I voted for Carlton Vs Collingwood, wasn't far off from voting Carlton Vs Essendon though.

I'd say Richmonds biggest rival is Carlton, but that game isn't as big as a Carlton Vs Collingwood, Carlton Vs Essendon or a Collingwood Vs Essendon.

It doesn't matter which is the biggest. All I know is, the next grand final between any of these 4 is going to be huge! Hurry up and get better Richmond!

Carlton and Essendon seem like they will be challenging at the same time in about 2 years. Richmond seem to be getting there as well if they can keep it up. If Collingwood don't slide, they will be thereabouts.

Melbourne will be in meltdown

mate, Carlton will be challenging this year most likely. We are still a couple of years away.

Unfortunately, Richmond are no longer part of that big four, that was alive 20 years ago.

The first two are the biggest, probably in that order at the moment.

If Carlton or Essendon win a flag/s in the next couple of years with Collingwood sliding, the second option may overtake the Carl v Coll

Yes but in a couple of years, when we are challenging (hopefully), Carlton would also be a contender I would think. Didn't say we were challenging at the same time as them as they are a few years ahead of us

Can see the Essendon vs Richmond rivalry grow in the future with the Dreamtime game becoming a bigger fixture on the AFL calendar.

I find it hard to take Richmond seriously as a "big 4" club, due to their poor on field performance. I've been following footy since the inception of the AFL in 1990, with the first game I remember watching being the 89 grand final as a 5 year old in Geelong.

It is hard for anyone my age or younger to really appreciate Richmond as a powerhouse. Hawthorn for me was always one of the big 4 clubs, and whilst through the majority of their successful period I never watched them, I remember the talk for years about how good and dominant Hawthorn were.

I have no doubt that back in the day, Richmond was in the top 4 biggest clubs in the VFL. Without getting into an argument of the validity of the "big 4", the long standing notion that it is no longer applicable, nor relevant due to the AFL being a national competition IMO stands true.

If membership and amount of supporters tumps then Hawthorn and West Coast are up there, especially the latter due to having the majority of a state behind them. Adelaide, whilst not having as many members as say the Eagles, also have a whole state except for a few Port supporters behind them too.

As for this poll, I voted Carlton v Essesndon. Purely for numbers, Collingwood and Carlton over the journey probably rule, but Carlton v Essendon has always been massive, with the hatred that ensues, as well as the even 15 Premiership tally in the VFL, and 1-all since the inception of the AFL.

Collingwood, Essendon, Richmond and Carlton have the most fans in Victoria and that is why they are/were considered big 4..

When playing each other the crowds are always good and rise when the teams are playing good football..

Any of these teams can be the 'biggest club in the league' when they are doing good.

Richmond have a massive following. Whether you like it or not they will always be one of the biggest clubs in Victoria.

It's no sweat off my sack mate! I was purely making an observation, I wasn't stating anything with an agenda, as I do not have one. The tone of the bolded part sounds a touch defensive, but that's probably understandable given fragility of your club for the last 30 years on the field.

Now answer me this question: Why do you think Richmond still play Geelong at Kardinia Park when clubs like St Kilda don't even play Geelong there anymore? Surely it isn't just because Richmond have been poor on field? If they have a lot more supporters and members than St Kilda, surely they'd be playing against Geelong at Etihad before St Kilda? Either a well performing St Kilda can get more peak supporters to attend games than an under performing Richmond, or the AFL just don't take Richmond seriously in any capacity. This isn't a troll, it's a serious question.

I lol'd.

I can't take you seriously after that line. Sig worthy.

Stats show that even the worst performing Richmond side get more supporters to a game than St Kilda. It wasn't a statement of fact clearly, but if that's how you read it, feel free to quote it in your signature without any context if you like, but the joke will be on you if you do. The comment was a touch facetious, but the question wasn't. So I guess the AFL just don't take Richmond seriously anymore, and certainly don't view them as a big 4 club in Victoria, if they still make them play at KP when other Victorian clubs with less supporters and members don't play there anymore.

Before you go getting all defensive again, please understand that I am purely and simply putting the question out there based on my interpretation of the observable facts at hand. If you dislike the facts, or have reason to dispute them as being factual, I would love to hear what you have to say. But just respond with facts only to directly counter the statements being made. Evasive, defensive, illogical, emotional or off topic drivel will not be taken seriously.

The current generation under estimate just how big Richmond is as a club.

Despite 30 years of onfield incompetence they are clearly the 4th biggest drawing Vic club.

With a little bit of success they are the equal of Carlton and Essendon. Collingwood does sit above the other 3 in terms of support.

Geelong is also clearly the 5th biggest Vic club.

In terms of support the Hawks have risen to 6th. Off field they are strong however this is on the back of government subsidies.

Historically Collingwood v Carlton has been seen as the biggest of the 'big four' clashes. Gotta say, though, that there seems to be more heat to the Essendon v Carlton clashes over the last 10 to 15 years.

You will all change your minds once the Tigers are back up there.

I will change my mind once Richmond stop playing at Kardinia Park. It has been said that Geelong only play interstate and minnow Victorian clubs there and that's why we've had such a good record. I'm aware that big doesn't equal successful, but even St.Kilda haven't played Geelong at Kardina Park for some 10 odd years or so now, and you couldn't argue that they have been either unless you consider actually making the finals a success.

Yeah ok.. Your a Geelong fan. Not Big 4.

Keep on regurgitating the same crap as that one trick pony in your avatar and avoid addressing the hard questions.:thumbsu:

One trick pony? Hahahahahaha.

What an idiotic comment.

Our club is bigger and better than yours and I understand your jealousy.

Yes, I'm sure Geelong are extremely jealous of Richmond.

The Geelong supporter in question is jealous of Richmond and our big supporter base.. Has a bone to pick every week in this thread..

I am jealous of Geelong's recent success.

I think that Anzac day has led to greater respec between collingwood and Essendon. collingwood certainly hates carlton the most, although apparently this isn't reciprocated. When was the last time collingwood and Carlton actually met in a game that really mattered or a final?
