We have seen how going back home can influence a player so much, as we have seen judd come back to melbourne, should we be worried in the future about gibbsy wanting to return bak 2 S.A?

Re: Gibbs to go back home

When home is Adelaide its not all that enticing.
lol. So true.
His dad did come out and say that his son only wanted to be a one club player and didn'y want to move clubs, and was loving it at Carlton.
Although having said that we did here similar stuff from Juddy, so it could (unfortunately) be possible.
But what you have to remember is that Melbourne is one hour from Adelaide by plane whereas Melbourne is about three from Perth.

I dont think that anything similar to what happened with Judd would happen at Carlton. We have already proven that we have a low tolerance for drug users and that, in a way, was why we now have Judd wearing the old dark navy blue :)

That being said, anything can happen in the future but I dont think that we will lose Gibbs.

Re: Gibbs to go back home

Think he will hang around for a few years yet. Too much opportunity at Carlton in the next 5 years to head back home again.

Re: Gibbs to go back home

One of the biggest bonuses in recruiting Judd is it helps to keep young players like Gibbs and Murph at the Blues. Also given his old man's relationship with Sticks I can't see him returning to S.A. in the near future.

Re: Gibbs to go back home

If he does a Judd and wins us a Premiership and goes home, would we really care? Would we kick up the stink that Eagles fans are making?

Re: Gibbs to go back home

"THE father of prospective No. 1 draft pick Bryce Gibbs says the star midfielder will remain a Carlton Blue for life.
Ross Gibbs, who played 253 games for Glenelg, has quashed speculation the 17-year-old could seek a return home after a few years in Victoria."

Re: Gibbs to go back home

There are a whole stack of factors involved in whether a player of his calibre wants to go home:

- Money. It made sense for Judd, the most marketable player in the competition, to be in a big market -Melbourne or Sydney. With salary caps in place, increased marketing is about the only way players can get more at a different club. About the only way Gibbs could be better positioned would be at Collingwood, but that move wouldn't happen

- Lifestyle. Is there something about Adelaide he would prefer to Melbourne? I doubt that - the cities are pretty similar in way of life. The fishbowl environment over there might not suit him as well - he seems pretty laid back

- Family/friends. A possibility. But then, his family have stayed close to him, and their association with the Kernahan's etc means they have always been aware, if not promoting, his move interstate. They don't seem to be pressuring him to come back, anyway.

- Bargaining power. Adelaide or Port would have to finish last to have any bargaining power. I can't see that happening- home ground advantage will see that they finish off the bottom, unless their team somehow becomes woeful

- Probability of success. Carlton are a big club, and on their way back up. Gibbs knows he just has to stick it out and he'll get there. And the Judd signing has to be a positive sign in that regard from Gibbs' point of view -it shows we are serious. Would he jump in the short term to a potential premier? Possibly, but if Adelaide or Port was in a position to win a premiership, they wouldn't be in a position to bargain.

In fact, that seems to be the decisive factor. Carlton won't give him up unless, as West Coast were this year, they have no choice. He won't leave to go back to an uncompetitive team after starting his career with one. But a competitive team won't be able to barter for him. Classic catch-22. Basically, he's not going anywhere

He mightn't want to go back to Adelaide he might want to stay in Victoria

Re: Gibbs to go back home

You really should change the thread title to a question as opposed to a statement:thumbsu:

Not a chance of Bryce leaving for a long while. Too many links to us, and he's already creamin that he gets to play with Judd.

Bryce and other young interstate guns were a major reason as to why we put people like Icke in his job. He's proven he can get and keep good kids together. I wouldn't think there would be too many players wanting out of the Blues for a while, until lack of opportunity keeps some back, and if thats how he leaves then he didn't live up to his potential!!

Re: Gibbs to go back home

I don't see why this 'home factor' is such a big deal.
A very large percentage of AFL players have to move interstate and change their lifestyle to play at the highest level. It is part of the game and they should accept it.
Just because Judd and one or two other players were traded to go home to their original state, doesn't mean that every star player will.
Why aren't we questioning if Buddy Franklin wants to go back to WA or Jonathon Brown wants to come home???
It's more just hype created by biased opposition supporters who would just want it to happen.

Re: Gibbs to go back home

Why would you leave a club on the rise for a club on the decline...???

Why would you leave Melbourne for Adelaide unless youre a pot smoker or a bikie???

Stupid thread, mods please delete!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Carlton are on the way up, yet Adelaide on the way down. I would also think that the "Judd factor" would have a massive bearing on quite a few of our kids staying at the club.

Scott welsh, Troy Bond, Ben Nelson, Kris massie...

Is the issue in the next year or so which youd say impossible to say but in 5 years time a la Judd?

Re: Gibbs to go back home

Carlton has a great record with keeping south australian champions at the club, i don't see this situation being any different. Gibbs a blue 4 life enough said..

Re: Gibbs to go back home

Not worried about Gibbs @ all.

Who I am worried about is Hampson maybe going back up to Qld if/when they start a 2nd team up there. Depending on how they try to man the squad, someone like Hanpson who is from Qld and a good up and coming/established ruckman would be very sought after, one way or another.

Just my thoughts.

Firslty, the go home factor is not so big when home isn't too far away.

Melb - Adelaide vs Melb - Perth are very different beasts.

Secondly, the "go home factor is overrated.

For every player tha goes you could find 10 that don't.

Thirdly, if Judd just arrived at your club, and you were right in the mix to be in a team on the rise, would you go back to the dump that is Adelaide to start over again? After all, the only way the Crows will get him is if the bottom out and finish last.

Why choose that vs a team on the up?

Also he said some stuff about wanting to be a one club player. I don't think he'll be going anywhere any time soon.

Re: Gibbs to go back home

Sammy Hamill is about the only decent player we have lost that we didn't want to lose at the time. Even through the rough times, which are hopefully now over, we have maintained who we want on our list or traded them on our terms. After Hamill, who is the next best we've lost without fair compensation? Troy Bond? An ageing Campo? Maybe i've missed one or more, but unlike Essendon, we don't lose good players. Gibbs will be in our 17th premiership team!
