The Hottest Celeb for me is......

Holly Valance is the hottest Australian to ever walk in front of a Television camera! Thats all I have to say!

Go The Pies!

Dan

Go The richo!

UNLEASH THE VL TURBO!

I'm surprised that no one's mentioned the most obvious Aussie-born celebrity in my memory... Mel Gibson.

I actually met Mel, believe it or not, at a get-together in Malibu several years ago. I was there with a media colleague from Southern California, and it was for a local community theatre group that Mel happens to have a minor creative and financial interest in, according to the rumours, and he preferred to blend into the background there, at this one premiere, preferring to be in the company of his wife and kids instead.

I admired Mel as an actor long before that and ever since, certainly-- and I gained an even greater respect for the guy from then on as a regular guy.

But if Mel's too global of an Aussie celebrity for some of you, I completely understand. Here are some others I've come to admire in my relatively short time in this country to date, in the form of a shortlist...

Eric Bana (comes off as completely likeable)
Eddie McGuire (driven beyond words)
Gary Phillips (Olympic Sharks NSL coach... more of a professional admiration for me, he's a good soccer tactician, and always good for a quote, makes my job as a journalist a lot easier) :D
Julie Murray (former Matildas captain, and more of a personal/professional contact since she finished her soccer career with the San Jose CyberRays... plus she was at mine and Jen's wedding) :)
Sam Newman (entertainlingly unpredictable!)

That's all I can think of, off the top of my head. Maybe more later...

Cheers,
William

Mel was born in New York.

Then how come the popular legend has him being born here? Interesting... although I have been known to make the rare error in judgment.

Nonetheless, my story holds true, about the Malibu meeting. And my wife says that even if he was born in NY, he is Australian.

Cheers,
William

He was definately born in the US. He moved to Sydney when he was 12, studied at NIDA, cut his teeth with Mad Max, and then fcuked off.

Unfortunatley wrong again. I have seen Mel in an interview where he claims that he is an American. I was quite disappointed. The American media always refer to him as an Aussie, but if he feels like an American and has an American passport, then he is American.

What he is though, is Aussie produced talent. Learnt to act in Oz and became famous in Oz.

Same as me, huh? ;)

I have to admit, though, I feel more Australian every day, having married an Australian woman here and now living here as a permanent resident. Yet I'll say that being an American is more than a state of mind, it's rather something I'll never surrender. No reason I can't feel both kinds of emotional attachments.

And in Mel's case, if he spent a significant chunk of his life here, being even partially Australian is something that will never escape his psyche, either.

...before he became a worldwide household name, that is, right?

I feel validated now. :D

Thanks for all of your insights, BB. Much appreciated...

William

How the hell is Greg Norman 'as Aussie as it gets'? The only time he's here is to check out his new 60 metre cruiser, otherwise he's found at 'home' in Florida.
He even sounds like an American now..........chokes like one too.

That is a COMPLETELY different thread! :)

By the way, there is a 'home video' going around of her. I don't know if you've seen that...

I've seen it but have been told it is a fraud and the actual 'talent' featured in the clip is actually an American who goes by the name of "Wifey".
