Why does Adelaide get such a bad wrap?

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

I saw a mate of mine who works at the airport and he said it was a hour late and was on the Screens for some time

Even though I don't know your mate or you (nice mullet by the way) I'd bet a carton that you're closer to the mark than our esteemed local media.

Finally someone who likes the Mullett :thumbsu:

He said if it was only a minute late the decision not to land would have been made when the plane was in final descent

Adelaide shouldn't be compared to Sydney or Melbourne...it will never stack up to those cities...living in the eastern states I find most people that bag Adelaide have never spent much time there or have friends there.

Adelaide is such a cruisy town, and quick frankly I wouldn't want uptight easterner ruining it.

Other things not mentioned:

- You can have friends that live anywhere in Adelaide can arrange to meet them anywhere in 15 minutes.
- Festivals like the Fringe and Womadelaide rock
- Food and produce is awesome and not over priced like over here
- Wine is some of the best in the world
- Adelaide Central Market
- Can always find a park
- Haigh's chocolate
- Beaches while not as nice as other states, they don't have as many huge ugly buildings nearby.

For me Brisbane and Perth rank as the worst cities. The beaches are great in Perth, but that's about it, Brisbane is just a stinky town, full of arrogant people, plus you still have to drive ages to get to a decent beach and you have traffic jams going to the airport at 6am, WTF!!!

Easteners just want everything dished up in front of them or blindingly obvious, they don't want to have to look for it.

It Lives on !! HAHAHA!!.... gee in the old days when you used to have the Vic park races on a Saturday The Magic Roundabout used to be a nightmare
At least Adelaide has not got the worst drivers, Perth wins that hands down by a country mile.

Come to Cairns, everyone is still pissed every morning on the way to work.

Is Harley pulling out Birdsey?

Maybe not totally but predictions are Mooringe Ave will be a very small concern.

Unless things pick up big time, all the Harley Dealerships are full and no one is buying them at the moment. The other problem is a lot of people are defaulting on their bike so not only are they trying to sell New bikes but slightly used ones.So when someone goes to buy a bike the options are a brand new one for 35000 or a slightly used one for 8-12000.

Dont think Mooringe Ave will shut but it could be a very small concern and its on a big piece of land which is owned by the Goverment so that might be their saviour as rates and electricity gas and so forth could end up being higher than profits.

However Harley shut one of their production lines in the States for Oct,Nov and Dec so in that time they may be looking else where and cause its winter over there now this is when things go quite here and since August they have only needed 850 wheels a day.So in order to keep as many jobs as possible they went to 9 day fortnights and 2 one week shut downs, that is before the winter [USA] quite period.

So the bottom line is IF sales pick up everything will be ok but untill that happens then the future aint flash

THIS SUMS IT UP

Third Quarter and Nine-Month Results
Net income for the third quarter was $26.5 million, compared to $166.5 million in the third quarter of 2008, on revenue of $1.12 billion, compared to $1.42 billion in the year-ago period. Diluted earnings per share were $0.11 for the third quarter of 2009 and $0.71 in the year-ago period.

Through nine months, Harley-Davidson, Inc. reported net income of $163.6 million, down 71.6 percent and diluted earnings per share of $0.70, down 71.4 percent from the year-ago period. Revenue through nine months was $3.57 billion, down 17.1 percent from the same period last year.

850 wheels a day, **** we were making more wheels than that a decade ago.

Who shut York or KC?

Does not seem that long ago it was around 1800 sometimes more and that 850 includes the ones they are behind on usual story the Chrome ones are the sticking point

KC shut where the sports models are done

PM me i have forgotten who you are when did you leave there

As one wise poster pointed out - corruption. The state is what,2 billion in debt over Workcover.Workcover board member starts a rehab company,Workcover board then puts a grinding halt on redemptions,so people stay in the system in a 'rehab churn'.Said rehab company rockets to number 1 or 2 on the list of rehab referrals from Workcover.Plenty of rehab to go around, because very few are receiving redemptions.License to print money for Workcover board members who make the policies to benefit their own private companies.Who pays for all these rehab contracts? The tax payer, hence a 2 billion dollar liability. Then there is the hundreds of millions of dollars Workcover lost gambling on the stock market.

Workcover board member happens to be an ALP donor and friend of Rann.

Solution? Bring in draconian Workcover laws to kick a few dozen (or even a few hundred) injured workers off the system, which somehow is supposed to claw back 2 billion dollars. That's discounting the fact that because of the new laws, disputes skyrocket and lawyers/doctors get yet more tax payer money.A year 3 maths student could see that even kicking a thousand workers off the system will not put a dent in a 2 billion dollar liability. It will however transfer many legitimate work injured people to the public health system.

