Not in 2011, but probably in 2012. Get 15-20 games into Menzel and co next year, develop an improved gameplan over the course of two preseasons... could be a much more energetic unit in 2012 than we were in 2010.

EDIT: Just saw those poll options. Need a fourth option for the above.

2011 and onwards.
Better than? Third in 2010?

No, we are going to have to get worse before we get better - Thompson or no Thompson. He was gone next year anyway.

I think Bomber leaving now is good news. His done a great job, but his era is tappering off. Why delay the inevitable one more year? Lets re-jig the game plan and environment with a new coach.

I voted undecided as the other options suggested we can win the flag in 2011 and I don't think we can.

I've got to say that I'm happy our list is so old now.
Stability from within the group will be hugely important next year.

Yeh it was hard to get the wording right in the poll space, and obviously there are lots of factors that are relevant.

Was more along the lines of, can we win in 2011 with or without Bomber, with focus on utilising our great list before a LOT of them start their downward spiral in terms of peak fitness and ability.

Only really focusing on 2011 at this stage.

We are certainly going to be better than if he stayed and didn't want to be here.

Yep.

And that's all that matters.

Same with Gaz or anyone else at the club for that matter. Sure, we don't want to lose our best player/s and staff, BUT we sure as hell don't want them if they don't want to bleed our club's colours anymore. From this perspective I have no doubt our club is better off losing these types as opposed to them being here just because their contract says they have to.

We have some great foundations in place now as a result of Thompson, Cook, Balme, Costa and co. We have a far better culture at the club than in the 90's and early 2000's. This may well be a case of one or two steps back to take two or three steps forward. No crisis. Interesting times for mine and I can't wait for 2011 to see what it brings.

I think yes.

One major criticisim of Bomber of late is that he appeared too soft to make the hard calls on some of the veterans/favourites, and that decision ultimately cost us another shot at the Grand Final.

A new coach, lets face it, either Sando or Hinkley, knows the club & gameplan but will make the hard calls and bring in some new blood around our core of 24 - 26 year old champions.

....it may even mean gaz stays.

If Bomber goes, say goodbye to what would have been a more than handy changeover period for Bomber and his protegé, most likely Sando.

If Bomber has lost his hunger than yes, we would be better if he leaves. But if he has any want for another flag in the near future, and is going to put 100% into next years run, I would want him to stay. At the very least to oversee the possible Sanderson transition. Bomber has been a massive part of our success in recent years and could only benefit the club by staying, but he needs to be behind it 100% otherwise he could become a liability in which case he should move on.

I think we will, as I said on these boards yesterday, we need to play some of our kids and have selection on merit not names and loyalty, and I think as I explained with Harley's comments about loyalty, Bomber would have struggled to do that whereas a new coach won't...so yes, I am very grateful for everything Bomber has done, but if he is to leave, this is probably the ideal time.

Pure_Ownage was onto something, it seems!

I am nostradamous!

To be honest I didn't think Bomber would leave before the end of 2011, I am as surprised as anyone...I just was asking the question.

Is that you, Harry?

From a neutral (with a soft spot for the Cats):

IF you think the Cats' window has closed for now, you will be much better off.

Even more so if Gaz leaves.

You'll have a new coach to build a new team and game plan.

You've got some good kids and a great leader in Selwood.

If Gaz leaves and maybe you trade a few 27/28 year olds you will have a stack of draft picks, some of which you may hold onto and you'll have a bumper draft or two.

Yes, if he is, as Cook just said, 'burnt out'. Bigger problem is why the hell didn't someone notice that he was 'burnt out', it doesn't just happen overnight or in this case in the one week since the preliminary final. Where was the club-CEO and Board on this. If this is the most critical position in the club then someone should have been watching and checking and noticed!
This may well have cost us a GF appearance and a premiership chance.

Couldn't have put it better myself.

The sky is not falling in, despite what some people think.

We just need to make some hard decisions, that's all, and if we do that we will be fine.

Are we going to be better off with or without Bomber?

I think yes.

Agree. Has done a magnificent job but seems to have been worked out to an extent. Has been with us for a very long time and was to leave at the end if next year anyhow. Get someone new in and give some of our younger players a go and it may reinvigorate the others enough that we could be a smokey for next year. Still a lot of quality players on our list that are in their prime.
