our weaknesses .... Mainly in midfield , perhaps KPD

Not development players like the ones we traded for this year but seasoned pro's

Otherwise we will always be looking to peak 3 years ahead and keep coming 5th-10th

North Melb is the prime example , no way they come near making a GF this year without what they did to top up

Say we pick up Schofield and Neale... we become a very good side. Likely top 4.

FB: Brown - Talia - Schofield
HB: Laird - Lever - Seedsman
C: Smith - B.Crouch - Hampton
HF: Lynch - Walker - Cameron
FF: Betts - Jenkins - Menzel
R: Jacobs - Sloane - Neale
B: Douglas - M.Crouch - Knight - Milera

Depth: Doedee, Beech, Grigg, Lyons, Wigg, Jaensch, Henderson, Gore, Atkins, Otten, Shaw, CEY, Hartigan, Mcgovern, O'Brien, Kelly

I guess not so much the number of guys in that age bracket but the quality of those guys in that age bracket

I believe we need more quality in that bracket to give ourselves a chance

Will be v disappointed if tex never gets to play in a GF

If we picked up all of Schofield, Mayes and Neale in the one offseason (unlikely, but who knows), here's our 2018 best 18:

B: Brown, Talia, Schofield
HB: Mayes, Lever, Laird
C: Smith, Sloane, Milera
HF: Menzel, Walker, Lynch
F: Betts, Jenkins, Cameron
R: Jacobs, Neale, Brouch

With Douglas, Mrouch, Knight etc. coming of the bench.

Seedsman > Mayes right now

You forgot Dmac.

We need a photo of Lever's old man. See if he's going to fill out enough to take the big boys. But I still have faith in Hartigan, just keeps improving.

A KPD won't take us to a flag. Our defence is actually developing nicely considering the turnover in the last 5 years. I fully expect it to develop into one of the best in the league over the next year or two.

A quality midfield that can not only win the ball but use it clinically and also defend. That's what will win us a flag. Our post PD midfield is the huge question mark at the moment.

To the OP, you'd hope we're throwing a large sink at Lachie Neale as he doesn't seem completely unrealistic and would improve our midfield a lot.

Need to stop suggesting Jake get's on the Darren Jarman diet and just get him to get on the Alan Lever diet. #bigunit

Imagine having someone like that bearing down on you