It is:

a) A witch hunt to punish rorters by simply punishing every injured worker.Total war scorched earth policy.Stalin would be proud!
b) Making more money for lawyers, keeping in mind most of the people behind the legislation and politics are of course lawyers, and Adelaide being Adelaide, all move in the same circle. In the end,tax payers pay for this.
c) A license to print money for certain people that own rehab companies
d) Transferring massive amounts of money from tax payers to corporations like EML and certain corporate law firms by way of the Workcover tribunal. One firm had their contract increased to 20 odd million this year despite poorer results. How many workers could be redeemed out of the system with 20 million dollars?Given the tiny redemptions and function loss calculations under the new laws,i'm guessing hundreds and hundreds of workers. It could also pay for endless amounts of rehab for many workers.Yet we are to believe using new laws to bury a few rorters along with a heap of legitimately injured workers is going to win back 2 billion.

Nah,no corruption in SA, we don't need an independant corruption watchdog do we?

Then there is the one way freeway down south, pure genius.

The anzac highway/South road underpass, which slightly reduced South road congestion in the area, but simply transferred the anzac highway problem down to the marion road intersection.

Main north road being kept as 2 lanes all the way from Pooraka to Elizabeth, despite new housing estates going up EVERYWHERE out north and Main North Road remaining the only way to get to these new estates. The road has a 30 metre wide nature strip in the middle of it for most of the way from gepps cross to munno para.

South road.

Trams.

Parklands that turn brown in summer.

South road.

Football park.

Bike laws that eventually can and will be extended to anyone and everyone (except of course corrupt politicians and police). Give an inch they will take a mile.

South road.

Could go on forever.

I was in Townsville earlier this year for my brothers wedding.I felt like crying all the way back to Adelaide, did not want to leave QLD.

^^^^
I moved from Adelaide to Cairns 3 years ago.
Cairns has its own problems at the moment, particularly the boom/bust cycle we live in.
However, I just couldn't see myself moving back to Adelaide unless I was offered a big big shitload of money.
Love Adelaide, have family there, but it's just not the same anymore now Ive lived in the Tropics.

Serious question.

Why don't we have any cinemas in the city anymore?

Pretty poor given our population is over 1,000,000 people

The one on Hindley St, The Academy and The Hoyts just weren't doing business. People want a wide range to choose from and 2-3 cinemas aren't enough.

On another note we also can't have Arcades in town - theres some zoning law that forbids it.

No mainstream ... just Palace and Mercury ... probably to do with rent and or real estate costs ... everyone wants 'mega' cinema complexes so easier to put up and get car parking on site in the suburbs ...???

Parking at Marion is crazy now. I gave up the other day and just headed into the city. And they're adding another 100 shops or something, those assholes.

I'm down that way ... for movies we head to Mitcham now altho the parking there is limited, there are not as many shops (yet).

I can understand people wanting a wider range, however what would be better - 0 vs 1/2/3?

I know they weren't doing business, but in the CBD? I just cant get my head around it still.

People go to the CBD for leisure all the time. Cinemas = leisure. Surely at least one of them could've maintained business...

Either way, I feel a bit embarrassed that as a major city we can't sustain a cinema complex in the city.

Or you could feel proud that there is only art house cinemas in the CBD

The Wallis Cinemas at Hindmarsh Square were great 'back in the day'. Did they have to leave against their own will to make way for the new apartment block there or did they just decide to close down.

Not really surprising at all. Your eating venues are down Rundle St., your clubs are up the other end of the city. So cinemas were either near one or none if you wanted to do all 3.

Whether you want to bring out the stories of the 'old days' were you cycled on two broken legs, 30 km in the snow, backwards, to watch Port play, or go to the movies or not, IMO, the two words that describe society these days is 'Time Poor'. Places like Marion let people (especially if you are there with kids in tow) shop, eat and go to the movies without driving around multiple locations or hiking kms.

It's also one of the reasons why Crown / Southbank in Melbourne is so popular - general entertainment, clubs, shopping (high end), food and movies all close to each other. Having seen it work (and I don't think it's something that needs a population the size of Melbourne to work, I think it could work here), it's why I support the Libs entertainment complex / stadium, rather than just an upgraded AO with a few frilly bits stuck on.

As long as Adelaide (the city) remains a few bits of 'this and that' with no cohesion, it will remain the symbol of what's wrong with the state. It's ironic for a city so well laid out to get around for travelling through, that it's such a shocker for doing multiple activities within it.
