If you read my OP, in essence my point is that I just think we are a season away. In fact, if we can snag 11 or 12 wins with some of those obvious improvements coming through - 2014 might be bigger jump than 7 or 8th.
Not sure how that translates to having to harden up?

I'm not sure it's overly negative, just calls out some of our obvious limitations.

Lets wait and see, rounds 1 and 2 will be a great test.

People seem to be acting like we need to improve dramatically to make finals. We don't. We need to improve only slightly and suddenly we're there. Finals aren't that hard to make, you've just got to be in the top 50% of the competition (ignoring GC and GWS at this point) to make it. If you're even slightly better than average, you're in. If we get all of the improvements listed in the OP (and yes, I do find this unlikely), we won't just be making finals, we'll be top 4.

Realistically I think we need to bottom out a couple more times so we can have an All-Australian candidate in every position on the ground. It's the only way we can ever hope to come 8th.

I like this, and would encourage you to nominate for the Board at the earliest opportunity.

We have recruited a CHB in Chaplin to improve our defensive structures...
We have promoted two reasonable rookies in the Big O and Petterd...time will tell how good...and both can only add value to our playing depth...

Tucky is over his illness and is playing even better...thats a positive...
TV is returing from injury...again quality...
We have drafted Vlastuin....young gun in the making here...ready to go...
All our younger draft picks have gained experience...Ellis...Conca...even Batch...Martin is trimmed down and ready...
We have a possible brownlow winner playing and captaining us in Cotch...thats a big big plus..
Edwards...Morris...Grigg...Newman are solid contributers so are Kingy and Nahas...

Rance was clunking defensive marks in the NAB and was looking more and more confident...

IMO if we beat Carlton on Thursday we'll play finals.

If not we won't. Simple really.

We need to kill the mental demons and then we could get 13-16 wins. The afl are also Moos.. Could have at least given us Gws or even Melbourne twice.

At least I'll know by 10.30 Thursday night whether I have to worry about attending any more games, given it's a case of lose and our season is over. Thanks for clearing it up.

Its not about Hardwick's coaching...its not about his individual performance...its not about his bag of tricks or even the rabbit that comes out of the hat..ta daa..
Its about getting the basics right at this basket case of a club...
Its about recruitment...players and staff and coaches...
Its about development of players...training and developing their skills...making them bigger and stronger...confident...
Its about development of club personnel at this club that will set it up for years to come to be able to compete regardless of who's coaching us...
Its about learning a game plan that can stand the heat in the kitchen...over and over again till its second nature for these up and coming players...
Talk to me about Dimma's coaching when we are playing in the Finals...the Grand final...

check our age this year

You will then see the reason we are unlikely to make it.

We should challenge but will fall short, next year however, we will be right in the zone.

I understand, you have a loser mentality. It's how you cope and can deal with disappointment easier.

If we miss out on the top 8, then this year is a fail.

If we finish 9th, you will be satisfied.

That is loser mentality.

- we have to learn winning games when we are "the scalp", sides like GC, Power, GWS etc will see us as the winnable game for them. I don't think we have created enough of an aura to break these sides early and put the foot on their throat. I remember the Bombers kicking 13 goals in the 1st qtr against the GC in their first year. We need to make emphatic statements like that against these sides every so often

Whether we make finals or not, I'm predicting that we will issue a fearful hiding to a side this season.

This is a "nervous nellie" thread.
We have rebuilt and now round one, the moment of truth, looms.
Typically, some need to reassure themselves that they can cope with disappointment of losing to Carlton (again) and face the jibes about the 'paper' tigers.
So they recount all the reasons why the season might go wrong.
Others, myself included, suck it in and just remember the roar of the Tiger fans when we hit the front in the last quarter of round one 2008.
It's time.
Time to fight and fight and win.

Been burnt too many times to make the bold statement that we'll play finals, and to be quite frank I'm worried that the log jam of teams may mean we will miss out on something like percentage. I just don't want the club to sack Hardwick if that happens.

I said it elsewhere and I'll say it again, we are good enough but whether we make it in 2013 is another story, too many variables which could go either way for us. But that's what makes footy so great!
