Outplayed us completely (bar a few days in Perth). Thouroughly deserved retention of the Ashes, prepared very well (especially compared to a one day series against Sri Lanka, great idea that one) and bowled very very well. Well played a bring on 2013

Or 2009 where we should've but couldnt knock Panesar over.

I thought the poms played out of their skins in 2005, but McGrath stepping on a cricket ball was a huge difference.

2009 Ashes Australia dominated runs and wickets but couldn't deliver in the key moments, starting with Anderson and Panesar in the first test.

In this Ashes we just have not been close in the defeats. Comprehensive, credit to England. Hard to believe we were an hour away from drawing Adelaide and could still draw the series.

We were outplayed, out-thought, out-coached, out-captained & out-classed, and hopefully this result will cause some navel gazing at Cricket Australia.

Hopefully, we will see a clean out of the selectors, the coach (Greg Shipperd or Steve Rixon and Jason Gillespie as bowling coach), a new captain (Brad Haddin should take over temporarily, with Cameron White as a deputy, because Clarke needs to get in form first), and some new players into the team, with an eye for the future (Ferguson, Khawaja, Pattinson, Paine, Hazelwood, etc.)

We need to pick a side for the Sydney Test in a view for India next summer, and although this side may lack bowlers, but we need to stick with a line-up and give Hughes, Khawaja, Ferguson a chance to prove themselves.

Pretty ruthless performance by Eng overall, they are clearly so much more disciplined and better drilled in their, a minor hiccup in Perth but it took a very special individual effort by Hussey, Johnson and Harris and to win the match for the Aussies there, nobody else deserved any credit for that win (apart from Maybe Watson with his 90 odd in the 2nd dig)

Heartiest congrats to England for a well deserved victory in the series and retaining the little urn. I know some of you have been waiting a long time to see England hold the urn when they came back from Australia- and now you can- enjoy it!

This is probably the best-prepared England team seen in this country for quite some time. The planning for the tour was two years in the making-it didn't happen overnight. If you speak to anyone from the England camp, they'll tell you they started to plan for the 2010-11 Ashes battle straight after the conclusion of the 2009 Ashes series. And it has paid off big time.

They certainly have been well prepared but bottom line is they have a better group of players than the Aussies right now.

Good thread - full credit to them in every aspect. Thier preperation was superb and they planned it to have not only a group of in-form players, but depth as well. Every player contributed, they didn't rely on 2-3 players to save them. Even Collingwood's batting form was offset by some of his fielding.

Australia need to learn from them big time and invest in the right players - not picking duds who will never make it no matter how much time you give them.

Alot comes down to the way they've prepared tho. Talentwise I dont think there's all that much between the two camps, but when their bowling unit in particular all sticks to a plan and bowls accurately and consistently, compared to our side who's (probably) most dangerous bowler varies between unplayable and, well, unplayable they always had that edge.

It's alot to do with how well they've prepared and planned for this tour, especially when compared the piss-poor preperation we've had. I dont know how much a good prep would've helped, because we still couldnt have gone in with a 31 year old Ricky Ponting, but it would've been better than the mess we dished up.

And when you consider the depth of young talent coming up through the ranks in English county cricket and compare that to where Australia are now, I really can't see Australia winning back the Ashes for quite some time. Which is why a complete overhaul of Australian cricket in every aspect-International (Test/ODI/Twenty20), Sheffield Shield, Club-is needed urgently.

I don't know about not much difference talentwise. Their bowlers consistently bowl accurately as a unit (Finny not so much but he's young). That must be a talent in itself. Sure as hell, our guys can't do it.

Clearly the better side in nearly every facet.

Better preparation, more controlled bowling, more discplined batting.

England are on track for a 3-1 result which would be a just scoreline given how much they have outplayed Australia.

Unless the Australian middle order led by its flimsy stand in captain can show some grit those wins will be massive innings plus victories which further underlines the gulf between the two sides.

Yeah we have been outplayed.

But i have no doubt if Australia had won the toss in Melb we would be 2-1 up with all the pressure on England in this test.
Same as the 2009 series when the Poms have had EVERYTHING go their way

... we still would have had our bowlers bowling. So no, it wouldn't have 2-1 our way.
