What would it take to get Charman?

Charman was shopped around last year so it wouldn't surprise me if he was on the table again this year. Having said that, I've got no idea what it'd take to grab him. Probably a second rounder or a decent midfielder.

Sure, if you give us all of your future draft picks.

Too funny! Seriously, I would expect that, IF Charmo was to be traded (big big big big big IF), he would want to stay in QLD so the Gold Coast would have to come up with some of those ridiculous draft pics of theirs to make it worth the Lions' while. Perosnally, I would be devastated to see Charmo go; he is gold!

Even for a second rounder in a draft without much depth? Isn't the opportunity to get a good youngster more important than having ruck back-up?

I suggest you get a tape of yesterday's game and watch Brogan/Lade vs. Clark/Brennan.

Granted, we didn't have a full-time ruckman but having a quality back-up ruckman is important. Not the be all, end all of winning games but important to teams that don't have Geelong-esque midfields.

Just to clarify, by 'back-up ruckman' do you mean the 2nd ruck, who would be in a club's 22, or a 3rd ruck, who wouldn't? I agree that a second ruck is important, but I'm not so sure a 26 year old third ruck who can't make your side is more important than an opportunity (that will be rare in this year's shallow draft) to pick a quality player . This is why I think this would be a win-win-win for player and both clubs. Charman will be best 22 at Port next year, if Clark and Leuenberger are playing he probably won't be for Brisbane. We need a ruckman, you don't. You also probably need a good youngster more than we do looking at the state that both of our lists are in.

I'm talking about a 2nd ruckman. Charman is in our best 22, IMO. The fact of the matter is that the only person ahead of Charman, when all three ruckman are available, is Leuenberger.

A fit Charman is still our best ruckman. He played all of last year under duress and never should have started this season off in the seniors given his pre-season. I reckon having what's virtually a full season off could be a blessing in disguise for the Emu and he may well bounce right back to his best in 2010.

Having said all that, a free back, sack and crack might get the deal over the line.

Um lionfan17 that isn't even funny. Charman was in all aussie form before getting injured back in 2006 vs essendon and has been carrying injurys ever since! He is quite a good player when not giving away free kicks and losing his head. 2nd or 3rd rounder for Charmo although I would be gutted to see him leave the lions.

Oh and lionfan17 you know your signature. Why is Brown in our future. Clark taps to Rich who kicks to Brown on lead-the future of the Brisbane Lions. Mate, Brown will be retired in the future! Just letting you know, not having a go at you for saying Brown is in our future. Maybe to Clouston on the lead or Cornelius?

I don't agree with the comments about Charman being in our best two ruckmen. I think Leuenberger and Clark have the form from their most recent appearances to suggest that they would be ahead of Charman, going on his most recent performances. With that said, I am in two minds as to whether we should trade Charman at the end of the year. He is capable of coming back to play reasonable football and add some value and security in the case of injury to Leuenberger and Clark. Both Leuenberger and Clark have a history with injury (as does Charman) and Leuenberger is still yet to prove that he is able to overcome his injury worries (as is Charman, mind you).

I also think the time may has passed for us to get good value in a trade for Charman. I think the best time might have been about 2 years ago, but we ended up trading C.Wood instead. I'm not sure that we'd get much in a return for Charman at this point in time, so it might just as well be more value to us to keep him.

Charman's best seasons were probably in 2004 and 2006 and even so, he still wasn't in the best 2-3 ruckmen in the league (although, he was probably close in 2006). I think Charman has gone backwards since the end of 2006.

Charman is not one of the taller rucks going around and neither does he possess a great leap. So, on top of the fact that his tap work is not that great, he is very rarely in a position to dominate the ruck contests. I would suggest that whilst Charman's aggression can be a positive for the team, he is generally fairly average around the ground and exerts little influence through actual general play, particularly in comparison to someone like Clark.

Although Clark was beaten soundly by Lade and Brogan (which has been the best ruck combination over the course this decade), he has probably shown more in his short time in the ruck this year than Charman has in the past. For one, I think that Clark's tap-work is better and two, he is much more effective around the ground as well as at ground level at the stoppages. Clark also possesses a huge leap and has good skills with the football. Clark cannot be judged solely on this week's game, as there are many times when Charman has been equally as badly beaten in the ruck and around the ground.

While Charman hasn't been in the best of form for a long time now, I'm more interested in getting Clark ready to take on a KP spot. Brownshaw isn't going to last forever so we need to fill that void so Clark, in my opinion, will only be available to do some ruck work when necessary.

In saying that, by the time Brownshaw are ready to retire so will Charman (or he'll be close to it) so that'll create another void.

Grrr, some of the comments here about Charman are really unfair, even if in jest. For so long now Charmo has been forced to play injured for the team, just wait for him to return fully fit! He will impress again. Charmo kicked 3 goals against West Coast late last season, remember? He also helps out going back as an extra tall in defence or by floating forward to draw away defenders in the goal square. Charmo plays with passion and I for one thought we sorely missed his heart and aggression yesterday in that appalling game against Port.

His value though at the end of this year may as silly as it sounds be slightly higher than last year.

I know our rucks are thin but trading Charman depends on the confidence of our coaching staff has in Tippet, Bart and Murray

Teams like Geelong, Hawthorn, Bulldogs rucks stocks are pretty thin, forget the woeful year the Hawks have had all 3 clubs will be thinking they are flag chances next year. The idea of getting Charman for a small mid (McGlynn, Djekkurra, Reid and a 2nd round selection may not be out of the question)

Yeah, I guess it's a case of "you'll never know if you never ask". There could well be a market out there for Charman amongst those teams who feel that they would benefit from a ruck who could potentially perform reasonably well in the short-term. There are a few sides, like the ones you have mentioned, and possibly even Collingwood as well, who could possibly fit the bill.

I'd really like to see us give another ruck a go this year. Tippett seems to be the most likely option, given that he can't be re-rookied next season.

I see that you are trying to feather the nest for another Hawks flag here, Nino. Are you sure that your allegiances aren't a bit conflicted in all this talk of trades and flags? :p

I wouldn't mind trading someone like Roe for McGlynn, to be honest. Seems to be a win-win situation.

I also wonder if the Hawks would consider taking T.Johnstone, considering their success last year with S.Dew. They could probably use a player, who when playing well, is good at getting a lot of the ball in space and using it well. Johnstone's form from this year might detract them though and we certainly would be downgraded in whatever return we would get in a trade, compared to what we gave up.
