So reading yet another Sheeds autobiography and he mentions how he had the original plan for him to coach post 2007 and have Hird take over in a succession plan which was obviously scuppered.

He also mentions that the only thing more baffling then Daniher being dumped by Melbourne was our decision to not appoint him as Sheeds replacement.

So what if either of those scenarios happened? I'll add my thoughts when I'm not so spaced out but just thought I'd get the ball rolling on this.

It would have been terrible (Sheedy to Hird).

We chose the right path by going in with someone fresh but a mistake in going someone who was already part of the organization in Knights. I was a fan of getting Hardwick but in hindsight he probably wouldn't have been the right choice either, someone completely disconnected to Essendon would have been the ideal candidate. From memory there were rumours surrounding Bluey McKenna at the time.

Neale Daniher? I guess the rot had started at Melbourne already so I'm not completely sure it would have been the right call to make. I wonder what would have happened if we went with someone like Longmire.

I suspect we were to insular a club around the Sheedy departure to not go with an Essendon person & expect to succeed - poor ol Matty Knight was doomed from day one. I know I didn't want him there & was stunned they didn't go with Hardwick. One thing I do know is that if Sheeds had still been around, no way someone like Dank gets in the door, the same with Daniher & Hardwick I suspect.

Anyway who really wants to look back at this period - Knights to Hird? Flush it like the turd it was.

I'm not sure Sheedy to Hird would've been a disaster. Reality is Hird didn't get any experience outside of the club before he took over and he wasn't the worst game day coach. But we absolutely would never have seen Dank near the club if he had Sheeds still looking over his shoulder.

What if, what if, what if, IF the saga bullshit hadn't happened Hird could possibly have gone on to be one of our great coaches.
N. D. would have been great for us, as would have Roger Merrett, only if.

We still would have been left with the list Sheeds left us with, with the same complaints.

Just probably no drug saga and still thinking 'we are Essendon' will be enough to win premierships

This, I believe.

Likely we wouldn't have had the saga, however we would have remained an incredibly insular club.

I suspect Hirdy would have benefited from being sheeds assistant because unlike a few others Sheeds is one person I believe would have seen through those peddling the supplement program however assuming we had the same list and the same results during that period then by now we probably would have moved on from Hirdy has coach.
