What is Ian Chappell problem with Steve Waugh

According to waughs autobiography he has never had anything more than a few passing conversations with chappell and none of them were nasty and confrontational, he basically doesn't know the bloke.

Waugh assumes one reason he's disliked by chappell is that he gave up playing the hook and pull shoot(and was quite vocal about it)admitting a weakness and improving yourself isn't really popular amongst the old school macho types like chappell.

But as carl said the attacks really stepped up after waugh got the captaincy gig over chappell's good mate warne, in particular after warne was dropped in the west indies the vitriol from chappell went into overdrive.

Essentially he beleived S Waugh was a selfish captain more concerned with the protection of his average than the team. He denotes times when Waugh elected not to bat when team was chasing a small total and promoting "nightwatchmen" when there was little to gain by his batting (to his average ) and a lot to lose. He also quotes the famous Sydney test where Waugh was more focused on acheiving his century when he could have gone out hard and given Australia the chance to win the game.

I find the criticism a little unjust given cricket is all about individuals and far removed from the concept of the "team" than any other sport.

Even this is stupid when you think about it. Chasing a small total would give a better chance for a not out which would boost the average.

Steve Waugh hit 102 off 135 balls that match, strike rate of just over 75. Hardly a slow century that one.

i know one of the critiscms of him was not farming the strike for lower order batsmen in small total chases....

as for promoting night watchmen ahead of him in small chases.....

all the others he batted 5 or DNB and in all those games we either won or drew with less than 3 wickets on the board.
