I just can't understand why the afl is obsessed with getting the season on with asap considering health experts saying we still haven't reached the peake of it yet and were in a lockdown .How can you put a date on it cannot see sport starting any time soon a they living in a bubble. The get going of round 1 was nothing more then publiitcty for me and now this rubbish putting it on when the Olympics were suppose to be on.Question is are states willing to be used as hubs and a players all willing to go.
Interesting to watch the NRL floating their idea of re-starting their Season...watching with interest here...

Is anyone else upset and just real flat, thinking that we are losing 12 months of football while we are legitimately in our premiership window?
What does this do to the careers over our older players who are going to be 12 months closer to the end?
Does this mean Jack and Cotch retires 12 months later due to not having 12 months of ‘bash and crash’ on their bodies?
Been thinking about these kind of things a fair bit and it’s getting me down.

Pretty simple really - it's called financial survival. These Clubs and the League need inflows as the overheads demand it. The AFL wants TV rights payments (obviously not as desperate as the NRL who are dead ducks if they don't play this season and will need a government bail-out or a white knight! )

How has it not peaked when new infections are down , doesn’t make any sense . In Victoria it was 10 overnight . We re trending to 2-3 by month end . Is that peak ?

More people died in the second wave of Spanish flu than the first.

Infections are down because we closed the borders to new arrivals that could have CV and spred it...Social Isolation has slowed down the spred of CV...the only thing we don't know for certain is how much CV is still spreading in the general population only testing will tell us that...we may get a spike from unknown cases...the second wave of CV deaths...

That's essentially it Frehley.

I'm a bit torn though about a re-start to AFL be it June, July or whatever. On one hand I dunno if it sends a good message on the safety-health front (although you'd assume they wont start up unless government and medical approval is 100% water tight but even then things can still change so quickly with this virus) and I dunno if it means much when its obviously going to be such a totally compromised season. Hubs ? Heavily amended fixture including finals format ? No crowds ? GF in Perth maybe in front of nobody ?

Then, on the other hand, maybe some football is better than none at all and good for the nation's psyche and helps shore up the game's future as you point out. I have to admit, even though it was weird, I enjoyed round 1 and being able to switch off from all the worldwide and local negativity by watching a bit of footy over a few beers at home.

Smarter people than us will work it out I guess.

Agree with much of that, but how you and I feel about it is irrelevant. There are such bigger forces at stake. Clubs with survival on their mind, who have employees also with so many things on their minds, some survival, some with care, some just struggling with paying a mortgage and feed the family. Then there are players with the same things on their minds - but on steroids (not litterally, hopefully). Their thoughts for a good many footballers are maxxed with an extra $0 on the end, and getting worse the longer this goes.

The format is almost irrelevant to begin with, the money flow is. Of course they will be looking towards the most relevant model, but in the back of their minds they will be thinking, lets just get something happening, because if we get that, we can do more perhaps, prove it's possible, tweek it - find out what we can do, all the whilst getting the money to go around. TV just wants content, to sell advertising. Care factor, zero! Ever mindful of their responsibilities, care is zero beyond selling advertising off it - that is their survival technique.

If the AFL can find a way to make it work with medical incidents minimised, I wont care if it is hoppo bumpo in AFL jumpers. I do a bit, but you get what I mean. Step one is just to grease the wheels again, it may not be a pretty journey, but it's a means to fit the ends. I'll buy another membership, even for another team, if that helps. I want what we had back again somehow. Not sure when, but small steps.

footy, even without the crowds, will probably save some lives during this time. it is a must
Explain to me how footy will save lives? It is not a must. Protecting the community is a must and I do not see any reason football takes precedence over people's well being. Don't use the arguments that it will improve mental health or it will keep people indoors socially isolating. This attempt to start football in pods etc is nothing more than a money grab.

Don't use the argument it will improve mental health? Well it will, mental health will play a big part during all of this and you're a fool to ignore it.

Does anyone else think all this talk of reduced playing lists is just another way the AFL are trying to reduce Richmond's dominance?

The depth at our club is second to none, AFL & VFL premiers

GAGF haters.

Using football as a saviour is rediculous. Concerts would service more of the community with less chance of spreading the virus. I'm not ignoring mental health but I don't think football will save many lives, if any. Ensuring isolated people with Mental health issues have someone to confide in and communicate with is far more important than football.

List reduction has not yet been confirmed and I'm not sure it can be imposed this year legally.

Do you think I'm calling it a saviour? over done by you, ok, here's your mentality. AFL cures coronavirus. give it up mate. Yeah, and you know what they will say to those they are communicating with, " I want things to start being normal again, like being able to watch footy" .......

with international boarders closed and isolation measures in place we are seeing a reduction in new cases

but how low do we go before a relaxing of the isolation measures ????

Australia, being physically isolated in the southern hemisphere I think we are likely to have less hidden cases in the community
compared to Asian and European countries

time will tell , if we get to mid May and went a week with no new cases , the screams to relax internal restrictions will be huge and the government will be keen for businesses to get up and running again and the AFL & NRL are businesses

we will be conservative with the Sweden experience still fresh but mid/late may the pressure will pile on to relax isolation

it could be we restart in June and have a season of no crowds

Define "No new cases"! It is the rock on which arguments are won and lost for me.

The way you worded the original post was designed to get some attention - as a savior to some people! Footy should not save anyone, it is game, but it can be a catalyst for better choices or motivation for some. For most though, it is part of life, not life in itself!

I think the AFL thinks about Richmond no more than any other Club. It thinks a lot about GWS and GCS becuase it must.
