We Should Have Won It That Year

Every club has years where they (the supporters at least) believe that they should have won the premiership, yet through choking, injuries, misfortune or some unforseen event they miss out.

For some clubs examples are both recent and obvious, some others not so.

For Carlton I believe we should have done better than one premiership in the 1993-1996 period, with the chokes of '93 and '94 being the most galling.

In what year 'should' your club have won the flag?

1993, 1995 and 2005

The 2 in the nineties because at that point we had a super squad and for some reason be it hunger, injuries or whatever could not seem to put 2 seasons of excellence together in a row.

I have no doubt in those years our squad was the best in the league.

Bit harsh on Sydney in 2005 because they can say the same in 06. But I still think player to player the Eagles list was far better than Sydneys.

The great thing about footy I guess.

2006 - Jolly had to be at his wife's side! And Cousins was on drugs as well. So we should've won it that year.

I am not saying we should have won the GF, but we really did get jibbed in the finals. We smashed Adelaide in the first round of the finals (who finished 5th I might add) and somehow we got the tougher side of the draw for the finals and Adelaide went on to win the premiership.

After this season they changed the final 8 system

if west coast had won by a point we would have been playing them, giving is a far better chance to win and get in to the granny

though it would have likely been against either Sydney or Adelaide

also we would have finished 4th in 2006 if the initial result at siren-gate had stood, meaning we would have played the eagles in the first week of the finals (st Kilda would have finished 3rd with a superior percentage)

Davis' last quarter. Hall's non suspension. Barry's mark. 4 point margin. You wouldn't read about it!

4th at 15-7, smashed 5th placed Carlton then played 6th placed Essendon (who lost their first final) in Melbourne. MCG rule, embarassing. Should've been the NM/WC GF the decade wanted to see!

1999
See 1996, replace Essendon with Carlton. We weren't a genuine contender though.

6th at 12-8, not wonderful. Bizarre season with 1st on 13-1-6 and 12th on 10-10. Not the best team.

1995
5th at 14-8 and lost both finals. Not the best team.

We had the week off while you guys came back from 7 goals down in the prelim, a more experienced team overall, I believe a better team (arguable of course, especially as we played Athorn), and we 'should' have finished on top that year as well (scraped home by a point against a disgraceful Sydney side at home in the final round, when a rudimentary five goal win would have given us the minor premiership).

Only my opinion, but that GF was the most shattering loss I've experienced.

You can't claim a season where there is only 1 team in the top 4 you think you can beat in finals.

2007. Cousins went down in the qualifying final vs Port when the Eagles were leading in the final qtr only to lose by under a goal, then the next week no Cousins, Judd or Kerr and lost in extra time to Collingwood. Should've had a home prelim and made the grand final to play Geelong. Who knows if West Coast won that flag Judd may never have left because the Eagles would've been going for the Lions 3 in a row.

Always thought '94. We started quite well, just fell apart after qtr time. Maybe Blighty did cost us! Eagles were very good, just don't think 80 points was a true reflection of our best then.

2008 goes without saying...but I said it anyway

And also, I wonder what might have been if Mooney hadn't pushed Blake in the back v Saints in the 1st final last year, Lings goal counts and we got the week off. Maybe we would have put up a better showing vs the Pies than we did in the prelim if we'd managed to get through to play them in the granny.
