While I'm not at all displeased with our current captains, although im not big on having two, I can't help but think Nathan has missed out buy 12 months. From what I have read and what I have seen, he would make a top candidate. Neeld and Melbourne will stick with it's current captains IMO. Jones, however would be my first choice at this stage if Green had held the title until the end of 2012.

He seems to have taken a massive step in the last 12 months as a leader. Although the same could have been said about Moloney at the end of 2011. Look how that turned out.

So after 2012, I'm asking what other people think about our co-captain plan for the future.

Do you know the rationale for having co-captains? Do any other teams do this?
I think it is strange in this era, but Neeld has his reasons. It was the trend decades ago. I don't like Two captains, but that's my opinion. I don't think Trengove is captain material at this stage.

I am still learning about all this. Do you think Jack Grimes is captain material either? I agree that Jones is probably the choice for captain.

Oh ok gotcha. I am still learning! Do you think either Grimes or Trengove should be captain?

They wouldn't have been made co-captains if they shouldn't.

Yeah, Sydney have co captains and have perhaps the most admired team culture in the AFL.

It's not common but in our case I think it's pretty good considering we have 2 young guys in charge.

Personally I wasn't a fan but the idea has grown on me.

I have no doubt that Jack Grimes is the best candidate to lead us long term. He oozes leadership and he might be young but he is a mature guy with the right mind set.

I was lucky to meet both our captains and was very impressed by them, Grimes especially.

Trengove did have an what many consider an average year compared to our lofty expectations but he is more vocal than Grimes so Together the two young guys are close to a complete packages.

I also think Jack Trengove needs a little luck with injuries and he will be able to reach his potential really soon.

From the outside looking in I have no doubt that Jones would make a great captain but we have new processes at the club and I respect Neeld and co are making the correct decisions. From now on, Grimes and Trengove will only get better and better.

Interestingly from Jim Stynes' book it appears possible that such a decision of co-captains was more than a FD conception but it is hard to say how exactly the decision was forged.

On page 324 of his book Jim wrote about a particular chat he had with Gary Lyon about all things FD and MFC (Neeld, Craig etc) after those appointments.

This stood out to me a little:

He also canvassed my opinion about appointing co-captains.

It may simply have been a case that Neeld put it on the agenda and Jim's reaction to it was similar to Gary's rather than it being Jim's actual idea but it's a curious comment none the less.

In any case, I believe Mark Neeld when he said that he couldn't seperate the two young footballers and I believe the ultimate decision was his. Grimes has "captain" written all over him and Trengove obviously has many qualities that good captains require.

Too much pressure on Trengove, IMO. Reckon Grimes should be sole captain.

In a perfect world I would have either Jones or Grimes or both. No knock on Trengove at all, or the decision, but dealing with all the shit 2012 dished out would take its toll on anyone, let alone such a young player.

Speaking of Jonesy...

AFL: Melbourne midfield confidence grows

NATHAN Jones says the additions to Melbourne's midfield group could not have been more impressive in the period before Christmas but they can't be expected to "carry the brunt of the load" in 2013.

The Demons recruited Jimmy Toumpas with pick No.4, used pick No.27 to acquire father-son recruit Jack Viney and added the mature aged Matt Jones and youngster Dean Kent with later selections to bolster its midfield...

Grimes... Grimes... Grimes...

Too much for Trengove, he handled it well, but his footy was pretty average. Grimes is a natural born leader and can play with the pressure.

You know what, I think Trengove's less than stellar year had more to do that he looked to be either carrying an injury, or struggling with the increased training load. His best is still the best of any of our midfielders.

But forgetting form, Neeld made it pretty clear that how you TRAIN and how you behave during TRAINING and your attitude towards TRAINING was more important from a leadership point of view. I completely agree with him on that, train hard enough and the results WILL follow, and Trengove appears to have the chops when it comes to putting in the work. I'm happy to trust the FD on their call to make him a co-captain.

Jones definitely seems to be our most consistently good player, and he works hard and is respected. That doesn't make you a great captain though. Let the young guys get their leadership reps in, cause practice makes perfect.

To be honest I'd be happy with Jones playing his hard stuff without having to worry about being captain.

Came in here to post this exact sentiment. Sometimes you just have to let good players be good, without heaping extra responsibility on them. I have confidence in Grimes and Trengove.

Everything about Grimes screams leader: his actions on and off field, demeanor, courage, level head, maturity and just general attitude. Only knock I've heard might be that he is quiet - but that in itself isn't even necessarily a negative.

Trengove I think has just about all of the same traits mentioned above but currently they are at a less developed level in him. But people say he has more of a voice than Grimesy, so he gets a bump for that.

I'm happy as a pig in sh1t with the current arrangement and see absolutely no need to change it.

But I do agree that Jones seems to have missed the boat by 12 months and that had the captaincy been changing hands this preseason that he would've been the red hot favorite. Comparing him to Beamer is also unfair; even at his peak Beamer was always scowling and puffing his chest out, pointing fingers and never ran hard defensively. Appeared arrogant and did not appear to ever take a genuine interest in any of the new recruits (and yes, I'm aware the boxing camp was his thing).

Go back every year from about 2005 onwards and we'll have a similar thread about the previous year's B+F winner.

Hell, I think we toyed with the idea of Davey getting it at one stage there. That would have been fun.

Leave it with Grimes, he'll be there for 10 years and he'll do fine. Jury is out on Trenners.

Jones is an on-field leader anyway , more by deeds than words from what i have seen(not much TBH) . Whether he is captain or not does not matter to me(think he would be a great choise anyway) ,am only interested in what he does on the field. As others have said ,it was a tough year to be anything associated with the MFC ,not surprised that it took its toll on Trengrove , and i will watch both our captains this year as i believe they both will "be better for the run" etc.

Jones is carrying the burden of being our #1 midfielder. He'll be tagged to all buggery next year. Captaincy is the last thing he needs. Put him in the leadership group but that's all.
