And it's not to be too negative because it is possible but there are still too many unknowns about our rate of improvement that are unanswered to be confident of playing finals this year.

Here are my top few:-

1. Many posters have linked the success of Vickery, Chappy and/or Griff the improvement of Dusty and the return of Foley and Grimes as being pivots to our success.
IMV, the balance of probability means that 1 or 2 might come off - more than likely we need all of this things to happen to play finals

2. The stuff that has hampered us in the past is still an obvious issue - our ball movement inside 50 still lacks system, purpose and impact. Our tackling is good but not yet elite and the last 6 picked would not play in any Top 8 side on a regular basis. It concerns me that White, Jackson, King, Nahas and even Vickery to some extent look like to be in our starting 22. Some of these are pretty solid citizens and Vickery shows promise but week in, week out there are too many in this cluster that go missing in the more important "8 point games"

3. It is a lot harder to win 12-13 games than it is to win 8-10 games. The rate on improvement to wins those extra games means that:-
- we have to learn winning games when we are "the scalp", sides like GC, Power, GWS etc will see us as the winnable game for them. I don't think we have created enough of an aura to break these sides early and put the foot on their throat. I remember the Bombers kicking 13 goals in the 1st qtr against the GC in their first year. We need to make emphatic statements like that against these sides every so often
- I'm not sure we are mature enough to consistently beat those sides around us in the ladder Kangas, Bombers, Saints, Dockers (in Melbourne), Crows, Blues and this year probably the Lions. Whether it is belief, talent or experience ( or all three) I just get the feeling we aren't quite there yet

Of course I am more than happy to be wrong but most of the hype this year is media related and that hype is largely built ln bullshit - apart from Chappy not one of our recycled players was a regretted loss from their clubs so it hardly makes for a vast improvement.

I think one more year of demonstrated improvement with furthe development from Batch, Dusty, Vlas, Ellis, Vickery (finger x'ed) along with a successful return from injury from Foley and Grimes - 2014 looks far more realistic for a genuine dip at finals.

What are your thoughts?

Dimma says we are ready...
We have recruited a good ruck man in Maric...
We have recruited a CHB in Chaplin to improve our defensive structures...
We have promoted two reasonable rookies in the Big O and Petterd...time will tell how good...and both can only add value to our playing depth...
We have Grimes and Foley to return from injury...both are quality...
Tucky is over his illness and is playing even better...thats a positive...
TV is returing from injury...again quality...
We have drafted Vlastuin....young gun in the making here...ready to go...
All our younger draft picks have gained experience...Ellis...Conca...even Batch...Martin is trimmed down and ready...
We have a possible brownlow winner playing and captaining us in Cotch...thats a big big plus..
Edwards...Morris...Grigg...Newman are solid contributers so are Kingy and Nahas...
We have a Coleman Medalist in Reiwoldt playing for us...
More help up forward in the 'form' of tough nut McGuane...
Rance was clunking defensive marks in the NAB and was looking more and more confident...
We have recruited a recent Premiership Coach in Choco to help our coaching staff and development in younger players...ie O'Hanlon...
We have the bestest club song...our increasing memberships hints we are ready...
We are locked in and ready to rumble...:thumbsu:...

We are gonna shit it in.

While I respect your opinion, I think you wrote it like someone with a hangover and everything seems negative the next morning!

1. We only need to improve a little bit on our close losses from last year. Remember we had a fairly shit draw last year and this year's is much easier. A lot of the problem last year is that we lost Grimes. Now he may or may not play many games this year but Chaplin is an adequate replacement. Cothcin and Martin (and Griffiths) will have better seasons this year. They are coming into the right age where they will be at the top of their game for the next 3-4 years. That's not wishful thinking, it's biology. It happens with all players. I don't care so much about Vickery or Foley; I think we will get the same output from them as last year, and that will be enough. Any more is just a bonus for us.

2. Inside 50 is going to be crap this year because of the game plan we use most of the time which is the 7-man backline. I know I keep harping on about this, but the benefit is the opposition will find it very hard to score against us. Exactly the same happened last year and we had the best end of year percentage in probably 10 years. We are stopping the opposition scoring! And remember we have a dual coleman medallist in the forward line. The shit inside 50's is the price we have to pay. This is why we will see a lot of shots from 50 by our midfielders and probably kick more points than goals every game. But also I expect us to outscore the opposition

I don't like the word elite, it is a stupid 2000's buzz word like 'leading'. How do you even quantify what 'elite tacking' is? Sorry, that point should not be directed at you. I just hate that stupid term when used in football.

3. We are on the 'up' for nothing else because our young crop of kids from when Hardwick started are starting to mature. And lucky for us, they are genuinely talented. The other teams around us that you mentioned are on the other side of the hill and getting worse for the same reasons. Yes, the losses to the shit teams were embarassing. But the worst loss for us last year was Rd 1. We improved in many ways last year and I expect us to continue to improve, and I expect us to shit on those crap plastic teams this time around.

I am expecting finals this year and a finish of 6-7. We are so success starved that we make finishing in the top 45% of the ladder seem like it is some sort of insurmountable obstacle. But teams like bloody North do it every second year. It's not that bloody hard really and i'm not worried at all. Especially because we have a good draw.

I think people are overestimating how hard it is to make finals. All you have to do is finish 8th, for christ's sake. Not THAT hard.

We nearly made is last year even after having lost to GC!

**** all this analysis, it all starts with a powerful win next Thursday against the campaigners!
We're becoming a genuinely good team now so watch us stomp out those tankers like a soggy ciggy!!

Oh yes, forgot to mention, we'll finish 6th, if not higher!

Alot of the posters on here are just scarred by the last 30 years of mediocrity, that it's easier to be confident of us not making the eight.
Punt Road is a different place now.
On field performance starts from the top.
We're gonna have a great season, even if we lose to the blues next Thursday.
Have a bit of faith.

Man I am scarred but hallelujah I believe CC.. Amen, Brother

Should have made the eight 2011--- Preperation for the Port game in Darwin and not playing Tuck costs us.
Should have made the eight 2012 - close loses costs us.

But those close losses are what will improve us overall..... A good run with injuries and we are a top 4 side. A bad run and we fall to 12th 14th.

Last night shows that Adelaides effots last season mean nothing this season.

Belief is undervalued.... something winning creates. Thursday night will be the start of that.

IMO if we beat Carlton on Thursday we'll play finals.

If not we won't. Simple really.

We need to kill the mental demons and then we could get 13-16 wins. The afl are also w***ers.. Could have at least given us Gws or even Melbourne twice.

Not the end of the world if we lose.

Not the end of the world if we lose.

We could win 3-5 games just by shaking off that mental demon that has possessed our players for so long

Our i50's is the key to us making the finals. If last night proved anything, just bombing long to crowded fwd lines just doesnt cut it. Quality v Quantity.

This year I believe we can kill off mental demons and make the finals.. hopefully we can beat teams like Carlton, Collingwood, Geelong and Gold Coast.

It's very possible if we continue in an upward trend like we have from previous years.

We beat both grand finalists last year convincingly, we lost a lot of close games, we still have a very young list, we have brought in a few experienced players to add to our depth and we have the coleman medallist, 2nd player in the brownlow and Luke McGun.

Finals are coming there are a lot teams pretending in the middle of the ladder, we are not one, we will only improve!

Doesn't help when players don't know how to lead

So that's two reasons for and one against.

Doesn't help when players don't want to lead

Fixed.
