Where does Marcus Bontempelli sit in the players of this era

Personally I'd argue that his peak has been far longer than Kouta's.

You can make a case for him being a top 3 player in the game since way back in 2017, and for the being the best player in it for 4-5 seasons now.

I just can't see him slowing down either. I'm not a betting man, but I'd put money on him maintaining his current level of performance for another 3 years minimum.
I don't think he was saying Bont had a 2 year peak. Just that his (extended) peak has been at the level of quality Kouta reached those couple of seasons.

I'm not going to get into a pi$$ing match about who is better than who. I just know that going into this season my wish list is as follows:

  • Freo win the flag
  • Treacy wins the Coleman
  • Bont wins the Brownlow

It will be an absolute scandal if Bont doesn't win one and he is hands down my favourite non-Freo player of the last 10 years.

Bont will be a legend of the AFL for sure.

6 x AA
3 x AFL MVP
6 x B&F
1 x flag
1 x coaches award

He’s 29yo.

Pendles has 6 x AA and 5 x B&F and won’t get any more. He also has 1 x coaches award, and zero AFL MVP (Leigh Matthews trophy). 2 x flags. 1 x Norm Smith

I believe Pendlebury will be awarded legend status and rightly so, and other than longevity Bont’s personal resume will be a decent whack superior to Pendlebury’s at career end so assuming he has another 3-4 quality seasons as a minimum, Bont’s a lock for legend status.

Not sure why you quoted me and then talked about Pendles.

I compared Bont and Dusty.

easily goes down as one of the singular most impactful leaders at any club.

i can think of maybe 2 games in recent seasons where he hasn't been one of the best on the ground.

My understanding is that he wants to coach as well and noting his ability to read the game, I'd be surprised if he is not a good one. I'd hope the Dogs would grab him first chance as an assistant, but I suspect he will have a lot of options.
Generally I think its a mistake for one club players to go straight into coaching at their own club. Whether for the changing relationships or just some different experience elsewhere they are better off spending a year or 2 elsewhere before "returning home".

For example I reckon Sam Mitchell was always going to be a good coach but the year or 2 away made him a better one

Greatest ever Bulldog.

Depends how you classify the generations, but he sits at the table with Fyfe, Danger, Franklin, Pendles. GAJ, Cripps etc.

Brownlows are a horrible metric to measure on. He was CLEARLY the best player in the comp when Wines won his.
It's still EJ.

Bont is the best midfielder in the comp when he's on fire, but EJ was the best everything in the comp at his peak.

Bont has too much impact on games to win a brownlow

Another All-Australian year off 18 games, 2nd greatest Bulldog in the 150th year voting, four-year contract extension, opened a milk bar. He's doing ok I reckon.

7x All Australian
6x Club Best & Fairest

He probably needs to have more impact consistently in Finals matches. Thats when it matters most. He's not bad in Finals overall, but not super in Finals either. I have him behind: Ablett Jnr, Judd, Martin, Franklin and Dangerfield.

Super career though. Great player.

Would've been great to see him at a club that regularly plays in big finals over the past decade. Besides the Perth Cup in 2021 there hasn't been that much lately for poor old Bont. During his long AA run he's had a few big finals performances and a few fizzers, without a super catalogue on that stage.

Yep and thats what separates the very very best from the best....Finals matches. That's what players play for - Finals footy...when it truly matters most, when the expectation rises, when the level goes up, when the pressure goes through the roof. Home & Away footy can't replicate it. Home & Away footy the good teams play the bad teams, Finals footy only the good teams play each other. Its open slather and its the truest test.

Well that’s just heartwarming innit.

Then he turned into a hipster franchise prospect
