Tbf they did it to themselves.

But club is in a horrible position.

Everyone does it to themselves.

We are about to gain 3 first rounders, including 2 in the top 3 (and given out picks/points situation, a chance at least for another top 10). After offloading probably 8 players (2 traded, 2 retired and 4 delisted) whose average age is 27.5. All of our young players have, or appear to be about to sign extensions. Basically a complete list turnover.

Will we suck for another couple of years? Yeah probably. Which will also bring in more high picks.

Horrible position is finishing between 6th and 10th each year whilst being in the window for age. Just ask Essendon and Carlton.

Not going to act like watching us hasn't been painful. But at the end of it we are set up for genuinely competing, not a ceiling of getting rolled out of finals first or second week. Whether or not we take the opportunity is another thing.

And I'm pretty sure if you didn't select Bo you still wouldn't have picked Reid.

You guys appear to have a talent identification problem: agree or not?
Shanahan puts that to bed.

Allan has had an injury interrupted season, maybe take longer than a year.

Eagles drafting has been pretty good since about 2021, with only a couple of genuine misses with decent picks, 23- Barnett, 29 - Burgiel.

Mix of poor drafting and poor trading.

You’ve had first round pick supply, it’s obviously tough being an interstate team compared to Victorian sides, but the controllables have still been poor.

I think this is the reset needed because, I still don’t rate some of your talent as highly as you guys obviously do, same for North fans.

Trading Barrass (experience important in guiding youth) for Hawthorns picks not Carlton’s was a poor decision.

Doesn’t help having your leaders being Duggan and Kelly, the latter who said himself he doesn’t care anymore. Plus two guys traded in (Graham & Baker), then Allen who wants to leave.

Sending your first rounder last year for Owies and a trade back, plus helping to get Baker was still a ****ing atrocious trade.

Feel free to show us any club that haven't made bad list calls. Seems to be a theme, "Eagles made some poor calls".
well yeah, every team has made bad calls, but at least every other club has made some good calls as well.

edit: except Carlton

And trading for Barrass may be a poor decision by Hawthorn, as may trading out of last year's draft and most of this year's.

At this stage Bo has played more than Smith (obviously it sucks what happened to Smith), and Baker probably wins our B&F. So long way to go still on that one too.

And some core decisions associated with those above:
  • keeping a tired recruitment structure in place despite the obvious list decline and impending rebuild. The Pieman underperforming ain't a new thing.
  • extending older and injured players beyond credible use by dates. Clearly investing in another premiership push but miscalculating badly.
  • Simpson's contract should be bundled in here somewhere. The club has no vision of the cliff it was about to drive over. And Simpson was clearly not interested in a rebuild.
  • completely stuffing up the B sides WAFL alliance and now stuck with trying to develop players in a non productive environment

Hawthorn ended up getting Carlton’s picks anyway for this year which ended up being better?

For the short term Barrass is 100% the right choice, and long-term there are options.

In regards to you trading down last year and Owies being a big reason for that, is a diabolical trade.

Owies was chump change.

Who should we have taken with pick 63 instead?

Owies is not a big reason for the trade, I mean C'mon. 3 for 12 and 14 in a deep first round is market value. I am still annoyed how that trade went down, because we could have waited until the final hour to see if someone gave a sweetener for 14 and another pick which would have been enough for Bakes. But also, without the pick swap, there isn't really a path to keep the pick we used on Shanahan. So I still see the trade as being a good one.

Why is TB 100% the right choice? He may turn out to be, but you are about to play an away elimination final and haven't debuted a single player all year. You are in it for the here and now, nothing wrong with that. But you gave up a lot.

Carlton's pick will end up being around 13 I think after bids/FA in what is said to be (famous last words) a top heavy draft. Your pick last year ended up being Murphy Reid didn't it (stand to be corrected but looks like it according to Wikipedia)? May still work out OK but will need a lift it appears.

Bolded is what I mean.

He has been good this year, Hawthorn defense has been strong and he’s an integral part of that. Hawthorn really didn’t give up a lot either.

Hawthorn traded 14 to Carlton for their future first and second which will be a massive return. Then Hawthorn gave the Eagles (future first, second and third for a fourth in return). So basically a first and second, which Hawthorn got back and upgraded anyway..

He is a top quality key defender, he’s played 99% of the games, it was a need to sure up defense and it’s worked. Hawthorn have options with a lot of key defensive stocks.

The draft is pretty good from what I’ve seen, and it’ll be interesting to see what hawthorn do in terms of trades and free agency.

Hawthorn traded 14 for 8 & 26.

Hawthorn get Barrass and the first pick in R4 (55)

Eagles got pick 12, 30 & 48 (currently can change with finals)

Anyway, as I was saying tho too, there’ll be a definite problem with Allen leaving despite the draft pick, there is a SEVERE lack of depth, leadership and proven commodities.

You realise it is not as simple as that always tho, you could do that, or you could’ve traded out a pick from this year, or combined picks.

Giving away Pick 3 which could’ve been:

Smith, Draper? Langford?
Right, so what do you think would have gotten it done? I doubt it gets done for a f2 or the like.

Yea nice long bow to suggest you wanted to hold your second rounder because you thought shanahan would slide that far…
Not my suggestion, I’m saying with the benefit of hindsight the trades worked out quite well. At the time I wasn’t happy with it.

And instead we end up with Allan + Gross + whatever the trade for Baker would have been (likely Shanahan or Hawks 1st this year).

Not too bad with the benefit of hindsight.

Gotta love freo supporters, you scrape into the finals and immediately start spouting off how amazing you are.
How is Quinton Narkle, Ollie Murphy, Charlie Nicholls, Emmet, Davies or Jaren Carr going ?
Talent identification problem? You have drafted Reid and Amiss in the last 5 yrs and not at lot more, Hardly draft guru's

Can’t give Amiss a tick, the bloke drafted at 57 has similar stats. Pretty rough for a pick 8.

Read what I said above, and then you can always trade back in using futures and later picks.

Better than giving up a guaranteed pick 3.

Yeah hindsight helps, but still could’ve been better. I still judge the trade off the time, it was poor.

But draft pick trading is always a wait and see anyway. Seeing how players develop.

Out of interest, why didn’t the Wagles attempt to get Curtin?
