The way you worded the original post was designed to get some attention - as a savior to some people! Footy should not save anyone, it is game, but it can be a catalyst for better choices or motivation for some. For most though, it is part of life, not life in itself!
Like it or not it gives some people an opportunity to escape the reality of their lives For a few hours a week. In some cases it probably does help them be in a better mental state by giving them something to look forward to throughout the week. Also gives them something to talk about think about and process apart from the stresses of their own lives.
Ask anybody they really want footy back to give them something to look forward too. To you and I it may be “just a game” but to some it may be just the tonic to ease the pressures off their minds for a while.
Coming out of this pandemic when people are struggling it may just be the white knight that lifts spirits.
