Think we will be better, significantly better than last year. For a few simple reasons.

Sheezel will go up another level again and enter the absolute elite imo. He took the piss yesterday and will do that most weeks.

Powell finally has a a top midfielders body and tank. I think he challenges Sheezel for our B&F.

We have an AA caliber ruck and then LDU, McKercher, Wardlaw, Phillips (finally looks super fit) and FOS has looked great.

I think this is the year we finally start simply overpowering most sides through the middle of the ground.

I like a few West Coast have got in the back end of the draft. Barrass was no loss as they had an auto replacement, good list management there. They looked better through the middle against Richmond with Hewett in there. Was a weird game yesterday with the gale force winds and I’m not sure we really played to it, but rather kept typical structures for Marvel in Rnd 1. I.E we didn’t play a +1 like WC behind against the wind etc.

Was more looking at our ball movement and setups rather than scoreboard. There were some positives. FOS looks unreal tbh.

It’s (mostly) a fantastic young group, but I’m not sure Xerri, LDU, Sheezel, Powell, McKercher, Wardlaw, Phillips and O’Sullivan are overpowering many sides at AFL level in 2025, let alone “most sides”.

Well, as I said, it's my prediction.

Sheezel will be one of the best players in the league this year and sides are offering LDU - $1.4m a season to move across to their midfield?

Most sides only have 4 midfielders that attend over 10 center bounces a game and 2 of those 4 are those 2. Then there's the ruckman and the fact the other 2 are likely to be a combination of Powell, Luke Parker, George Wardlaw and Simpkin.

I think there's enough miles in the likes of Powell and Phillips they are about to make a step up.

Powell was rated behind only Daicos, Sheezel, Holmes, Gulden, JHF and Wardlaw for u22 mids in the league last year. I don't think it's a massive prediction to say he might make a big difference if he can continue to develop as a 3rd midfielder with LDU and Sheezel

In reality, most midfields are carried by 2-3 players with some good support players. Carltons a prime example.

defence is putrid. will be getting 100 kicked on you multiple times this season.

should improve but 5-6 wins is where it tops off at

the Roo's ..
but only slightly, like a position or two on the ladder.
both teams will be swimming in the bottom 5 teams on the ladder.

West coast are a decent side with a home ground advantage.

They have a terrific one two punch up forward in Allen and Waterman, both just entering their prime.

That said the midfield requires a hell of a lot of heavy lifting from Kelly turning 31 and Yeo turning 32. And even moreso, their defence is based around an absolute gun in McGovern who is turning 33.

Kelly and Yeo aren't the future.

They are support players for the kids.

Harley, Hewett, Ginbey, Bo Allen, Hall, Dewar, Hutchingson, Long, Gross are the future supported by Graham, Baker, Kelly and Yeo.

Add a Chad Warner next off season and another decent kid and off they go.

That Kelly ain’t the future is kind of my point.

In the weekend he was the only eagle to get over 20 possessions, he had 8 tackles, 8 clearances a goal.

There’s little evidence that all those young guys you mentioned will do anything as mids for the eagles in the future.

Just my opinion

Little evidence all will do anything? Well when you say ALL then that obviously doesn't happen at any club. Same could be said about any young group. They all wont make it.......some will.

Well many have shown great promise and pedigree. Time will tell. That's what happens in a rebuild.

Reid was the only one of those guys obeanie listed who played in the middle for more than a quarter, and he was tagged.

We played a gamestyle that is really only conducive to a couple of players getting 20+ touches anyway

I know it's only a pre-season game, but North completely pantsed us, yet somehow managed to lose the game. We were missing Yeo, Hewitt and Oscar Allan... so a fairly full lineup.

I think the new gameplan will snag us a few unexpected wins... but for the most part, I think we are in for some serious pain again. North on the other hand, need to learn how to turn talent into results. At least they've got a coach with a track record in that regards.

Did they pants us though?
They chipped the ball around a lot but thats about all they did, along with having a fast start

Difficult to draw conclusions around possession counts when the teams are playing such different styles... but they beat us on in inside-50s, and had more scoring shots. They also held the lead for most of the game. Ok, maybe it wasn't a pantsing... but I definitely feel like we got lucky with the number of shots they missed.

You are always in the game against North because their backline is so poor.

Things change quickly when a young group hits 50 plus games and have some mature support.

North just added Darling, Daniels and Parker alongside Fisher. Also getting Logue back helps with experience.

Hawthorn took a massive step forward in 2024 no-one saw coming. Now many fair weather commentators are tipping them for a flag. IMO they dont yet have the midefield class to do it. North do but they need time to develop.
