All this talk about geeting good draft picks etc, here is last years.

1 BRYCE GIBBS to Carlton
2 SCOTT GUMBLETON to Essendon
3 LACHLAN HANSEN to Kangaroos
4 MATTHEW LEUENBERGER to Brisbane
5 TRAVIS BOAK to Port Adelaide
6 MITCHELL THORP to Hawthorn
7 JOEL SELWOOD to Geelong
8 BEN REID to Collingwood
9 DAVID ARMITAGE to St Kilda
10 NATHAN BROWN to Collingwood

Can anyone tell me how many of these would you have at Richmond NOW?

i'd love for all of them to make their way down to punt road. all will be quality players.

WILL or ARE quality players... this is my point.

King, Howat, Hughes,Edwards, MCGuanne, Reiwolt, Polo, Foley (already is) and Thurstfeild.... These will all be stars....

yeh i dont dispute that, our youngsters are going to take this club very far.

all im saying is that for their respective clubs they will be very good players.

Leunburger, Boak, Armitage, Selwood, Hansen and Thorp would be handy to have on our list.

Probably all of them would have played by now, a few of them would have played every game. Why does it matter anyway?

I would have any of them now but the thing you are over looking is last years draft was a once ina blue moon draft. Packed full of talented kids. Read the story in yesterday's HUN where the recruiters talk about how the draft is not very deep below the top group. That is why we need to be as close to the top as possible to ensure we get a quality player as opposed to a good player.

Take the top 10 from the 2003 National Draft and ask youself the same question:
1. Cooney
2. Walker
3. Sylvia
4. Ray
5. McLean
6. Bradley
7. Tenace
8. R.Clarke
9. Trotter
10. Dunn

How many of them would you take. Personally I would take any of the top 5 at this stage as the others have struggled to have a huge impact. It is all relative to the depth in a draft year as to whether a top pick or not is going to matter as much.

from 03 i think i'd take a bloke that was rookie listed by the name of Nathan Foley ;)

This is my point. I reckon draft picks can be hit and miss. sometimes they continue and turn into guns, other times they die in the arse.

I would like to look at some recycled players and trades... We have too many youngersters already... here is a few trades that went over the past 3 years..... B Caracella, T Simmonds, Mal Michael, Polak, Solomon, Everit, Camporale, Akamanis,

We should be looking for off contracted players 25 - 28 years old.

No way we should bring in anyone older than 26 because by the time we're going to be any good they will be gone.

Drafting is getting more and more professional, there are far fewer misses than there were 10 years ago and that trend will continue.

You may have missed it but that is what previous coaches have done gone for the quick fix and we ended up going nowhere. Wallace has not traded any of our early picks away we downgraded last year but we still kept our first round. Doubt we would be doing the same thing again this year.

I would not want to see the club trade any of their first 2 rounds which the way it looks will give us 3 picks. If anything we should be looking to trade into the early rounds of the draft and really stock up on more kids. There is a suggestion in the Krak thread about trading out Krak and our third round for Ports second round and if we could do that then I would take it.

At lleast 4 of the players you mentioned are over 30 years old that were traded in the last few years we don't need old players looking to sure up their retirement fund. If we are looking at a player in the PSD/Trade period they would want to be at least capable of playing for 7-10 years not 5-7 like the ages you suggest. This is where players like Meeson, De Luca, Grayham are viable options because they fit that criteria. The players you are suggesting we look at are the types you look at when you are trying to push for a flag, Richmond are a fair way off of pushing for a flag.

Not on the turps yet IDGAF, will be soon when i watch Souths vs Melb Storm

You can not have 22 Foleys......

How about this for a side....

B. Raines, Bowden (c), King
HB. Newman, Polak, Solomon
C: Akermanis, Tuck, Coughlan
HF: Petts, Richo, Delidio
F: Brown, Fevola, Tambling
Foll: Simmonds, Foley, Howat

INT: Thurstfiled, Jackson, Polo, Pattison

Can anybody tell me what is wrong with this side??

Backline : Pace, skill and experience
Centre: Probably the toughest in the comp.
Forward line: Oh, it would be raining goals.
Ruck: Looks fine to me.

My point is this squad has the right balance of youth and leadership. Too many young kids woulkd see us die a slow death. MInd you, i added only 3 players.. only 3...

yeh of course not all top draft picks are going to be stars but who doesnt want to get the best potential talent on offer.

Part of the problem is that the Richmond faithful have unrealistic expectations from the draft. We expect super-stars who win Brownlows and walk straight into the league.

Clubs draft with a view to what a player will be like when he has had 5-6 years and 80-100 games under his belt. It is those years 23-29 when he will help you win.

Joes selwood is the only one to already make a real stamp on the game...errr what posi does he play:rolleyes:

OK, how about i put it to you this way.... here are the top ten picks and the top ten recycled players from last year. Which list would you take the most players from?

Trades/de-lists (recycled players)

Jason Akermanis
Chris Tarrant
Paul Medhurst
Dean Solomon
Graham Polak
Peter Everitt.
David Rodan
Michael Gardiner
Cameron Cloke
Jason Cloke

I feel we all stress too much on draft picks.. I remember Freo Boards laughing at us for taking Polak... I remember our board saying farewell with a big grin to Rodan, and nobody wanted the Clokes.... A new team and new coach and a new environment can turn a player around....

It is completely unrealistic to expect a draftee to make an immediate impact in the AFL.

You would be livid if the guy you traded for didn't step straight into the team.

The key thing is about putting a winning team together. Everitt and Akermanis might have combined to deliver 5-6 extra wins for us. Left us in 12th. That acheives nothing.

Everitt is good value for Sydney as they try to milk one more premiership out of their team. Akermanis is good value for the Dogs as they try and get themselves from a 5th-8th team into a top-4 team. Veterans like that are useless to us.

We need to build a team from the ground up and try to cherry-pick the occasional <24 year old (like Polak) when the deal is right.

So you wouldn't have taken any of the other players??

Considering we finished 9th in 2006 and we were a genuine chance to make the 8 in 2007, wouldn't you have gone for an experienced player?
