Will the AFL ever move away from tradition? If Adelakde finished highest on the home and away ladder be it 1st or 3rd for example if one and two got knocked out. Wpuld they then get the right to host the Grand Final at Adelaide Oval?

Yep locked in at the G for a long time. I think though it would never move to a higher finishing team gets the home grand final. It would be decided a year out and if it was 2 neutrals you’d still fill the ground. They need to arrange a lot of things such as entertainment etc.

Entertainment is not needed. But as the day is about the corporate boxes selling at throusands of dollara a ticket, 500 a dollar an egg breakfasts, and football is just a sideline, I guess it is.

Ideally, go with the pre-GF bye and only know the venue two weeks out.
Always neutral. Twio Vic teams, MCG; two non-Vic MCG, Vic v non-Vic who are also non-WA play in Perth, Vic v WA its in Adelaide (given the Sydney Olympic stadium is a shithole for oval sports and won't be available anyway).

Yes, that means lower crowds many years, but so much is MCC members that the revenue wouldn't be that much lower in Perth. And it should be sport first, finances afterwards - its not like the AFL is in rugby's precarious position.

I'd much prefer the Grand Final to be played away from the MCG every second year, rotating it through other AFL states. It's going to a massive game and a sell out wherever it gets played.

It's a national sport so the ultimate prize should reflect that.

I’d be all for it moving around to pre determined venues on a roster personally but there are really only 2 venues up to scratch currently.

Really feel like you need 3-4 to make it viable, there’s a new stadium for the olympics soon in Brissy is there not?

I live in Adelaide and the Oval is a great venue but it’s not up to Grand Final imo, would need another stand on the hill but that would kill it’s charm.

You can’t play a granny at some grounds, you can argue fairness but Capitalism doesn’t care about your opinion.

I'd prefer the MCG for tradition. But it would would be fair to a side who finishes higher to host it. Unfair on non vic sides tbh. Even as a one off shoukd a side finish highest on the ladder, they get to host it. They get one shot each in their history whenever that is. One won't hurt.

Someone* once said that as a balance to MCG Grand Finals, all prelim finals that are not between two Vic teams should be played interstate.

I would almost accept that compromise.

*ok, it might have been me

I love the tradition of the MCG as the home of the Grand Final, I wouldn't want it anywhere else, it's our Wembley.

If interstate clubs are good enough they can win it there, 9 of 25 flags since 2000 have been won by interstate clubs.

Pretty good percentage of flags for the 8 interstate clubs when you consider that the Giants and Suns were understandably uncompetitive for a number of years after entering the competition.

That’s like saying “if Club x is good enough they can win with a guaranteed minimum 10 less free kicks”.
They might be able to, but why should they HAVE to?

It's definitely an advantage for MCG tenants (and other Victorian clubs, to a lesser extent). However, the idea of having football's marquee day, its greatest gladiatorial battle, away from the Colosseum of the MCG seems wrong. 2020 and 2021 seemed wrong, and the games were only moved out of desperation.

I think a new stadium should be built in Melbourne and the current MCG tenants then play most of their home games there.

The G then becomes a stadium reserved for big home and away games and finals.

A fanciful thought but that’s what I reckon would work.

God no.

As much as I hate the status quo as it gives Collingwood/Richmond/Melbourne/Hawthorn and arguably Essendon/Carlton an unfair advantage.

The idea of letting the higher ranked team host it actually annoys me more.

Think of pre game entertainment. They could be doing it as part of a tour, messes with the tour
Heck, think of all teams' fans. Think of Brisbane, they may have held in Melbourne accom a few weeks back, now they need Adelaide accom too? Logistical nightmare

Logistics are worse. And I also think it makes it harder. Should be neutral, and the MCG has a greater chance of giving us that.
What I actually like is reward the premier still, defending champion gets to host it. So what I'm saying is this year is at the Gabba.

Lets people know a year out where it is, while still giving it out as a rewards.

But you're not taking into account how many of those Grand Final victories by non-Victorian clubs have come against other non-Victorian clubs.

Since 2024 we've had 23 GFs at the MCG:

  • 6 between 2 Victorian teams
  • 4 between 2 non-Victorian teams
  • 13 between a Victorian and non-Victorian team
  • Victorian teams are leading those match-ups 8 to 5

I'm not sure why I bothered though, because I actually think the GF should stay at the MCG anyways haha.
