Wow, I completely forgot about the 2012 Qualifying Final, and can't recall a thing about it.

Seems I'd already resigned myself to the fact we weren't contending for the flag that year...
Cloke made a mess of Schoenmakers but we never looked like losing

A bit of a forgotten game. Maybe because Hawthorn didn't go on to win the flag like everybody had anticipated.

From memory, it was a low scoring arm wrestle for most of the first quarter, then the floodgates opened and Hawthorn won relatively comfortably in a high scoring game?

To be honest, this whole thread is bizarre to me. Hawthorn and Collingwood are in totally different demographics for their team and their goals. Pies are in win now, have the list for it and are recent premiers who had a dip in form in their b2b year. Hawks are a really young team embracing a new culture and are adding side pieces to bolster. They should aim to make finals again but top 4 is certainly not a realistic goal.
I'll alert the club. I'm sure they will want to thank you.

Two mid table sides last year with very different age profiles, with the younger side expected to rise in 2025 while the older side is expected to decline. Too old too slow, and all that.

Both should be top 8 contenders again in 2025 but who will be better?
Hawks will be 7-10, Pies bottom 4 far too reliant on a few old players and ND with a very poor kp depth.

Port ruined Hawthorn's season twice, basically.
They kinda made it too. Harsh lessons learnt from that last 30 seconds and the centre bounce of the first loss.

Really got us going from there.

I think Hawthorn would've made and won a prelim if they won the first Port encounter, hosting Sydney in the grand final after beating Brisbane in the prelim.

Thank God that didn't happen.

I doubt we go on that crazy run had we beaten Port. A lot of lessons were learnt out of that game and we looked a lot more disciplined in games following

People love to say things like that to cope with important losses.

If I really wanted to I could say the losses to Hawthorn and NM early in 2007 were the catalyst for Geelong becoming a powerhouse club of the 21st century. It'd be a stretch though.

Close wins have defined clubs as much or more than throwing away 7 goal leads throughout history. Hawthorn were hitting great form either way, so top 2 would've given them a real shot at a premiership.

Port maybe had that 1% extra self belief from that game for the SF - which got them over the line.

The form team of the comp launching from 2nd instead of 5th-8th would have had them 1st or 2nd premiership favourites.

Indeed only 4pts 116% separated them in 2024. With carlton in between. Just made it in

I know your are a humble hawks fan.

There's always a chance your club could get hit with injuries then bounce back as finals contenders in 2026.

Demons of 2018 is a fine example. Averaged 104.5 points a game in the regular season. Won 2 finals vs cats and hawks in that 2018 finals series.

How did the demons go in 2019? Bottom 4. They got hit with injuries in 2019.

Demons finished just outside the top 8 in 2020 then Flag in 2021

True, but Strebi ain’t wrong though.

I was at training a couple of weeks after the port loss and standing with someone who has great connections at the club, Ratten was happy to stop and chat, spoke of how much the group learned from that loss and what it would do for the side going forward. He was not wrong.

2011 I think we beat them by 3 points, Buddy ran nearly the length of the ground to put the Hawks in front, then Ball kicked his longest kick ever, 20 metres to win the game.
I'll still never forget the roar when Ball kicked tha, my heart sank..

It was Daisy tackle on Rioli that was the turning point. Ripper game

Toss of the coin this one but both could and more then capable to make top 4 would not surprise me of a Collingwood v Hawthorn QF week 1 of the finals.

Fair enough.

It's not that I disagree with the adage you learn more from a loss than a win or anything. Maybe more of a reflection on what I thought that group would've done anyway if Port fluffed that final play (because surely the feedback and review process would still be the same).

Anyway, none of us know for sure so we're all right and everybody wins!

Hawks win in h and a but the Pies have that finals edge more recently. Hence the flag in 2023.
Still think Hawks will wait until 2026 for the flag.
Just another year away for them.
On the right track tho.
Same can get said about alot of teams like Freo Suns and even North and Crows not so much Crows tho.
Teams are on the up

on a non meme answer it is very concerning to have young stars not living an elite AFL life style, its what sets people like Pendles and Daicos apart. So many AFL stars fall off quickly or are unable to play out the crucial moments in finals games because they dont do 100% prep.

Daicos leaves no stone unturned in preperation and thats obvious when hes playing. Sam Mitchell can only be cool dad for so long until the lack of prep and poor work ethic of his young team comes back to bite them.
Hope Nick recovers from his full body cramp today, mate.

That elite prep he does was pretty obvious 10 minutes into the 3rd quarter when he could barely move.
