Seeing that England has won an Ashes series in Australia only 2 times since World Series Cricket finished-1986/87, and 2010/11 indicates there is a major problem within the standards of English cricket.

The dropping of Stuart Broad and James Anderson before the first Ashes Test at the Gabba didn't help matters.

So what has gone wrong with English cricket?

Is too many counties (20) that compete in the County Championship the problem?

Are there too many white ball (ie T20) competitions within the English cricket structure and not enough of the red ball variety (ie County Championship)?

Or, is the people that run the game holding England back from becoming a real force in the cricket world?

Discuss.

Not sure this is a major issue, most countries struggle when playing away.

Yeah, not sure what they doing with these two, as they aren't in the West Indies.

Not sure if they are in their plans for their home summer, but this could be a backward step if they are, especially that they will want to find room for Joffra Archer as well.

Yeah, can't answer this , although they do need to find a few more quality test batsmen.

Other than that, these questions always seem to come up when England are struggling.

Had a look at England's schedule for the 2022 home summer.

England has 6 test matches at home-3 versus New Zealand, and then another 3 against South Africa, with a 3 game ODI and a best of 3 T20 series against India in between the NZ and SA Tests (COVID19 issues permitting).

Only 18 county’s and for the most part it’s been 8 in div one and 10 in div two

It's 18 counties isn't it? It was 17 forever and then Durham made it 18.

In any case I'm not sure that is the problem, given that for years 17 counties produced plenty of quality of Test players/sides.

1. Needs to have County cricket played in summer instead of the split season (like the Shield here)
2. Under the Tories playing fields have been flogged off and participation rates continue to fall. Private school obs are over represented.in county and Test sides. Not an easy fix.
3. Racism. With heaps of Asian and Carribbean people interested in and playing the game reforms underway at Yorkshire and other Counties should help pathways.
4. There are no quick fixes, though dumping the Duke Ball may help in the short term.
