ALP voting bogan?

Several of the seats in the area are held by the Libs.
As I often say about Andre he rarely posts anything that has any actual insight.

No one would call anything out west "bogan" these days. Bogan land is The Shire (Scott Morrison's seat).

As soon as they were anounced I knew they would be shit, I have liked the gold coast so far though.

I'll keep that in mind for up coming marketing campaigns, I'm thinking big billboards, Featuring adolescent girls in wedding dresses holding sherrins.

Could work.

What are you selling? Coca-Cola?

This thread makes me glad that I have never lived in Sydney for some reason.

Lol, that Sydney sub region attitude thing is so true. It's like a country in itself.

West Sydney does cop it unfairly. It's often referred to as another country or the moon, which is crap. Canberra also gets the boring assumptions as well, you can never win. That said, the further you go west from the harbour, the more the suburbs are like these concrete-covered, ill-conceived horrors.

'Western Sydney' is a very nonspecific term. Cabramatta is very different to Punchbowl is very different to Balmain is very different to Blacktown is very different to Parramatta etc.

Some areas of Western Sydney are quite affluent. At last count, Sydney had roughly 80,000 millionaires and more than half of those lived west of the ANZAC Bridge. To give some perspective, the whole of Melbourne had 50,000.

Nearly all of Sydney north of the north-west motorway is middle to upper class. Some of those suburbs that are well west e.g. Castle Hill are suprisingly affluent.

So Housos is actually a documentary then?

No where near it.

House'o's is what people who've never had the displeasure of heading west imagine house'o's are like. Of course nowadays you need to head out to places like minto and ambervale to get the full hous'o's experience.

What do they use to define as millionaires? I would have thought anyone who owned property in the east would be a millionaire.

The problem with 'the west' as it is commonly conceived is that it has all the shit things the rest of Australian capital city suburbia has, but at Sydney's ridiculous prices.

I think the definition was investable net assets (i.e. excluding primary residence and consumer goods).

Yeah, Sydney's prices are ridiculous. This map is a bit of a reality check. In 1993 there were 5 suburbs in Sydney with median house prices over $1m - basically Vaucluse and a couple of waterfront microsuburbs. Now there's 163.

Suburbs like Eastwood and Ryde are full of relatively quite well-off people - high earning professionals, partners in legal and accounting firms - because buying a decent sized family home in the east or north is pretty much unachievable for anyone normal who didn't get in 20 years ago. Well, unless you're prepared to sacrifice a huge percentage of your income on a massive mortgage.

I was quite surprised to find out that the value of Australia's residential housing was $5 trillion. That's three times GDP.

By comparison both UK and US have a housing value that is about 1:1 with GDP. Not sure that means much but it does seem odd. Aside from the premium stuff, most of Australia's real estate is nothing spectacular.

I imagine it's shit because of the amount of crime in the area.
It seems there are often gang related shootings there.

Sounds like AA has upset the residents of Western Sydney. However, some Sydney suburbs are fairly dodgy but in saying that I know a few people from my home town who are currently living up there in Sydney so i can't really be too harsh.

Rule of thumb:

The further west you go, the more cars you see with boxing gloves, dice, and garters hanging of their rear view mirrors.

I would have thought it would be shit stickers and fluffy steering wheels, out west rearvision mirrors are considered a luxury, along with tire tread and working brake lights.

I have a relative who lives in Westmead and I went and visited him last year.

Didn't seem too bad. Just, I suppose, pretty boring.

I really don't know Sydney well at all, though.
