Please don't get me wrong. Knights is one of my very favourite players at the club. He's my genuine love child!!

BUT

We do need an A grade quality mid-fielder given the player retirements and the lack of drafting in this area in recent drafts.

Bock's departure has opened the door financially to do some trading for a gun, but you have to give quality to get quality, and that's where Knights comes in.

Rightly or wrongly, the word is that he's thinking about going home to Victoria.

Ryan Griffen should be the target that Adelaide pours everything at and Knights should be the bait that they use. Griffen's a gun, he's an Adelaide boy, and we should move heaven and earth to lure him home.

He's also uncontracted, as is Knights.

It's a matching trade, in that Griffen is exactly what we need, and with Johnson in his last season with the Bulldogs, Knights would be a perfect replacement for him.

With the emergence of Henderson and Jaensch as promising forwards this year in addition to quality forwards in Tippett, Walker, Porps and Dangerfield, we can afford to lose Knights out of the forward line as long as we replace him with a gun in the middle.

Ryan Griffen is that gun IMO.

Thoughts??

Agreed there would have to be some adjustment with draft picks.

It's more the principle I wanted discussed. i.e. trading Knights to get Griffen.

Do posters agree with that?

I do indeed

Fact is, you have to trade quality to get quality. We have players coming through who can play Knights role.

Put it out there and lets see what we get from the Doggies. Could be another win/ win for both clubs, much like the Stenglein trade

In principle I do.

I would like to be sure that Knights wants to go home however before consideration.

I would also argue the extent of the draft picks, don't get me wrong i'm not suggesting that it is a straight player swap but I would be suprised if the draft picks used have more than say 1 round involved

ie Knights + our 1st for Griffen and their 2nd seems more appropriate.

would be a worthwhile trade for both clubs, harper said on 5aa that he is worried about knights resigning, tho ni am not sure what this means

Henderson is playing the Knighta role and will only improve, and our midfield is lacking a graders besides vince and thompson and Griffen would improve us drastically.

Agree. I don't think Knights will re-sign. Let's use our Bock 1st rounder this year and pass it on to the Doggies with Knights. We can squabble over second and third round exchanges. With Thommo about to sign up and Sloane and Danger adding to the grunt, we need some serious outside class to drive us forward.

None of these teams got anywhere near the concessions that GC and GWS are getting.

That wasn’t the point you made. We didn’t have to give anything up to receive those players.

Keep it on topic. been done to death over a number of threats.

Can the concession pick even be traded? This year?

I love Chris Knights and what he brings to our club, but yes I agree he could be the one to go. Unfortunately his injuries is a massive concern and with Jaensch and Hendersen able to kick those long goals I agree the time is right to make a big play for griffen.

This isn't meant to under rate Griffen because he's a fantastic player, but questions have to be asked as to whether he'll be as good being clearly the best midfielder in the team, as opposed to having players with the class of Cooney, Boyd and Cross alongside him.

We would have to be supremely confident that he would still be as good if we were to give up something like Knights + 1st rounder. Remember that Daniel Kerr looked like a superstar before the departures of Judd and Cousins, although our current midfield is probably better than West Coast's in the post Judd/Cousins era.

So, looking at his would-be support act here - Thompson, Vince, Mackay is certainly no Cooney, Boyd, Cross, but there is improvement there, and Dangerfield/Sloane are waiting in the wings. On the assumption that all of these guys can step up to the next level, I'd have no regrets in giving up Knights if it means snaring Griffen. However, if we think that he can just come here carry our midfield then we'll get a rude shock.

Agree in principle.

Don't like Griffen, he's a nunce. But I agree with the principle of this thread.

IF he wants to go, well - he is quality, so should attract quality.

If the Knights / Griffen swap (+ or - whatever) can be done that would be fantastic.

Can the concession pick even be traded? This year?

If we elect to use the concession pick this year, which we can do, it would be at the END of round 1, not after our normal round 1 pick as it will be from 2012 on. That would make it something like a pick # (9+18 =) 27. That said, YES, it can be traded.

No, the concession pick can't be used until 2012 at the earliest. You have 5 years to use it from 2012 onwards and you have to make the decision about when you plan to use the pick at the start of the year.

Unless the AFL budge on some clubs wanting to trade future picks, which they have always said no to, to date.

I don't think Thompson, Vince and MacKay are that far behind Cross, Cooney and Boyd to be honest. None of them are "elite" kicks, really it's their ball-winning abilities that make them the players they are. We know Vince and Thompson aren't elite kicks either but they can find the pill too so I see no-reason why Griffen would struggle in our midfield.

As much as I like Knights, I think we can afford to lose him for someone like Griffen. We have a few players in the "Knights role" waiting in the wings and the WBD need someone to replace Brad Johnson so it's a win-win for both clubs. I would approve of the Knights + 1st rounder for Griffen if the Bulldogs agreed to it aswell:thumbsu:.
