Collingwood.

The Dogs have an underrated backline but Collingwood would have to have the best defence in the league. Second least conceded points all year and they don't employ St.Kilda's flood tactic.

While the Dogs beat them in some areas (Lake being a better overall defender than Presti), Maxwell's a good third man up, Shaw's a gun running defender and Harry'O is a lot better than people give credit for, should have been AA last year (at least in the squad, ahead of Goodwin).

B: Toovey Presti Goldsack
HB: Shaw O'brien Maxwell

Can i get an idea on what a Bulldog fan would have as their best 6?

Close, both are superb... but I'd probably give us the nod for this.

Dogs probably have a better forward line off the top of my head, and a better midfield as per the other thread, and their defense is arguably better. Yet somehow I think - as a team - we're almost on par with them. Although I do think the Dogs will win the flag.

pies are too dependent on presti. he goes down and they are void of quality, genuine kpd

And what happens if Lake or Scarlett go down?

Top-tier full-backs aren't common, they're not easy to replace. Presti, Lake and Scarlett are why those three respective defenses are among the top 4 in the league, St.Kilda is more of a style and tactics basis.

Our backline is far better when looked at holistically than on paper. I'm sure it's true of most clubs, but I think our defense is probably the most cohesive defensive unit in the league.

B: Morris Lake Harbrow
HB: Hargrave Williams Gilbee
Who did you vote?

Once again, these 2 teams are hard to split.

i voted collingwood, only cos they are probaly the best back 6 in the league that work together, most teams flood and get there onballers to get back there and help eg: ablett on the last line of defence waiting to get the easy touch.

no? not quality or not kpd?

It's tough to decipher your nicknames, but I'm gathering you're referring to Thornton, Jamison and Bower.

They're all KPDs, in size, yes. The latter two are certainly quality, but nowhere near the level of Presti [not that you suggested such]. Thornton on the other hand, I don't think is quality. Good player, nothing more.

I think Reid will surprise many this year. He will cement CHB in our line-up. You're right that we don't have extensive KPD depth, as most clubs certainly don't, but the way our defense works, it's not a large issue. Losing Presti would be terrible, but we could work around it. Nathan Brown certainly isn't as good, but he is a good player and an obvious KPD, and the likes of Maxwell, Goldsack and O'Brien can all play tall if necessary. Not key defenders as such [except for Maxy] but they are flexible.

Dogs but probably because I go for them I think the Dogs have more attacking style defenders with Harbrow, Gilbee, Lake & Hargrave all more than capable (I've seen Tommy Williams do this a bit too during the NAB Cup which was a great sign) Collingwood do have a good defense and just got me thinking comparing the 2.

Our backup defenders are: Addison, Callan, Everitt (though i prefer him forward or on the wing), Markovic (though doubt he'd get a game this season), Picken can go back, Roughhead who will play this season can also go back & Tiller.

Out of those the first three mentioned would go straight in to replace one, Addison probably being the best though he is still a little inexperienced but a decent player nonetheless.

Our rebound is excellent too, Heath Shaw is probably the best rebounding defender in the league [in my opinion]. Maxwell and O'Brien also provide stacks of rebound, and this year we'll see Wellingham play that role. Toovey also provides some run, but not the disposal. The beauty of Lake is that he is a fantastic stopper and provides rebound, much like Scarlett, whereas both Brown and Presti are almost exclusively stoppers.

I'd probably say your rebound is better. :thumbsu:

We too have good attacking defenders- Shaw and O'Brien, O'Brien plays with fire sometimes but mostly gets away with it. and Shaw is a great rebounding defender also.

Other defenders we have is ben reid-who i think might find CHB permanent this year
nathan brown- still only young but can improve alot, kept J.Brown goalless IIRC.

Sharrod Wellingham- gets the job done, never gets enough oppurtunity hope this is his breakout year.

leigh brown- Highly underrated for his ability, can play all over the ground and whatever MM tells him to do, he'll do it.

brent macaffer can play defence and a bi up forward hopefully gets more of a go this season, good player.

simon buckley- havent seen much of him but im sure he will get a gig down there aswell as tagging through the middle.

It's nice to have a civilized conversation about each others teams and not resort to a sledging match and calling every player under the sun a spud... I've been hanging around Bay 13 too much haha but kudos to you Pies supporters up for a bit of chat about the two teams respective defenses it's been interesting. Hope it keeps up. Looking forward to round 1 too should be a belter.

i can only assume skippy reid has improved out-of-sight. last few times i saw him play he was terrible. very skinny too. i'd like to see how his body is now. thought he was a forward anyways.
MM made him play in defence in the vfl last year. i see what he is doing ;)

Yeah he has. He showed some good signs as a forward [apart from his goal kicking, and that run-up], very mobile and not a bad mark. But since he was moved to CHB in the VFL he improved out of sight. Came second in the VFL B&F from memory, racked up the touches and usually beat his opponent. Is up to almost 100kg too I think!. Still has a ways to go, given he hasn't even be tested at CHB at AFL level, but the signs are promising.

And yes it is good to have a reasonable discussion, generally the Polls board is the little-brother of Bay 13...
