Opinion Who was the original Woof?

Yeah people think it started with Val Perovic at Carlton, but it actually goes back a lot further and elsewhere.

Round 5, 1923. Collingwood vs Richmond at Victoria Park. In the 2nd half, a "black dog rushed into the arena". It ran past Richmond (and former South Fremantle) player Norman McIntosh who chased it and "brutally kicked it". The dog "curled up and crawled to the fence", then died soon afterwards.

McIntosh was fined £2 for his act of animal cruelty and, whenever he kicked the football during the remainder of his 78-game VFL career (he played until the end of 1924), the crowd would reference the incident by hollering "woof!"
