You have to feel for the selectors and coaching staff. At years end players have to be delisted as the club must draft at least 3 players.
This in itself isn't too difficult as general concensus would have Spencer,Playfair and Gardiner and possibly Callen delisted.
Then we have Hunt,Prismall and Byrnes as possible trade options.I nominate these 3 as there have been rumblings about lack of opportunities.
THE ROOKIES-
Grima,Davenport and Lonergan all have valid reasons to be promoted to the senior list.
Reynolds (who had only a 1 year contract) Due to his injury has missed his chance.
IMO both Grima and Lonergan should be promoted alleviating our shortage of KPP's.
Davenport is too good to cast aside and still has 1 year left on the rookie list.
The unfortunate injury to Owen would enable him to play seniors as Owen would be on the long term injury list.
This senario still leaves one more player to be delisted.I can see some sleepless nights for coaches and players alike.
Your thoughts?:(

so we only have to delist one player...
Easy...
But i can give ya 3
Playfair
Gardiner
Callan

All great two players but lets face it they all had there chance and never grabbed it.
I love davenport think he will be a super player and id keep grima too. Can never have too many up and coming kpp.

H & Charlie have 2 options.

One involves playing on another AFL list. I hope both take this choice as they don't deserve to fall out of the system when they can be playing in other (not so good) teams.

Wouldn't really consider it a head ache at all:

- Spencer
- Hank
- Charlie

Just a few names really. You could possibly throw Hunt, Byrnes and Tenace up as bait if we got a half decent pick in return.

I think youv'e missed the point,if we promote 2 rookies as I have suggested then we need to delist 5 players.
Therein lies the the problem.

My delistings would be
Spencer: Preseason was good but has gone backwards over the year. Only 22 but have to make a choice between him and Playfair and Playfair better backup forward or back
Gardiner: Like his endeavor but we now have better options
Callan: Great courage and good disposal He hasn,t been given much of a chance and would fit into other sides
Byrnes: Good backup player but cant keep them all Disposal a big negative
Tenace: Has gone backwards since his first year Again Disposal a big negative

We aren't going to be delisting Byrnes or Tenace. Both have played semi regular senior footy in the best side going around. Both have trade value. But I suspect we may keep both.

Delisted or traded doesn,t matter gone eitherway But make a committment and name your 5 its darn difficult

Why 5? Assuming no trades:

Delist: Spencer, Playfair, Gardiner. Retire: King.

Bring Grima up to the seniors, re-rookie Lonners, take 3 in the draft.

Lonners is too old to re-rookie. He and Grima need to be upgraded to the senior list if we want first dibs. Davenport could stay on for another year.

I would think that Playfair, Gardiner, Spencer, Callan & Sam Hunt would be the ones that are a little nervous come seasons end. I would think that a few of our players will be enticed to go elsewhere for more opportunities (J Hunt, Prismall, Byrnes, Tenace) so if it happens, that may give some of the above a much needed lifeline.

I've written in these threads all year round, WHY THE HELL ARE WE TALKING ABOUT DELISTING ALREADY ??

Surely with both sides going for the premiership, both with a great chance are we talking already about who we are going to delist and trade.

Give the guys a break, every single 36 regular players and the rookies are pushing each other for glory. Lets just let them finish the year and see where it goes from there.

I'd rather be proactive and support the whole squad than to think negatively already, the real season has only just begun.

yeah I have to agree. Who cares about it right now we have bigger fish to fry at the moment like trying to win the Flag this year.

You have your head buried under the lid my friend, looking at the list is an ongoing dilema,I do believe that there is a position of PLAYER management at the club. What do you think he's doing?

The draft is 1 or 2 weeks after the Grand Final,I think the club would be assessing the list ALL the time!
My point was the dilema the club finds itself with the depth they currently have.I appreciate that your focus is on the flag (no greater than mine, believe me) but surely there is no harm in discussing broader issues involving our great club. Thanks for your contributions fellows.

We are talking abouit it because as good as it is to win the Flag, its also good to see the club continuing to prosper and grow, and at the same time worried that a few good players may be dropped. Its not neccessarily a bad thing to look ahead to the future - I am sure Thompson always knows what type of players he going to be looking for in the draft next year, because whats a club does (presuming he has any interest in staying that is.)

I think we'll have to delist or trade if we are to draft any players.

Callan: Great courage and good disposal He hasn,t been given much of a chance and would fit into other sides
Strange because he came into the senior team and looked ok. Appeared to know where to find the ball.
Tenace: Has gone backwards since his first year Again Disposal a big negative
Agreed. All the pace in the world isn't going to change the fact that if you can't dispose of it properly, you're flogging a dead horse. Ask Leigh Harding.

In a perfect world this is what I would look at doing:
Elevate: Grima & Lonergan
Delist: Playfair, Spencer & Gardiner
Trade Callan for upgrade of Rd 3 pick.
We will then have:
Hawkins & Grima as KP forwards
Lonergan & Hunt as KP backs
+ Draft picks
That will give us just enough cover for KP's, particularly if we draft a tall early.

Ideally in the draft we pick up:
Pick 1: A KP backmen (Alex Rance?)
Pick 2: A ruckmen (Dawson Simpson?)
Pick 3: A 6' back pocket/HBF with good footskills. (Adam Donohue?)

Bomber is very conservative in his approach to list management. He will make as few changes as possible. He never gets rid of players (sometimes to his detriment) unless he's completely lost faith in them or he urgently needs to fill a gap. I would doubt anyone who's played more than a couple of games this year fits in that first category, and obviously there are no real gaps to fill.

If you haven't played a senior game this year and you've been there a while though you might start to think about next year, if you haven't already.
