The way you worded the original post was designed to get some attention - as a savior to some people! Footy should not save anyone, it is game, but it can be a catalyst for better choices or motivation for some. For most though, it is part of life, not life in itself!

Like it or not it gives some people an opportunity to escape the reality of their lives For a few hours a week. In some cases it probably does help them be in a better mental state by giving them something to look forward to throughout the week. Also gives them something to talk about think about and process apart from the stresses of their own lives.
Ask anybody they really want footy back to give them something to look forward too. To you and I it may be “just a game” but to some it may be just the tonic to ease the pressures off their minds for a while.
Coming out of this pandemic when people are struggling it may just be the white knight that lifts spirits.

I agree with you, but it's a positive step and come on you gotta admit it's a big thing of what we have. Overall, with everything I've said, I believe it comes back end of may as planned, people will feel a return of normality (that is how big footy is in our lives) and be less likely to "jump"....mental health is huge during this time.....

Is anyone else upset and just real flat, thinking that we are losing 12 months of football while we are legitimately in our premiership window?
What does this do to the careers over our older players who are going to be 12 months closer to the end?
Does this mean Jack and Cotch retires 12 months later due to not having 12 months of ‘bash and crash’ on their bodies?
Been thinking about these kind of things a fair bit and it’s getting me down.

I’ve barely given any thought to the footy

I’m not sure if football is coming back this year. And if it is, it’s only going to be on the basis of no crowds which has every possibility of extending into 2022 given some recent up to date reading of viral and pandemic experts and how they believe cv works and spreads, re-infection, strains, 2nd surges and timelines on vaccines and therapy.

Got a feeling things like social distancing, isolation, quarantining etc are going to be the new normal for quite some time.

Well said , there’s a reason the game is so popular and that it cuts across all sections of the community , indeed it’s a great form of escapism from life’s daily grind. Without it , all we got to endure is that god forsaken grind

8 new cases in Victoria overnight ,159 still infected. Trending toward 0-3 by months end. Footy to be played interstate June July , in Melbourne September is realistic. You can’t advocate closing down mankind on the back of < 100 people infected which will be the case within 30-60 days

it's all about a vaccine - WHEN a vaccine/cure is found - everything i believe will move forward quickly as a lot of the fear will be removed and then its CCAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRNNNNNNNNN the Tiges premiership defense .... bring it on :praying:

That’s all fine and well those numbers but it can change very very quickly for as long as there’s any community transmission that you don’t keep on top of. So how do you keep on top of it until you have a scientific solution ie a vaccine (which incidentally isn’t a guarantee in and of itself anyway) ? You adjust socialisation like we are doing now.

And yes you can’t keep everything shut down forever, I’m not saying that. What I am saying is that things are not going to operate the way they used to for some time yet. This isn’t something where at some specific date and time the gov and medical experts all go “Well, she’s all over boys. Numbers look real good. Everyone and everything back to normal straight away.” It’ll be a slow deflation. Small reference article below.

And that's when trouble starts...and the big stick gets wielded...just like School! ;) :D

I'm a tad concerned that if they do bring footy back delayed we might struggle up forward this season, seems to take Jack & Tom at least 8-10 weeks to get some form into their games before we cut loose and destroy our opposition in the run home.

thats off the Fed governments website
as we all know the hidden number is how many people in the community with it ?
and if we stopped the lock down tomorrow would it flare up ?
Sweden has showed it can and will
international boarders will be closed for a long time
but internal lock down measures will come under pressure as early as next week if we start seeing days of 0 new cases
so what happens next ?
clubs , cafes and resturants can open but limits on capacity
football codes to restart and be like horse racing , no crowds
schools - well thats become a state versus federal battle ground
with no vaccine in sight if we have weeks of super low or no new cases the screams to open up will grow louder and louder
the smart phone tracing app could become a key part of the open up time table
and as new cases appear do localised lockdowns something like North West Tassie

footy will return in 2020

Im sympathetic to both sides of the argument. The one term missing in the last few posts is "asymptomatic carriers" - and it is required to fill in the gap between there being so few reported new cases and the belief there is ongoing risk.

The one thing all the reported cases have in common is that the people concerned 'displayed symptoms'. That's why they got tested in the first place. People without symptoms are not being tested, so the decline in 'confirmed cases' is only a decline in those who have visible symptoms; it does not mean the virus has stopped circulating in the community: THUS, if restrictions come off, the risk is these "Asymptomatic carriers" who arent counted in current numbers will share out the virus widely once more, and hey presto the number of patients with visible symptoms will pop up again. The logic behind delaying any relaxation until end of May is to leave 3-4 weeks where there have been no 'visible/recorded' cases to allow time for the invisible/asymptomatic' cases to also wash out of the community. The extra time is worth it to ensure there is no 2nd wave, and equally, because there is a view that we cannot cope economically with a second 'shut down'. If that happens we are truly truly screwed. We need this current shutdown to be a one off, and work, and 3 extra weeks of it even if daily 'confirmed cases' fall to Zero will be worth it.

It's why I have always discerned that cases are only the known cases. The unknown infection can easily outnumber the known infection. It's not until we do some significant sample testing that we will have any idea on which to base reasonable decisions on.

So if the season ends and we start back up in 2021 how does the draft work?

Perfect time to use a lottery draft system?

yes, and in the few places this had been done (testing random sample of people) the ratio of people who had the virus but were ansymptomatic ranged between 10 to 1 (for every 1 visible person, 10 more had it but had no symptoms), and in another place is was 1 to 100 (!!) -and in one place all of the people were asymptomatic, but 30% of them showed antibodies - ie they had the virus previously without knowing it. These are small random samples so the numbers are very unreliable but its the same numbers our governments have to work with. Wide scale community testing just isn't possible yet (but soon will be!)

That's very interesting.
