So a ball that is smothered off the boot on the boot in the goal square but dribbles through should be a goal? No thanks, I like the intention but don't think the execution is there.

it would be a big change, but why not? no different to any other sports. the ball is still being propelled through the goal by a kick. the purpose of a smother would be stop that happening, not to just clip the ball by a fingernail on the way through.

Any player that has a contract should be able to be traded to any club across Australia

If you want to have a salary cap, this rule is the extreme basics of having it
Not sure its reasonable to expect say a mature aged rookie on $150k to uproot his kids from school and wife from her job to relocate to Perth for a 12-month contract because he was traded. Having a level of protection based on salary allows clubs to trade bad contracts, gives clubs some power back against the managers who have got out of control. 1 mil was an arbitrary figure, but perhaps the league average of $650k is a good starting point.

Don’t ban the bounce. Train the umpires in proptbouncing technique. Not one umpire currently has a proper bouncing technique

Nope. Sack the bounce.
Give the chance to get better umpires.

We need better umpiring 1,000,000% more than a bounce.

The bounce and the pay rate are the two things stopping umpiring quality from improving.

Plenty of people have to take jobs away from their families.
Also, have a relocation cost bonus for players traded, simple.

The rules of the game need to be simple enough that they can be explained to a new casual observer across a game, or written out basically on a single page.

Not a seventeen novel anthology detailing tripe such as the definition of insufficient or sufficient intent.

Then and only then will umpires have a chance to be consistent.

Spot on

Not many are forced to relocate without consultation or agreeing to the move, and even in the private sector most who are relocated would be on exec level salaries well above $150k.

I don't really care about the bounce. Keep it, bin it, the game won't really change.

The #1 thing stopping umpiring quality from improving is the the peanuts at AFL house that change the rules and interpretations every 5 minutes. The umpires didn't get together and come up with 'insufficient intent' on their umpires end of season trip, the AFL did. The AFL tells them to interpret it that way, fans get annoyed that kicks off the side of the boot that bounce sideways are paid as free kicks and the umpires get the blame. Same as the AFL tells them to use the score review and fans get annoyed that there are 10 of them a game and you have to look at the same grainy vision over and over.

Just once the AFL should tell the umpires in pre-season that they should do what they did last season.

The AFL created 'insufficient intent' to increase crowd engagement with an attempt to match soccer's raucous in-match vibe. They don't care about the ruling at any given time being correct, only that both sets of fans beg for/decry the decision in their sides favour. Until all fans of all clubs cease to engage, it will remain unchanged.

This is a serious one, which while not unpopular at the moment, if it should be realised the Victorians will scream.
As it stands Darwin comes under the Suns academy zone and the ACT falls under the giants. When asked why its part of their zone its because the ACT is closely aligned with NSW as it used to be a part of NSW until federation.

Fine, lets stick with that reasoning. If the AFL claims it is fair and national, then the Northern Territory needs to come under both Adelaide and Port. Just like the ACT used to be part of NSW, the NT used to be part of SA. It was South Australia's "Northern Territory".
There is no historical bond between the Gold Coast and the NT. Hand over the NT to SA where it rightly belongs and watch the improvement in indigenous kids getting into the system.

Bring back Collective Mind you reckon?

I was taught to bounce properly 50 years ago at 16. I’m 66 now and I can still bounce the ball high and straight. With proper training all umpires can bounce competently. It’s a unique part of our sport that shouldn’t be discarded for the sake of convenience.

Do you really think the umpires aren't being trained to bounce the ball?

Facts are its an oval ball and even slightly off that things going to shoot off in any direction.

Eliminate that by removing the stupid bounce altogether and just throw it up. Another one of our stupid rules that is only around due to "iTs TrAdItIoN".

Of the 24 GFs since 2000, 14 have had a Vic team vs interstate and 9 of these had the Vic team winning it

Collingwood vs Brisbane Lions
Geelong Cats vs Sydney Swans
Richmond vs GWS Giants
West Coast Eagles vs Collingwood
Richmond vs Adelaide Crows
Western Bulldogs vs Sydney Swans
Hawthorn Hawks vs West Coast Eagles
Hawthorn Hawks vs Sydney Swans
Hawthorn Hawks vs Fremantle Dockers
Sydney Swans vs Hawthorn Hawks
Geelong Cats vs Port Adelaide
Brisbane Lions vs Collingwood
Brisbane Lions vs Collingwood
Brisbane Lions vs Essendon

Apart from Dogs 2016 (dont think MCG was an advantage) & Richmond 2017 (MCG big advantage), I think the winner has genuinely been the best team of that season (from this list). What grand finals do people think would have had a different outcome if it was played at a neutral venue?

I personally think the biggest advantage lies in teams like Richmond, Collingwood, Carlton etc not travelling throughout the H&A season.
Hawthorn v West Coast.

WC beat them in in the QF in Perth and were rewarded with having to play the GF at the G

- the ball should only be deemed 'touched' if it's touched on the way down. ie a kick touched off the boot or clipped by the man on the mark can still be marked or count as a goal.
Totally

Nothing worse than a good goal ruined by touched off the boot replay.

It the smother was half decent the ball wouldn't have made to the goal anyway.

And by losing the QF Hawthorn were rewarded with flying to Perth twice in 3 weeks. And beat the #1 seed Freo to make the GF. I would say Collingwood had a bigger advantage in 2018 playing an away PF at the G the week prior. However we make a GF, it always involves cross country travel the week of at least once. 2006 we played in Adelaide then back to Perth then to Melbourne probably the Thursday before the game. That's geography.

The GF is at the MCG. Everyone knows that going in. I think the bigger advantage Victorian teams have is the higher probability of not travelling for away finals. Balanced out by more neutral finals but the travel burden is still reduced. There has been one Showdown final, 4 Sydney/GWS finals and no Western Derby or Pineapple Grapple finals. Just Geelong and Hawthorn have played 6 times since 2000. Most of the time as a non-Vic side if you don't earn home ground advantage you are travelling somewhere.

The AFL also don't appreciate that the game has changed since the 80s and 90s. When we played Geelong in 1992 they played 5 away games at the MCG to our 3. All of their home games were at Kardinia Park or Waverley. Obviously we had to travel further but it wasn't a huge ground advantage. At that time Collingwood played 3 home games and 3 away games there. They've already played there 10 times so far and have 4 of the last 5 which is a handy lead in to finals. It's a big difference when one team can play at a venue 15 times and another team just once during the season.

It's just one of the 900 issues the AFL have their head in the sand over. If it's not an issue then the next time Geelong make a GF get them to bring the ropes in so the field is Kardinia Park shaped. :)
