Opinion Why do Hawthorn supporters hate Geelong so much?

My opinion of their supporters is still pretty low. It's impossible to convince them that kicking 1 goal after half time doesn't really make you a worthy grand final winner.

in their defence, if the siren had gone with us 6 points down in '11, we would be very hard to console re wellinghams poster/goal.

i personally think the hawkins mistake, while a terrible one, had a negligible influence on the result, but from their position... ouch.

I know what you mean. I'm half-caste and whilst I love watching Australia win. I have a soft spot for le poms.

yeah, im a dual citizen, parents both from england, spent my early years there after being born in another place still, grew up here...

alec stewart was my favourite player as a kid. had an ashes card game, involved dice and the like. i HAD to be england as a kid, and it grew from there. i dont feel particularly patriotic either way, its not like that. just like them.

cook is a gun. what he did here '10/'11 was great fun to watch!

EDIT: After reading the latest installments by Hawks supporters on Chris Scott on the Main Board, I will never dislike Freo as much as Hawthorn.

i made this point to a very rabid anti-cat in shepp - if somehow every hawthorn player and geelong player swapped, they would back them to the hilt, and we would be talking about how courageous and wholesome hodge and guerra are.

I actually said something like this before wondering how we would respond to Buddy if he was a cat. Still its not really an argument you can put to most supporters. Foaming at the mouth would just be the start of it.

Your troll disarming technique works with guard dogs too. When car shopping on a Sunday some years ago I was walking past car yards that had big dogs behind a chain fence.
"What a good boy, aren't you sweet"
With a confused look the dogs stopped barking and whimpered a little

most are just bored people passing the time. ive had some very pleasant dealings with hawthorn bay 13 trolls 'behind the scenes'.

someone like HP, though... he seems to genuinely want to anger and upset people. he is antagonistic and belittling at every turn. he hasnt once dropped the facade. he is good at what he does, though, ill give him that.

i hope for his sake it is merely an online persona.

Go back to the 90s. Who were everyones "second team". Geelong and Fitzroy. Both losers, in their own special, unique ways during that era.

And they hate us now, because we're the exact opposite of that.

To be fair I think we have been a lot of people's second team recently just by the manner in which we play, it's exciting football.

They still hate us, but they enjoy watching...

very true.

no way would the hawks like guerra as much if he wasnt a hawk. its the nature of the game, though. he plays for them, hes a golden boy.

i like to think he would always remain a knob in my eyes, even if he played 5 seasons here.

same with puopolo - there is something very, very annoying about him.

With that in mind I realise I may never have hated St Kilda as much, or now Freo, if it wasn't for Ross Lyon
The most boring Geelong game I have watched in recent years was our snooze feast against St Kilda
They stopped being that boring once they changed coach, although they are less succesful (bore to win)
Freo is now taking on that style
Absolutely understand opposition supporters whe don't like us but love the way we play
I now don't like Freo and hate they way they play

I still hate them. They just can't get it into their thick skulls that they were in FRONT at 3/4 time, yet they still blame that umpire blunder.

Many other teams I hate more than Hawthorn (Drug Cheats, Filth, Carltank, West Coke - even the Shockers).

Cat supporters seem too proud of the 11 in a row achievement.

Don't get me wrong its been amazing to witness - but will count for nothing - and will in fact be the source of much embarrassment, if we dont beat them in the GF this year (assuming the two sides play)

Premierships are all that count. 2008 > 11 in a row. And lets not forget 1989 and countless other times they denied us in important games.

I have a hate/respect feeling towards the Hawks because of the knowledge they have been a tough opponent almost every time we've played them over the past 25 years. Hope the rivalry continues but with us finally getting them in a GF!

Hawthorn try to dismiss them losing to us as "the umpires screwed them over" or on the absence of non-entities like Rick Ladson and Stephen Gilliam (when he played with them). But there is a one real reason they hate us, and it is tied to the reason we beat them all the time.

GEELONG IS BETTER THAN HAWTHORN!

We are better than them, every day in every way.

Our players are better, our teamwork is better, our administration is better, our coach is better, our captain is better and our supporters are better.

Even our jumpers look better than there's.

Hawthorn have to contend with the fact that we are superior to them, and they hate it.

They hate us because they are our bitch!

Two games really
THere was one that was horrible mid 2010 were both teams couldn't score and we lost badly
The other was at the start of the 2011 season, 1 point win to us but the game was not enjoyable to watch even if the result was the right one

I really think we shouldn't confuse hawthorn supporters with bigfooty hawthorn supporters.
They have a few of morons who post regularly about the cats-i'm not sure what drives them and i have occasionally engaged them but most hawks supporters i know personally have lost their arrogance from the 80's and they appreciate Geelongs recent run
