Whats going on with the China game?

Oh ffs stop lying

Tony Cochrane and Supercars

How did that go for him again? Oh, that's right:

Despite the hype of the visiting Australian media for the inaugural Chinese event, local sources were less than enthusiastic and many feel the date change may be means of extracting Chinese promoter The Greenland Group from its current contract with VESCA.

In the case of China, despite strong crowds, the promoter lost interest.

Like I said - money is immaterial. Friendships and partnerships are key.

It is our home game. It will be Port Adelaide signage plastered everywhere with no reference to Gold Coast whatsoever, with Port Adelaide controlling match day entertainment and Port Adelaide getting all sponsorship and marketing revenue from the ground. What the fixture says is only a technicality. We bought all the rights to a home game.

It's Port Adelaide, in conjunction with the AFL, coming up with the $4m to re-turf the surface of the stadium and upgrade the facilities through sponsorships we have acquired through our China Strategy. Gold Coast are just coming along for the ride and have contributed nothing towards it other than the involvement of the Gold Coast Tourism Board.

It's Port Adelaide that has introduced the game of Australian Rules football to a market that is hungry for sport of any kind, not the great pissup that Brisbane and Melbourne turned their exhibition match over there into. All the relationships we have built took three years to foster through contacts at a grassroots level.

So when he says "You can wear red but it will be your last game in China" you better believe it will be the Suns last game in China. The AFL isn't stupid enough to let this opportunity pass it by when they've pretty much reached saturation point in terms of television rights and sponsorship in this country.

This isn't about the jumper itself. It's about respecting the work we have done to make it possible and not allowing a side that has done nothing to help and getting paid 600k for it (more than what they would get from a Port/Suns game at Metricon) trying to push their own agenda as if they deserve yet another free hit.

The AFL appointed Evans as Gold Coast CEO because they want someone who Port Adelaide was already dealing with in this to continue to work with us. That's how big this is - Evans would rather be CEO of Gold Coast than Hawthorn.
I remember hearing something about how condescending it would be for anyone to think the Chinese would flock to GCS just because they're wearing the national colours. As if, as someone pointed out, we Australians would flock to a foreign team wearing green and gold. All these thoughts, I read from your camp.

Why, then, is it now an issue you're prepared to defend?

I actually hope all of that is correct.

Who's gonna bankroll it? They can't even bring one Chinese company to the table to help cover the cost of putting the game on. How many relationships have they cultivated over there? Zero.

How many Chinese companies have the AFL brought to the table? Zero.

Meanwhile Port Adelaide has AusGold, Shanghai CRED and Cathay Pacific, as well as partnerships with the Hong Kong Football Club (where Port Adelaide members have reciprocal rights mind you), CCTV and schools across Shanghai and Guangzhou.

Neither the AFL nor Gold Coast have any power at all in China. This was built on the back of relationships and doing things like sponsoring Team China to enable them to travel to participate in the International Cup. They'll try to use Mark Evans to hijack the Suns into being 'China's team' through the introductions he would have made through being the AFL's representative in dealing with organizing the match, but it won't work because that's not how you do business in China.

It's not like Australia where money is the most important thing - friendships and partnerships are.

Wow. What a load of bullcrap.

You've read a few Port Adelaide propaganda media articles, seen that they've scored some sponsors and suddenly you know all about China.

I don't think many are questioning the work Port Adelaide have done. I agree with you 100% regarding the importance of partnerships, friendships and building trust from the ground up. Port have done a fantastic job of this and should be applauded for having a long term vision rather than conducting a smash and grab pre-season game which the AFL tried.

However, by the same token- Koch is not endearing himself to other clubs by his bullying propaganda and disgraceful treatment of the Suns, who happen to be doing Port Adelaide a favour- because without Gold Coast agreeing to one less HOME game at Metricon, Port Adelaide might as well be playing an intra-club in Shanghai against the Magpies.

How many people in China are seriously going to be won over by this match?
Selling Australian rules football to China is incredibly difficult. Very few oval shaped grounds and then the language barrier. Mean it won't really expand in the short term.
China is drawn to big global sports like soccer where it can draw attention and prestige on the international stage (Dollars going into making them a reasonable chance at making the world cup is insane). Not a sport only played significantly in one country. Everyone just looks at the population and hopes they can break into the market. Good media exercise for the AFL and politicians.
If the AFL and clubs wanted to grow the game internationally they would target cricketing nations NZ, South Africa, India and England. As they have oval shaped grounds, speak English and have sporting rivalries with Australia.
If you can't even get NZ to embrace AFL how can you seriously expect success in any other country?

But Adelaide is big enough for 2 clubs

lol youd think Gc are just handing us a home game by some of these 'opinions'
We have bought it, not given it by the goodness of GCs heart haha.
No. You haven't. You have paid GC to move a home game to another venue. It remains a GC home game. Port had to stump up cash otherwise their great China expansion concept would have gone down the gurgler due to its utterly incompetent and short sighted handling. You're pretty lucky the AFL have attempted to save Port from big time embarrassment

We were going to have to buy a home game from whoever we negotiated to go with us. This isn't something that fell on us and we had to be rescued from. We're locked in to 11 home games at Adelaide Oval and buying a home game was on the cards from day 1.

What a strange argument to make.

No one should be giving up thier home game so Port can benefit. How ungrateful port are.

Do you genuinely believe that Gold Coast did this out of the goodness of their own hearts and purely to benefit Port?

They are doing no groundwork and making off like bandits.

Looking forward to once GC build some support, moving a few of their home games to China, the AFL will back it, they are probably sick to death of pouring millions into the club and need it to start generating some cash, what could be a better way than with its colors and location on the GC, to be a joint China/ GC team. Play four games a year in China.

After all Leigh Matthews doesnt beleive two teams can survive in QLD

I mean it's possible long term.

But we didn't just decide this year to play a game in China. This has been years and a lot of groundwork in the making. We've fostered the business relationships that are making this game happen. Gold Coast and the wider AFL are just along for the ride.

Just along for the ride?

Without AFL or Gold Coast this match wouldn't have got up. You can do years of Chinese business deals in preperation for playing there but the fact you can't move your own home game means you are at the beck and call of those "just along for the ride" until your contract with Adelaide Oval expires.

Kochie is losing the very small amount of friends he has left at a very fast pace.

Thats fine, but nothing is stopping GC from taking maybe 5 of its home games to China if it is a success, you may or may not be invted, we know Port cant they are contracted to AO. Maybe the AFL will decide to allow GC to play 5 games in China as their hme games. After all it is well and truly in the AFL's interest to have GC paying for itself, they are draining the AFL with so many millions per year. Great solution and if china like GC for the fact they have the same colors as their flag thats just an added bonus, it gives them a sense of ownership in a way. We are all aware the chinese love going to sunny QLD aswell.

Without the AFL or Gold Coast this wouldn't have happened but it did happen because of the enormous commercial potential in the concept.

We aren't thanking the AFL for being gracious enough to allow this, they are thanking us for making it happen.

If it wasn't the Suns it would have been someone else. Arguments about who wears what guernsey are hardly new in the AFL.

Again, you can't just book flights to China and expect to be able to play there and have it be a commercially viable activity.

Port have done the groundwork over a few years to build up business relationships and make this a commercially viable activity. Not the AFL and certainly not the Suns.
