What have we learnt ?

Taking all emotion out of today, what have we as a club learn't from the defeats against Hawthorn ?

We continue to let them play the loose man in defence. Their skills are far superior so instead of trying something different like man on man. Keeping three forwards firmly in the 50 at all times, we just play the same dumb chasing their backsides and guarding space in the hope of a turnover.

For f...k sakes, try something different for once!

If we had a good crumbing small forward who could get to the fall of the ball easily we wouldn't be chasing them as much.

That it's very hard to win a game of footy when the umpires are tripping all game.
But in all seriousness, we need far better ball and decision making around the ground and leaving the back half in order to have half a chance at winning games. This has been a pretty consistent problem for the past three seasons and yet there seems, after todays effort at least, to be little progress.
More games into a young and experienced defence today would be great as well. No matter how good a forward line is, you can't win a game of footy by having a leaky defence, something Melbourne have also proven quite a bit this year.
That Billy Elliot is an absolute superstar and I say that with the full meaning of the word, probably already knew that though
And that not having 5-6 of your best 22 makes it bloody hard to win a game of footy.

That is What Kennedy should try and be

I don't get it. Kennedy was in great form in the preseason and Blair was hardly sighted but Kennedy only gets a games as a sub and Blair walks back in the team.

Blair is a Bucks Favourite

I reckon more to the point why didn't he get the spot Broomhead got the last 2 weeks. He looked at home in the pace of the game pre season . Bit of a mystery why he hasn't got games as is in good form in the VFL. To me he shows a lot more than Broomhead

Probably to give Broomhead a taste of senior footy. Kennedy has been the sub allot of the time so it is probably better that Kennedy gets a full VFL game and Broomhead gets to see what senior footy is like.

Actually think we did ok today in the mid apart from late in the third where hodge stepped up which is more than I can say for the last couple of weeks. It was more the one on ones when it really counted that let us down. I also think we had the momentum when peddles got pinged for a throw and they ended up with a goal, what bullsh*t!

Last 2 weeks has been horrendous for the club. I had us pegged as a better list than we seem to be. To be essentially out of top 4 contention just after the mid point of the season is suggesting we are a fair way behind the leading teams now. If we want a flag in the next few years it would be much better to be staying around the mark of the top teams.

I worry about the thought that we can just build a team to rise back up to flag contention in 2015-16 on the back of a few youngsters maturing. Of our younger group I only see Elliott as giving performances suggesting he will mature into an A grader. A few others show potential but we are a long way off the maturing talent of a Gold Coast, GWS or even Port. I have always seen the 2010-11 list as a group who were young enough to be the nucleus of a 2nd flag. It is that group who are our real hope and they are starting to slip away a bit.

The last 2 weeks worry me a lot for our future.

Come on GC your only starting to waiver because you held us to very lofty standards that we simply weren't worthy of and many were at pains to warn you of this. Nothing has changed since the pre-season re Collingwood. We are a 5-8 side with the ability to challenge for the top 4 if things go our way. It's what we've been all along and the reality check of the past couple of weeks may have burst a few bubbles, but it just demonstrates where we're at.

With injuries to 11 of 19 players over 190cm on our list, Sidebottom receiving 3 weeks (he would have been huge today, IMO) and other seasoned campaigners slowing we just can't sustain it week in week out. If you re-align to a more realistic starting base you'll see the forest for the trees and that there is no need for concern in regards to our future.

A core D50 which has played circa 30 games together, a forward half with two weapons and poor fundamentals are just not a recipe for success, but we'll address that as players mature and we gain experience. We just have to hold our nerve this off-season and not run with umpteen list changes as we have year on end since 2010!

This is what Bucks said..."Hawthorn today was the side that seized those moments and we let them go. That's the big take home for us. “We did a lot right but there's a lot more for us to learn. We think we'll face them better next time."

Personally I am sick to death of hearing the same old excuses when we play the Hawks. Yet another 5 goal loss and I for one am well and truly over listening to how we will improve next time.

In fairness that was the best we've played against them since the first game in 2012. We stuck with them the whole game and it took an atrocious umpiring decision to give them enough momentum to power away at the end of the third.

Last year we were just completely torched in both games so that's a step forward there

Bit rough on White, IMO. He was very good as ruck support today. It effects his ability to hit the scoreboard though which just kills you without Reid or Karnezis available. Our hands are tied on it, but it works better than the two young rucks.
Play Grundy forward he can take a contested mark and is better in the ruck

We did play man on man at times but couldn't go with them we are too slow and too unskilled.

And too injured. I know we keep saying it, and it constantly sounds like excuses, but how can we truly judge a performance like that against a top team when senior players are missing, who just might match up better against individual Hawks? Or others recruited to fill positions who cant even get on the park for their first game? Even the loss of Langdon yesterday threw out the balance of an already undermanned defence, and a not 100% Frost. If we were closer to full strength, and still underperformed against last year's premiers, then we would have real concerns.

Yeah there may be an element of that but I also see others going too far the other way. I think people are chronically under estimating the worth of the 2010-11 players and have a belief that we just need a few youngsters to come in and replace foot soldiers like Blair, Heritier, Goldy, Toovs etc and we can march straight back up the ladder.

I am still of the opinion that if we are to jag a flag in the next 2-3 years it will be on the back of our already premiership players with some younger players coming in as replacements as required. I think we have a few really promising younger players like Elliott, Williams and Fasolo and a lot more that are B/C graders more likely.

Yes we have injuries but we have been poor skilled all year even when the injury list was lesser.
Not too mention Hawks list of outs.

What we've learnt is that we don't have enough forward options and it's hard to win when your back 6 is severely under-manned.

You guys were actually the ones that set up with 7 backmen v our 6 forwards today.

We allow them to go coast to Coast every time. Nothing changes.

Saw that quite a few times and the lack of Pressure was Disgusting at times

Well that allows you to play a spare man back doesn't it?
