Why does Adelaide get such a bad wrap?

I certainly would not agree with any suggestion about developing the parklands. For one thing, cities need green space. The fact that Adelaide has it is one of its great attractions to me.

Although I love many of Melbourne's inner suburbs, I would be unlikely to live in one as they are just too much concrete. In summer it becomes stifling. I would hate it if Adelaide went down that path.

I have nothing against the Parklands per se, there are just vast tracks of it that are unused and uninviting and that nobody ever ****ing uses. The area that shits me the most is the vast space between Sir Lewis Cohen Drive and Goodwood Road. It is just scrubland that is only ventured into by people car parking during show week. This is prime real estate in the middle of a city which is not used at all. For people to use the Parklands, they have to be inviting and there needs to be a lot more people living in the CBD otherwise they will remain totally underutilised.

Thats it. We need to look at Melbourne as an example

I would rather have a few acres of beautifully landscaped, usable open space with high levels of quality infrastructure then acre after acre of dusty, useless, boring scrubland.

There's a bakery across the road from the IGA in Strathalbyn that not only has the best pasties ever, but also make a chocolate donut i'd nearly consider having sex with.
MMMM....sounds like Homer heaven !!
Strath was a good place for food but you could eat you way down the main street in Hahndorf

Yeah I don't subscribe to this either. I don't really understand how the parklands can stifle growth?
You don't see how a ring of land which can not be build on, which totally encloses the city, and limits the area which defines the city centre to exactly 1 square mile, forever, is limiting or stifling. Make no mistake, it is part of the reason Adelaide, which even back in 1996 was on par with Brisbane and Perth for population, but since has fallen right behind, becoming the poor relation no one gives a shit about.

No I do not see how it stifles growth. I think I explained pretty well why SA has become the shitty cousin to all the other states. It was purelly due to economic circumstances.

Most migrants in Australia move for economic reasons, thus our population growth was slowed. Also growth usually means developement and progress. Adelaide simply did not have that, thats changing now however.

To blame the parklands is rubbish. It has never stifled growth, and besides to build public infrastructure, its not as if we desperately need the land, there are still many low density building within the CBD itself.
You're welcome to that opinion, but I don't agree. There have been innumerable developments which have never made it off the drawing board over the years because of the noise the twits in the ACC and their constituency have made over developing pieces of the parklands. Charles Landry, ("English urban psychology expert", "Thinker in residence", 2003 - see link earlier in the thread), sums it up best.

"Light's vision was inspired and its beguiling combination of wide roads and parklands has helped define the State. But at the same time that vision has also given rise to a permanent state of argument about how and when South Australia should use its parklands. Arguments over Britannia roundabout, Victoria Park and the Adelaide Oval are only the most recent in a long line of debate."

And so what we have, many years on after a lot of these dead-end debates, is zero development in the lovely, beautiful, green, still untouched, still a waste of ****ing space, parklands. It seems others in this thread agree, but like I said, I'm not expecting you to subscribe.

Only in Adelaide could you be 5 mins from the CBD at night and feel like you're driving in the country.

guys, dont be too jealous over cities like Perth. Been there many times. Sure, nice river and lots of mining money builds you shiny little trains and gleaming buildings, but its one of the most blandest, sterile cities. Adelaide has far more soul, culture, pubs, better restuarants and cafes. Even Melbournians agree with me

Adelaide has produced some great talent Apart from the footy talent

World great cricketers Ian and Greg Chappell

Bands such as Cold Chisel Master Apprentices The Angels very successfull Australian Bands

Glen Berrigen a silver Medilast at the Olympics Glyniss Nunn A Gold Medilast Dean Lukin A Gold Medal

Greatest Horse trainer this Country maybe the world WILL EVER SEE Bart Cummings and Colin Hayes

Wimbledon Winner yeah i know Lleyton Crow Hewitt but a lot of great players did not win Wimbledon

Critically acclaimed actors Gary Sweet Peter O'Brien

International Successfull actor Anthony La Paglia

WE go alright here in sleepy hollow

well, thats 2 examples of the problem right there folks

the thing i do love about adelaide is always being able to get a park right out the front of the restaurant when you're out for a night time feed, or anywhere else you go out for that matter.

wasnt it referred to as "a-delayed" for a reason LOL?

anyway, its these differences that make returning to adelaide a joy - 2 weeks off feels like a month - i love it. :)

^was there anything actually stopping the plane from landing though (eg maybe personnel had left etc), or was it purely sent back because of being 1 minute late?

yeah thats about it sorry.

Then why do Perth and Tassie get wanked over (or at least escape the criticism)? I can't see their advantages over us

The other thing that dont help this state is the Nick X

Every time i hear this clown i cringe hope the interstate news services dont go with the South Australian MP line

C'mon you are talking about the original nanny state here in WA. No extended trading hours, no daylight saving, mickey mouse airport, the worst footy oval in the AFL and more rule bound than any other state. Lucky we've got a great river and beaches otherwise you'd want to be paid for living here.

Having said that, you do push us hard in places. Your airport is fairly average and I was astounded to be told I couldn't take my drink to my seat at the footy unless it had a cover on it. Presumable it's so you don't spill it on someone. As if that is going to work. Apparently it is only in the last few years you have been allowed to even take a drink to your seat at all so I was told?
