As you all know Truck isn't going to be around next year so who do you think will take Full Back next year and beyond? Kyle Hartigan? Andy Otten? Luke Thompson? Siggins?
Discuss.......

On our list right now? Hartigan's the only one who can play fullback, IMO. I know tons of people are deadset against Hartigan due to his skill errors, but I think his defensive potential and strength overhead put him in front of the others. I think his errors are due to his inexperience and nerves at the beginning of games, so hopefully he can improve in this area, because he really, really needs to.

Otten and Thompson ideally would take the third tall, though Thompson hasn't really had a chance to show he can play on a KPF. Also, while Otten performed admirably Jon Patton last weekend, there's a huge difference between Patton and a genuine power forward.

Siggins is still a year away at least, doesn't look (at this point) like becoming an genuine AFL level player, and wouldn't be a KPD anyway.

Given the strength of the key position players in this draft, if Pickett was snapped up by West Coast I think it would be best if we took a KPD. Hopefully Durdin drops a bit and we can grab him.

It would be great if Goddard slips to our pick

The only one on our list with a rig that's even slightly comparible to Truck is Hartigan. He gets treated pretty harshly by some around here, but I think he'll turn into a pretty good replacement given some experience. Otten did quite well on Patton, but Patton is still pretty raw. In a few years time, someone like that will rag doll Otten.

I've still got plenty of time for Hartigan. I've pumped him up plenty of times before but one thing I'll add that impresses me was his resolve in the games he played - often he stunk it up early (no surprise really for the 8(?) game veteran) but in each game he came back hard and really won the battle against his opponent for the next three quarters each time.

at the moment he's got everything I could hope for minus his deer-in-headlights moments. Give him more opportunities and he'll settle at the highest level. What did Truck just say in his retirement press conference? Something about Craigy playing him at full-back, getting towelled up in the first quarter, and then expecting to get dragged? We all know how that story is ending.

Hartigan got out marked badly on Friday night. Didnt show alot at the SANFL level.

Awful conditions, and has for the most part deviated between solid and good at SANFL level. One poor game in terrible conditions doesn't mean a whole lot.

Hartigan defensively has shown quite a bit for a player with less than 10 games. In that area he is the best replacement. Still big questions over his disposal. He should get more opportunity to prove himself.

Other than that we don't have anyone imo. Otten did well against Patton, but imagine going against a more seasoned player like Hawkins if he had to.

Probably Hartigan. I really thought Luke Thompson was stiff to be dropped for GWS. Thought he was excellent against Port.

To be honest, I am not sure we have a replacement yet. I think it will be rotation based system based on the opposition set up. Rutten isn't playing every match as it is. In fact I think our defence works better when Rutten isn't in the side because Rutten is inflexible and must play from the square which means he always gets caught out on the lead. When we have a faster player in the side we forced the leading players out to the pockets and was able to double team them better. I can only assume Rutten is going to be selected to play in games where the opposition has a big bodied forward.

If I was to pick a player who can take over a Rutten style opponent I suggest it would be Hartigan. Maybe another preseason in the Gym will get him up another level.

That's the setup.

Talia is already our full back, it's who becomes our second KPD that is the issue.

I was replying to the OP though...

Agree with Hartigan being an adequate replacement defensively, but boy does his disposal let him down. As far as I'm aware, the club thinks he's probably ever only going to be a backup so they'd be hard at work finding an adequate replacement...likely through trade/state league.

Phil Davis minus his exorbitant contract.

Unless we trade in an experienced defender then it's A Otten for mine to take the second tall forward.

192 and 90 to Talia 195 and 95. Not a massive difference.

But the key stat for him is 75 games - just now coming into that experienced player bracket - showed he can do it with good jobs on Westhoff and again v GWS

It will be up to Talia, Otten and Brown to anchor the defence and lead the way for players such as Hartigan who is still so green.

I loved Otten up forward but as the cards have falled I think his future with us for the time being is to partner Talia.

Talia already takes the biggest baddest forward and has already taken Rutten's normal role. Rutten has been matching up on the 2nd or 3rd big forward or playing loose.

My preference.

Talia, Otten, Henderson, Brown, Jaensch (for his run, not defensive prowess) and then rotating whomever through. If it's a big forward structure bring in another big, eg. LT, Siggins, Hartigan. If it's a smaller team rotate a midfielder through, eg. Smith.

This gives flexibility with defense and speed.

Otten surprisingly has been playing pretty well on some good forwards, would consider him for CHB.

I think it is alot easier being a backman in terrible conditions than a forward. Maybe he can come out when its dry and sunny.

Excellent post for somebody who is meant to be clueless ;)

If Otten can get his run back, he could be a premier CHB... If.

Horses for courses, depending on the opposition.

Talia moves to FB.
Otten CHB where opposition is not a gorilla.

Hartigan plays CHB where the opposition have a taller forward line, but otherwise I reckon we are better playing extra mids/smalls like Hendo, VB, Brown, Laird, MJ - for the extra run.

Also, Otten plays stronger than his size - rarely gets out bodied... & most importantly is a smart footballer, which you need at CHB.

Otten is already a first choice player. So surely we are looking for someone outside the 22 to take that spot?

Hartigan has shown that the defensive aspects of his game are already at AFL standard.
What hurts him is his decision making and disposal with Ball in hand.
He isnt going to improve that playing in the SANFL.
Work with what we have, pick the bloke we know can shut down the opposing big, and with more game time comes more experience.

More the point people are making (and why i voted otten) is that without Truck our best option may be to restructure. Otten is currently the 3rd tall defender/swingman. While bringing in Hartigan/traded player would keep it that way, bringing in any other option we have would see him move up to 2nd KPD.

Then it is a matter of it it is a Luke Thompson/Sam Shaw/Reilly as the 3rd tall, the more mobile Hendo as 3rd tall/rebounder, or a genuine smaller player adding to the rebound.

Depends on match ups, but since many criticise our defines for lack of speed, id go with Talia/Otten then the extra mobility stated above unless we really needed the extra tall

Hartigan 1 month young than Talia, yet there is daylight between the two at the current period.

Think the ship has sailed on Hartigan, hope I am wrong.

Go after Frawley in free-agency, don't pay overs, draft a KPP if it falls through
