A couple of days ago, as a consequence of some discussion about a possible trade involving St Kilda, Geelong, and Jack Steven, I found myself looking into the Cam McCarthy trade from 2016 and wondering in hindsight how one would rate it.

I'll state up front that as a Saints supporter, I have no dog in this fight, but I'm sure that many do. I'm not so interested in your views on Jack Steven, St Kilda or Geelong, but very interested on your learned opinions on the ultimate winners and losers of the trade described below.

(Obviously, had different clubs had the following picks they might have made different choices, which then would have effected any subsequent choices, but just as a brut starting point for comparison, please indulge me.)

As far as I can gather these seem to be the facts, don't hesitate to correct me where necessary, and I'll amend the OP:

McLuggage and Berry make Brisbane the winners so far

Tarranto is an under rated gem also, great player

Logue and Darcy yet to do much at Freo, could still be a win there. McCarthy is trash and will lucky to still be on their list end of next year.

He will probably start kicking goals now that Ross is gone.

Hogan averaged 2 goals a game pretty much every year he was at melbourne and then really struggled to kick goals under Ross.

Mccarthy also thrives when getting the second or third best backman, so if Hogan and Lobb have a solid 2020, id expect Mccarthy to also play well.

Thing is that Freo we’re willing to spend big on him the year before but GWS wouldn’t do the trade. Could have extracted a lot more for him.

That said, GWS did well netting Taranto in the end.
That's sort of what got me started thinking about it. Some fellow Saints fans on our board talking about holding Steven to his contract should Geelong not be willing to pay up a fair price, which might mean he takes the year off in his hometown like McCarthy did
